From Taiwan Tea Crafts

Excitement always prevails when it’s time to visit this magnificent garden during our spring-time rounds as it has become our benchmark garden to rate the quality of a season. The craftsmanship and care both in the garden and in the factory from the people behind this tea are exemplary and well-recognized amongst local tea makers. Therefore, if the tea fluctuates between good and superb relies on the uncontrollable nature-born factors like the prevailing weather since last winter. Again, this Spring 2023, the weather and precipitations in the mountains of Shibi were not as dismal as in the lower plains. Despite lower yields, this spring’s offering is a cut above past iterations. Also, just as previous lots, this Lot 1226 is a custom production made just for us with a slightly higher oxidation which we can designate as a traditional oxidation level. This results in a thicker, more buttery texture with sweeter floral notes and a less grassy attack. Fans of this tea will still be in recognizable territory but will benefit from a fuller mouth-feel, yet smooth and sophisticated and very well balanced between the floral notes, the crisp pastoral ones and the clean mellow finish. As with all previous lots from this garden, the adjective “clean” also comes from the fact that this garden is certified to meet the EU norm for low pesticide use: one of the most stringent norm of the kind right now. Another good reason to indulge! This Lot 1226 peaks with succulent notes of spring flowers and smooth vegetal nuances that culminate with a silky smooth finish. This spring’s is thick and generous in well-balanced organoleptic material that are sure to give many satisfying infusions of joy in the cup. This is our “go to” tea when we are wanting to enjoy a good high-mountain tea.

Lot 1319, Spring 2024

Excited to have made tea for somebody for the first time in our new house! The friend who I shared the gaiwan with said this was really light and sweet. My boyfriend who doesn’t drink tea and prefers strongly flavored fruity beverages said it was subtle and very sweet, different from the other teas he’s been taking sips of recently but “It’s still tea.” Another friend who is also not a tea drinker, I think I heard him say, “That really sweet.”

Silky soft buttery spring water in the mouth. It’s a bold tea in terms of immediate impact of sugarcane sweetness which is layered heavily throughout the sparkling “green” balsam/fir taste that’s not at all vegetal or grassy. The florality is complex; it permeates through multiple layers of taste. It feels heavy, warm, and fleshy rather than piercing and perfumey, a nice balance to the green quality. Aftertaste is a mingling of banana (which I also smell in the wet leaf) and peach, both thick and ripe. Strong sugarcane returning sweetness from far back of tongue. Later, there’s a pleasant tartness on the back sides of the tongue akin to lemon. Pushing the leaf to the very end gives a rare thick and oily brew and absolutely no sign of bitterness or astringency.

The experience almost reminds me of butter mints.

Overall, the tea is very warming in the body in comparison to the taste. It really had me sweating during the peak heat of the evening.

5g in a 150mL glass gaiwan was plenty of leaf for a 4-brew session that has continued the following morning. Enough caffeine to keep my perked up for only 1 but not 2 full games of Star Munchkin after dinner.

I think this was a good pick for sharing but maybe better for a quiet sitdown than an evening filled with card games and video games.

Western steeping really brings out the thick and buttery/butterscotch quality ahead of the fir greenness.

A sesame seed stowed away in the last bit of leaf. Surprising find for tea from Taiwan. Usually Chinese tea contains little treasures.

Another impressive oolong from TTC. Love their packaging too. If you buy 250 g, for instance, they send it in 5 50 g packs to keep the tea as fresh as possible. This is the third of three samples I got from them and my favorite of the bunch.

Medium finish. No astringency or bitterness. Mild-medium sweetness. A bit acidic in smell and flavor. Longevity is 8-10 infusions. Super clean flavor.

I’ve determined that Taiwanese oolongs are the most consistently clean, balanced, drinkable teas for the price. Doesn’t seem I’m alone in this realization either. Hope they keep putting out amazing oolongs for many years to come :).
