From Stash Tea

Our interpretation of this classic Indian drink blends rich, flavorful Indian black teas with cinnamon, clove, ginger and cardamom. The brewed tea is very aromatic, with a flavor that is slightly sweet, strong, and penetrating, with lingering notes of almond. This tea is excellent plain or with milk (regular or evaporated) and sweetener. It is exceptional any time of day-as a rich morning cup, an enjoyable dessert tea, or as a special treat.

Some of the finest black tea in the world comes from India, the world’s leading producer of tea. Included in these teas are the robust Assams, muscatel Darjeelings and well-balanced Nilgiris. However, most tea consumed in India is not enjoyed for its subtle flavor nuances, but instead is blended with sweet and pungent spices to make chai.

Chai is usually brewed very strong, often concentrated, with lots of sugar and milk. Traditional Indian chai combines rich black tea that is boiled in milk with local spices such as cinnamon, clove, cardamom, and occasionally black peppercorns, ginger, and red chilies. The drink is then sweetened with sugar.

This tea for me gets a B+. Typically this tea is something I turn to in the middle of the day or early in the morning for a bit of a jolt and spice. The tea has a spicy sent to it without being overwhelming, and it goes down smooth. You can pair this tea with honey, but it’s honestly not necessary. It goes best with a light snack in the middle of your day.

This is my first time using this brand. The aromatic notes were nice: the cinnamon and all spice were immediately noticeable when removed from the bag and were slightly enhanced when steeped. First sip was decent: smooth taste without any after tastes or film on the tongue. As time continued, the tea flavor was still very mild and did not pack as strong of a punch as the initial taste. It reminded me of water slightly flavored. I do like my teas very strong so perhaps it is just me. It had no bitterness even though I steep longer than the recommended steep time.

The scent before you steep is nice, if not a little overbearing. The spices really stand out, and I enjoy that a lot, but I could see how it would bother someone. Once brewed, though, the tea becomes a bit more subdued and devolves into a slightly weak general spice smell. It actually reminds me a bit of scented pinecones at craft stores.

My impression of the taste is that it’s a bit weak, but the aftertaste is nice and smooth. I didn’t use any sugar. Before being swallowed, I found that it’s a bit bitter (though weak; this could also have been how I brewed it…). After swallowing, though, the spice comes through in subtle notes. It’s not /bad/ but it’s not /good/. I actually quite like the aftertaste, but I am not impressed by the drink itself.

Is this the best chai I’ve ever had? Not really. Is it the worst? Again, not really. It’s not something I will purchase in the future, but it’s not awful. Now, when some of the cup was gone, I did add some Silk brand soy milk (“Very Vanilla” flavor), just a splash. This made it slightly more enjoyable, so I think I’ll do that for the rest of the filterbags.

Overall impression: Nice aftertaste, weak spice flavor, and a little bitter.

I tried a few sips of this clear, and it seemed quite spiced — I think I might have to have a proper steep of it this way sometime and see what I think. However, my main objective was chai with milk and sugar today, and so that’s what I’ve made.
The spice is pleasant and comforting, though I wish there was a stronger flavour overall. I’m not sure what exactly, but it feels like it could do with one thing more to just make the flavour pop and really be delectable. But as is, it’s good, spiced, relaxing.

Holy crap. So, I’ve always felt like the tea bag version of this was decent, so I impulse-bought a bag of the loose-leaf kind a while ago, and didn’t actually open it until now. Smelling the open bag is kind of like being punched in the face with spice, and not in a good way. There’s definitely clove oil, but my little bottle of clove essential oil smells mild by comparison, so I’m guessing the rest of the face-punching is cardamom oil and “natural flavour of cinnamon”. I brewed 1tsp in 8oz of water for 4min and immediately added some sugar and milk, but it was still overpoweringly spicy and I could barely taste the black tea. I initially tried a 3min 2nd steep, but that just created slightly spicy hot water. Now the leaves are back in the hot water and they’re over in the corner of my kitchen having a time out and thinking about what they’ve done. I can’t win with this tea. I’m considering blending a little with a sturdy black tea to see if that balances it out, maybe simmer the whole thing in milk on the stove and add plenty of sugar. If all else fails, I think I could put a little in my essential oil diffuser and use it as a home fragrance. WTF Stash, I think of you as one of the better grocery store brands, how is this so bad?

Well, it smells a lot better than it tastes. if I drink it slowly it’s quite bitter. A full mouthful has more spice flavor, but still not exactly delicious. Maybe it’s better with milk? Drinkable, but not something I’d buy again.

Have had an iced chai craving lately. This isn’t iced, but it is chai. Hopefully I don’t regret this as I’m increasingly sensitive to caffeine… but chai is so tasty.

New to tea, this is a favorite though. One of the best supermarket teas, easily available for around $4/box of bags. Would like to try the loose leaf, presumably more flavor. Prefer this to Tazo chai.
With milk and a little honey, makes a nice pseudo-latte. I usually have some of this around.

Decent bagged chai tea, not overly spiced but not underwhelming. Another one that I snagged from work; I think I’d enjoy it more with milk!

This chai has a nice bold, spicy flavor that is very good with a touch of honey and milk. I would probably buy this again.
