From Taiwan Tea Crafts

For many of our customers, there seems to be one tea that spells springtime; and it’s this one! This is the tea that generates the most messages inquiring about its pending availability. Well, your patience will be well rewarded with this 2020 offering! Once again, the craftsmanship of Mr. Ong has produced a generous tea that is exuberant and joyous, with a touch of sophistication. Just like sipping a bouquet of flowers! The aroma of buttered green beans with distinctive floral overtones is definitely there. Nothing aggresses the senses. The liqueur is smooth, refreshing, and very pleasant. As usual, we reserve the tea made from the highest section of his garden (see picture) and, as it is now customary with his teas, Yuwen, our Tea Maker, has put her signature on this Lot 930 by very lightly baking the tea when receiving it. You see, between the time we selected the tea on the day it was made and the moment we receive it, the tea was sent to sorting to remove the stems and imperfect leaves. This takes a few weeks where the tea may not be stored properly and humidity may be absorbed by the leaves resulting in a dull tasting tea. Light-baking will re-kindle the delicate flavours and aroma of this tea and help seal-in its freshness by drying the leaves. This also adds a very pleasant almond-like finish and taste. This way, the tea will keep its crisp refreshing charm longer and keep better when stored in your cupboard. This is our way of honouring Mr. Ong’s craftsmanship and enhancing your enjoyment of his fine tea! Don’t delay getting some: our signature Wenshan Bao Zhong has garnered a strong following through the years and we always run out fairly quickly!

First oolong of the spring 2020 harvest. Grandpa steeped just over a gram in my knock off the wall style mug from AliExpress. I love me some AliExpress for cheap teaware. Shipping takes forever sometimes but I don’t mind waiting given the deals that can be found.

This one has more aroma than flavor. The scent of the dry leaves is a perfumy bouquet of honeyed flowers. Notes of gardenia, lilac, and violets. Brewed tea is rich and buttery with a vegetal sweet pea flavor. Lilac dances across the tongue in the after taste. Towards the end of the session, it turns somewhat flat.

Good baozhong though nothing earth shattering. Going to brew with lower temperature next time to see if I can extract more subtleties from it.
