From Taiwan Tea Crafts

This Lot 575 is from the winter production of the same producer and garden that gave us Lot 531 and the previous Lot 509 that simply vanished in a matter of weeks, this spring. Not only was this a good indicator of how good the spring gaoshanchas (high mountain teas) were in 2016, but also of the quality that this producer makes as this winter Lot clearly reveals. They all come from a new producer we’ve been following for a few years which makes an expressive, yet balanced tea. This is now our second season of partnership with him and I think we now confirm that we’re looking forward to a long term collaboration with him. Our guideline is always to find growers/producers that are worthy representatives of the defining character of the terroir they are from as well as having a harmonious relationship with the land and traditions of their craft. It is clearly the case here as the cup will reveal heady floral notes that hint towards Orchids; a thick satisfying body with a rapturous layered flavour palette and a smooth finish. The balsam notes are there, the sweet pastoral aroma of alpine wild summer flowers and sun dried grain will charm all of your senses. This is a good Alishan that highlights the easy-drinking character of this terroir’s teas. This is a very good introductory tea to high-mountain oolongs.

Backlog.

This is smooth, buttery tea with a nice balance of vegetation and flowers and a rock sugar finish. All good stuff, but nothing that really sets it apart from other Taiwanese oolongs. It has more or less a standard gao shan taste and aroma. The first couple of steeps are light, and then the tea develops more viscosity and body. However it doesn’t hold up to multiple infusions as there is a noticeable drop in flavor after the 3rd steep. This particular harvest seemed a bit weaker in aromatics and flavor than past Ali Shans.

While I enjoyed it, I consider this squarely a middle of the pack green oolong. It had its moments but didn’t blow me away.
