From Stash Tea

Cranberries aren’t just for Thanksgiving. As you brew up this tea, the delightful cranberry and pomegranate aromas dance in your cup. We blended these flavors on a rooibos base to keep the tea caffeine-free and added some hibiscus, for a slight tart finish. From brewing to sipping, this cranberry pomegranate tea will make your spirits bright and ready for the colorful autumn season.

What is rooibos? Rooibos (say it like ROY-boss), or red tea is an indigenous herb of South Africa that is made from the fine needle-like leaves of the Aspalathus linearis plant. When the leaves are cut, bruised, and oxidized, they become a reddish-brown color, explaining why it was named rooibos or “red bush”. The outcome of the process leaves us with a smooth, gentle, earthy flavor that pairs easily with a variety of ingredients. This makes it an ideal base for many caffeine-free tisanes.

Ingredients
Hibiscus, rooibos, natural cranberry flavor, natural pomegranate flavor

This tea tastes like… Olives.

Ewwwwww. I hate olives to begin with- why is my fruity tea tasting like them? I blame the rooibos. And the hibiscus.

Once the olive taste wears off, I’m left with a slightly cranberry-like aftertaste. No pomegranate to speak of. It’s like a shadow of what this tea might have tasted like if it were blended better.

Ughhh. This is exactly why I despise both rooibos and fruity herbals.

First of all, I am not a huge fan of rooibos tea, and with the flavor combination of pomegranate and cranberry, I should have know that this tea was going to be too tart (and icky) for my liking. I’m not sure what I was thinking when I bought this one. Thankfully, my brother seems to be enjoying the remainder of the box, but even he adds a touch of honey to “edit” the taste.

First off, I have no idea how long I steeped this, but the mug was still pretty hot when I remembered I was drinking this tea so it can’t have been for too too long. At least it’s an herbal, right? I also added more than a bit of sugar to both counteract the dreaded hibiscus and also to hopefully mask the rooibos taste that I really don’t like very much except for very specific instances. I’m currently hugging the tea mug because it feels very nice and warm on my hands and the building is cooler than normal here at work. I broke my purse today, the handle ripped out, so I’m hoping this tea is better than I’m anticipating, to make up for my cruddy day.

Drinking this, it isn’t horrible. There’s still a yucky rooibos undertone that I don’t like at all, but the fruit flavours are pretty strong with the sugar added and tart and fruity like they are supposed to be. I can definitely taste the cranberry and there’s some pomegranate in there too. I don’t think I’d like this tea at all without the sweetener.

This one has a certain zing of tartness, but overall I liked it. I wouldn’t go to it first but when I want something with that tart flavor, I’d take it.

Well, judging from the ratings I think that I am the only person that enjoys this tea… It’s funny how everyone’s pallets are so different from each other. I do agree though it is an odd one, it does have a teeny bit of an olive taste, and a weird scent. However, it’s confusingly nostalgic in a way that I would drink it iced and cold brewed when available in the fall. I think my taste buds are broken. I’m not recommending it though because you have to be pretty strange like me to enjoy it.

Hmmm, no.

Not a fan of this one, it mostly just tastes like hibiscus tartness. There’s an odd musty note at the end of the sip as well… I don’t generally like red fruits or berries with rooibos, because I find it brings out the medicinal quality and ends up tasting like some version of cough syrup. It’s not quite that bad here, but it definitely has a touch of that medicinal taste.

Into the rehoming box it goes!

#tiffanys2021sipdown Tea #110 overall / Tea #26 for March / #drinkwhatyouown February 22/25
Mon 3/22/21 — Stash Cranberry Pomegranate. 2 teabags. Sometimes you need something easy going when you are at work.. (and this comes from someone that keeps a metal strainer, few tins of tea, etc. in their locker + carries a large bag full of teas, paper filters, etc. to work) I enjoy Stash tea but this has a fine non-descript fruity taste.

This is tea 12/50 I bought in a Stash Assortment. Neither the cranberry nor pomegranate shine in this. Overwhelmingly wine taste. Maybe better with honey.

Per directions, steeped 2 bags for 3 minutes, poured over ice. Tasted watery and bitter – it made me grimace when I drank it. Mixed with the iced tea with Raspberry Hibiscus, Melon, Raspberry Pomegranate. Mixture made it more drinkable but still not something I would choose to drink – still forcing it down to not waste it. Tasted 08. 2018.

Teabox… Thursday? Extra teabox tea this week, because I’m feeling in a hibi mood tonight and saw this single teabag I snagged from the Discovery Teabox. Thank you Skysamurai for organizing and all participants of the box!

So this is a hibi/rooibos blend with pomegranate and cranberry flavoring. Stash is one of those bagged tea companies that is pretty hit-or-miss for me… I love their hibiscus tea Apple Cinnamon Chamomile, but hated their Pomegranate Raspberry Green Tea, so I imagine this could go either way for me. Perhaps the hibi will save it for me, or perhaps their pomegranate flavoring will be entirely unappealing to me again… or, if the scent I’m getting through the bag is anything to judge by, it could be the rooibos that will be the problem. I normally have no issues with medicinal notes from red rooibos, but this tea actually smells like cough syrup through the paper bag. Hmm.

Well, let’s steep and see…

The tea does have a strong tart, fruity aroma, but it does still smell a bit medicinal just from the aroma to me. The flavor is… yaaaa, I am definitely picking out that cough syrup note. It’s not horrible, but it is there. I honestly don’t get it from rooibos often, but I’m getting it from this one. Maybe there is something about the tart, fruity cranberry flavor paired with the rooibos that is bringing out that particular medicinal flavor note and really making it have those “black cherry cough syrup” vibes. If it didn’t have that rooibos base, this might have actually worked for me, because I think the hibi and cranberry flavor pair okay, and I’m really not making out the pomegranate flavor much.

I’ll finish the cup, and try to convince myself it’ll keep me from getting a sore throat/cough. But it is another miss for Stash for me, unfortunately.
