From Simpson & Vail

Do you love cupcakes? We offer 3 delicious cupcake blends: Red Velvet Cupcake, Carrot Cake Cupcake and Strawberry Cupcake.

I love carrot cake, whether it’s in a loaf or in cupcake form. What I don’t like is that “some” people always feel the need to add raisins to what is already perfection. Don’t mess with success people! The dry leaf has a delicate aroma of carrot cake spices. The brewed cup is full flavored and fabulous with the smell of just baked carrot cake.

Ingredients: Organic green rooibos, papaya pieces (papayas and sugar), organic cinnamon chips, carrot cake cupcake flavoring and safflowers.

It really does smell like carrot cake. The flavour is a bit more mild, but I can taste some carrot cake.

With this tea, I mostly taste cinnamon and after that, vanilla. I only kind of taste carrot cake. It’s very good but it is missing something. It definitely makes me think of carrot cake, but I think if I was drinking this without knowing the flavor, I might not pick up on that.

September Sipdown Prompt – eat a second dessert day! Drink a dessert tea.

I didn’t eat a second dessert but I am having my first dessert and drinking this tea with it. That’s all the prompt really asked for, anyway!

My dessert is a huge caramel turtle candy that my son and his wife bought for me on their vacation from a chocolatier near (or in?) Charleston, SC. This tea, unsweetened and sans additions, is brilliant. I love it. Caffeine free, sugar free, delicious.

A couple of weeks ago I served this to the person who bought this tea for me and she said, “This tea is soooo good. What are we drinking?” When I told her, she said that she bought herself a tin when she bought mine and that her tea didn’t taste the same. My guess is that she was underleafing and maybe understeeping, too.

This calls for a teaspoon per six ounces of water and five minutes steep with boiling water. Sticking with that, I get a really delicious cup of tea that twins carrot cake so nicely.

This is almost a sipdown, but I doubt it will hit sipdown status because I plan to not only re-order this one but also to get the Birthday Cake flavor to have with my grandsons. One of my twin grands hosted a pretend tea party in the playroom for my daughter and myself yesterday, with multiple pours of (imaginary) tea and lots of milk added. (Don’t say cream! It is milk!) We also gnoshed on plastic cookies.

They have had one real tea party with their parents drinking Teeccino Mocha flavor which they have loved since before age 2, so I am really hoping they will grow up to be tea lovers! I am pretty sure they will love coffee.

2021 sipdown no. 123

Thanks to Cameron for another great tea!

Okay, okay, okay. This one definitely has a fresh-from-the-oven carrot cake scent. My mom makes the best carrot cake. It’s one of her famous dishes in our family, so I’ve been a bit spoiled with amazing carrot cake. All that to say that perhaps my expectations are too high for carrot cake teas.

Actually, this tea is pretty tasty. There’s a definite sweet cream cheese icing-like flavour that’s coming forward here while the tea is quite hot. There’s a cinnamon flavour mixed with subtle hints of carrot in the background as well. The cream cheese icing falls away as the tea cools. I’m quite happy with this tea overall and would definitely consider ordering it for our cupboard.

I need to reorder this one! Definitely a favorite from S&V.

Courtney

I was really happy with it too!

Cameron B.

Hmm I don’t remember being impressed with this one, I’ll have to try it again. :)

Courtney

It definitely became more cinnamon forward as it cooled (I noticed mention of cinnamon in your note). :)

Sipdown! (20 | 117)

Mastress Alita’s Sipdown Challenge (August) – “A cheap tea”

This isn’t the cheapest tea in my stash, but I just find Simpson & Vail’s teas to be ridiculously well-priced in general. Like somewhere in the $4-5 for 2 ounces range usually. And there are many of them that I personally really enjoy, and I would consider myself a somewhat picky tea drinker. I would love to see S&V get more recognition!

Anyway. This one is not my favorite of their green rooibos dessert tisanes, but it’s still very pleasant to sip on. Mild, with a soft and sweet cinnamon flavor and a touch of nutmeg. I’m not sure I get much in the way of frosting, which makes it more like a spiced muffin flavor profile IMO.

It’s nice and I enjoyed it while I had it, but probably not a reorder for me.

Flavors: Cake, Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Nutty, Spices, Sweet

I agree that S&V doesn’t get enough recognition!

ashmanra

What are your favorite green rooibos blends from S&V?

Cameron B.

Hmm I’m not sure, I remember really like their Winter Wonderland but it’s been a bit since I last had it. :P

ashmanra

Thanks! I think I will place an order for a friend’s bday. She is hard to buy for and drinks mostly caffeine free teas.

AJRimmer

I know my favorite green rooibos blends from them are snickerdoodle, blueberry cinnamon crumble, and this one.

Cameron B.

