From Tea Ave

Our Rose Oolong is a flower tea prepared using the ancient method, in which the tea absorbs the flower fragrance during the baking progress, producing a scented tea that’s aromatic and flavorful without using any additives or chemicals.

We blend our Alishan Jin Xuan Oolong with fresh Taiwanese roses to create an elegant flower tea that is both full-bodied and mellow. Rose Oolong has a floral fragrance and a rich, sweet taste. Smooth and exhilarating. Dare we say a little bit like falling in love.

I had this tonight with hubby. My bad – I oversteeped the first pot, mainly because I accidentally overleafed and therefore should have cut the time. Subsequent steeps were much more in line with my drinking preferences.

First, the tea is beautiful. The rose petals are the most gorgeous shade of deep rose pink. This would be a lovely “me time” tea or date tea. The appearance of the tea is an important part of the presentation when you are drinking gong fu style!

Once I had my steep times right, this was really lovely. The rose is very, very light. If someone else had prepared the tea and I didn’t know what it was, I don’t know if I would have detected rose. Instead, I felt that the rose petals added a nice sweetness to the tea, and it reminded me a little of candy rather than sugar or honey. We made at least five steeps and possibly six and the leaves really were not fully played out.

In getting my order ready, I have decided I will probably cave and buy one of the teapots. Have you seen them? They look almost identical to the Curve ForLife teapots and are so reasonably priced that even hubby said, “Why not get two?” when I asked him which color to get. He likes Storm, a light grey, and I love their signature blue color.

I will review the pot if I do get one, but I wanted to point out to anyone considering them some advantages of this pot. It has the silicone gasket that helps seal in the aroma and flavor and helps keep the lid from tumbling off when you pour the very last of the tea. The infuser has a nice handle and lip so you don’t burn yourself as easily when you remove it. The infuser has a flat bottom, so it will sit upright on the counter or a plate if you need to set it down while filling it or when you remove it from the pot.
These facts are not true, alas, of the Beehouse teapots i bought several of years ago when I started drinking tea. The round bottom of the Beehouse baskets is inconvenient and the lids pop off sometimes when you are pouring. There is no lip or handle to the infuser so you burn yourself pretty much every time you make tea. Daughter is smart and uses a spoon to lift the basket out but I am too impatient to stop and get a spoon!

I think that Sky pot is going to be mine soon!

Thanks again for the great tea package, Tea Ave! I tried half of my sample of this the other day but it didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to and I had other things on my mind/ too distracted to write a review… a shame! The amount of info on the small package for this tea is amazing. This oolong is a jade green with little bits of bright magenta roses. The bright yellow brew has a somewhat savory, buttery flavor, very silky and not at all ruined with just boiled water. I can’t say it tastes or has too much of a rose fragrance except for hints when it has cooled a bit, but that is only with the first cup. The second steep is very similar. The third is also very flavorful, getting a little sweeter while still maintaining that slightly savory aspect. I’m surprised a more floral oolong wasn’t used as the base for a rose oolong. I think there would be a ton more life left in these leaves if I kept steeping. With the last steep session, I don’t think the water was hot enough. This steep session was much better – never bitter or astringent, just consistently buttery! The only complaint I have with this oolong is that it isn’t rosey enough. Oolong always brightens my day a little bit!

Finally trying this tea because it’s Monday and I deserve it.
First steep, 205F/1 minute: YUM! This is the most true rose flavor that I have had the chance to try. The sweetness of the oolong makes this taste like candied rose petals without the bitterness! Soo tasty! On the beginning of the sip, I’m still getting that bit of custard/papaya that I got from the Magnolia Oolong, perhaps it is the butteriness of the oolong blending with the flowers from both that is creating that flavor. Still excellent.
Second steep, 205F/1:30: A little greener taste, like the smell of rose stems, has creeped in. This tea is still so sweet and flavorful that I feel like I put too much sweetener in, but I haven’t sweetened it at all! The rose + sweet really lingers on your tongue. Minerality is creeping in as it cools.
Third steep, 205F/2 minutes; the rose scent has taken on a slight bitter quality, like rose oil. The base is coming through much more in this steep, and I can taste the sweet vegetal minerality of the fully unfurled oolong, a French green bean/ broccoli stem type of flavor. Still delicious.
I got one more steep out of this at 2:30, the vegetal notes upped in power, but it was till sweet and smelled of roses. Cold steeping this tonight.

I choose to start the Tea Ave samples with the Rose Oolong, it was the best choice on earth for sampling something for me who loves rose so much! 1rst very good point, indications are super accurate: oxidation, type of Oolong used everything is mentionned on the package. I have rarely seen such accurate indications.

It is therefore an Alishan picked at 1200 meters and little oxidized scented with taiwanese roses I am about to drink.

This rolled leaf smells divinely good , a real bouquet of roses. Tea Ave. requires an infusion at 100 ° c, so do I.

3 minutes later, I have a beautiful yellow-green liquor, very pale, typical of Alishan and a sweet smell of roses.

From the first infusion leaves unfold very well. What beautiful leaves … and with rose petals, I am in love.

Then…the taste… because it is not because Tea Ave sent me some samples that I am particularly kind with the teas. But then … I can only be a little seduced beforehand … Oolong + rose … this tea begins with a big advantage … and … it is good. Yes, it’s a good Alishan, refreshing, with a body between light and medium.

The scent of rose is present but just right for my taste, it does not hide the Oolong. I adored my first steep, the second infusion is nice but is less interesting for me as it has less body.

For my first sample with this Tea house, I am delighted.

This is however a beautiful tea, pics available here : https://thevangeliste.wordpress.com/2015/02/14/rose-oolong-tea-ave/

Thank you Tea Ave for the samples! The presentation was top notch. I very much enjoyed the aroma cup experience. It really does help concentrate and focus the aromas so you can fully appreciate the oolong! The rose was definitely not overpowering. This type of high mountain oolong can have some floral overtones anyway so the rose just seemed to fit right in. Very creamy buttery oolong, with a little hint of a vegetal taste. Quite complex and tasty. Really looking forward to trying the other 2 oolong samples I was given, the Jasmine and Magnolia.

Tea Ave isn’t yet open at the time of this writing- these are some samples I was sent, and I will definitely be ordering this as soon as I can.

The brewing process was interesting- I usually brew oolongs a little lower than 100 C/212 F, but the packet said to try it at boiling, so I did. Recommended brew time for 250 ml was a minute, but I ended up letting it go for a little longer, about three minutes. Maybe closer to three and a half.

Anyways, onto the tea- the important bit. This was a very bright, tasty oolong. One of the dangers of floral teas is losing the tea to the flowers, but I found that the rose played very nicely with this oolong. There was lots of vegetal and floral goodness, without anything overpowering or cloying. The scent was very much the oolong, as was the initial taste- the rose kind of creeps up on you, finishing the sip with a nice burst of flowery sweetness.

The second infusion, which was a five-minute infusion, brought out more of the subtle vegetal flavors in the oolong. Less grass, more herbal/woody. All in all very nice and drinkable- the oolong base is great and the roses are a nice complement!

On a side note: the packaging for this tea is some of the best I’ve ever seen. It’s super informative! In addition to a description of the tea, it tells you the altitude, roasting level, oxidation level, base tea, origin, and gives you brewing instructions for a gaiwan, a tea bag, a teapot, and cold brew… and the sizes for the brewing implements! And somehow it manages to do this without seeming too crowded. A+ visual appeal.