There’s also a birthday cake green rooibos that I’ve never tried, but will definitely have to order next time!

ashmanra

Thank you, CameronB and AJ Rimmer! I looked at their site and when I click herbals, none of these pop up. Same with decaf. I had to search for them individually. Maybe it is because I have an ancient iPad, but without your suggestions I would never have found these.

AJRimmer

I just checked, and it looks like they’re redoing their website, so I can’t find those blends by checking the proper category either. Hopefully they’re planning to keep them around!

AJRimmer

Aha! You have to go under Collections, and then Dessert Teas. Not the best organization structure I’ve ever seen.

Cameron B.

Yeah it’s a bit odd, I found most of them under the Dessert collection. Except for Winter Wonderland, which is under Holiday, and Birthday Cake, which is nowhere to be found ha ha.

Kiki:

“I smell a little vanilla. Marshmallows. lots of smelling Pie, some kind of pie. Flan. Is this another banana cream pie? sips I dunno smells like, fragrant, like perfume. Is it fruity? Is it custard, like a custard thing, like vanilla? Rice pudding. heh I got no clue. What is it? Is it rice pudding? Is it custard? Is it vanilla? Cinnamon, has it got cinnamon in there? Ginger, say ginger! Gingerbread! Is that what it is — gingerbread? Ginger? Ginger? Has it got star anise in it? Is that it? Star anise? Haha.”

Carrot Cape Cupcake.

“Carrot cake cupcake? So it does have some cinnamon and some ginger. Haha. Just like carrot cake, dammit. Yeah, just like it. Son of a bitch. muffled cackles Yeah, that it. That’s good, very nice. Very natural tasting. What did you think?”

I haven’t had any yet. I’ve been typing your constant questions.

“Ohhkeh. a series of belches and giggles It’s a good digestive tea. I’d rate it an 8. I think it’s very good.”

derk:

It totally smells strongly of carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Simpson and Vail nailed the aroma! The taste is smooth and less pronounced but the aftertaste retains some of that cream cheese frosting and ?sweet cinnamon? If I hadn’t known what it was I would’ve guessed churros with frosting. I wouldn’t choose to buy this since dessert teas aren’t my thing but color me impressed. Thanks, Cameron!

Ginger? Ginger! Ginger?! I was dying.

Mastress Alita

She needs to move onto police interrogations next.

My brother in homeoffice looked at me what I am laughing at. He didn’t get it.
But I had a good laugh. Thanks Kiki and derk!

Leafhopper

Kiki gave me a much-needed laugh this morning. :)

ashmanra

I love a good Kiki note! Thanks for the giggles!

Tiffany :)

This sounds like perhaps what I was hoping for the DT’s Carrot Cupcake. I love the real dessert carrot cake, have not found this translated in tea form yet.

derk

Mastress Alita: she got a kick out of that. Her favorite entertainment genres are crime/cop/action.

Mastress Alita

derk: Lately crime dramas have been my evening escape, as well!

Her rapid-fire guesses make me think of playing charades, ha ha!

Hot, you can mostly just taste the spices. Once it cools a bit, you can really taste the carrot, and the spices somehow disappear so it tastes more like fresh carrots. This is an interesting one.

(sample came from the 2nd herbal traveling tea box)

I like the coconut one better. This one has a fairly nondescript creamy taste, but I’m not getting carrot cake. It’s not bad by any means and if I was placing an order, I might throw a bit in my basket to reach the free ship minimum, but it’s definitely not a must-have in my opinion. Also, I greatly prefer the Della Terra version, even though it’s seasonal and/or discontinued. Either way, nice and creamy, a vague bready flavor, I added sweetener, so it’s sweet, but other than that I’m not getting carrot cake.

I’ve had this one a while, haven’t tried it yet. It was in a thin baggie next to a cantaloupe tea, so I think the flavor got a little contaminated. Either way, I’m not sure how this is carrot cake. Green rooibos? Papaya? This is not carrot cake. I don’t think all of the ingredients were listed in the description either… there seems to be many other things there. The flavor is spicy at first from the cinnamon, but otherwise it is mild flavored and a little fruity (and I’m trying to ignore the cantaloupe, but there is still something else fruity there. Carrot isn’t a fruit. The description complains about carrot cake made with raisins, but I’m just glad carrot cake isn’t made with these ingredients. This tastes more like fruit cake! Ah well, the other two cupcake teas from S&V were much better.

OK admitting that I really neglected to pay attention to steeping parameters. This might have steeped for 15 minutes or more. OOOOoooops. I’m blaming the cat – somehow this must have been the cats fault.

Not sure that this is carrot cake, but it does have some of those spices. What I am getting though is the icing – cream cheese icing. Yep spice and icing – and I like it. All the other cheesecake teas, or cake teas – I never really get the “tang” of the cheese cake – this one really has it. Fun little tea, not sure I need to keep it in my cupboard, but was a nice experience.
