From Simpson & Vail

Heavenly! That’s the best word to describe this black tea blend. You’ll think you’re in a bakery when you open the bag and the aroma of nutty goodness wafts out. The brewed tea is divine – with no calories!

Ingredients: Black teas, almonds, almond sugar cookie flavoring and safflower blossoms.

Steeped this one a bit too long as well. Still yummy.

Strong flavoring again that assaults the nose even before you open the box it’s mailed in. It surprises me how much this tastes like an almond cookie. I’m missing the sugar bit (and that’s fine by me) however almond baked goods come out strong and clear.

Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa, hold on a second here.

Did they liquefy some cookies and make a tea blend out of it or what?! Why is this so good??

Thanks so much Kittenna for this sample…. Pretty sure it might be the best cookie/baked goods tea I’ve ever tried. I will probably have to buy some soon.

I made it to bring along in my Contigo travel mug for a 2.5 hour car ride, and those mugs keep the liquid ridiculously hot for a silly amount of time so I was patiently waiting to not melt the inside of my mouth…. I was so pleased when I could finally take a sip! It’s really good. I am impressed.

Curses. It’s both exciting and disappointing to find an awesome tea to add to your wish list :)
Especially not knowing the shipping cost situation for that company. But I will look into it soon enough! Now I’m pumped to try my other S&V samples from Kittenna. You guys might be creating a monster over here……

Sil

haha some of them smell WONDERFUL but don’t taste nearly as delicious. This is one of my favourites that we’ve tried so far. If we place another joint order i’ll try to remember to poke you and we can maybe send some your way.

ohfancythat

That would be awesome :) what a delicious tea! Man.

TastyBrew

This sounds good! I’ve never had any of their teas. This might make me try them.

jessiwrites

I’ve had their Strawberry Cupcake and said almost the exact same thing in my review – it tasted like someone liquefied a cupcake into my mug. Sadly, their shipping is $30 to Canada, which is insane. I emailed and asked about it and she said she could price it for my individual order, but I haven’t placed one yet.

ohfancythat

Aw man. Of course it is $30. :(

ohfancythat

Who can afford that! Jeez.

jessiwrites

I told her it was ridiculous and that while I really wanted to place an order with the company, I’d rather spend that money on teas from other companies who charge less for shipping. She said if I let her know what my order was, she could price out shipping for me, and explained that for the 6oz order I had in my cart would be more like $9 for shipping, but that the flat rate on the website is the $30.

ohfancythat

If they can actually admit that, why not offer a lower rate? That really sucks.

TastyBrew

@whatshesaid I think I’m going to place an order for small sizes of several of their teas. We can do what we did for culinary teas if you want.

jessiwrites

Well, the flat rate is for a different kind of shipping. I really have no idea why they don’t offer this other option on their site, though. I almost didn’t even bother, but after ordering from other companies with reasonable shipping, I thought I should tell her that she was losing my business with those rates.

TeaLady441

That’s crazy expensive. I thought Adagio was the only one with unreal prices. At least you took the initiative to contact them!

damn you steepster you ate my note!

I received this in a swap from Jude, I’m not positive this is actually from Simpson & Vail

The dry notes smell cookie like, but only lightly so.
As this steeped I had to sniff around trying to figure out where the baking cookie smell was coming from…. duh, my tea. Even my girls couldn’t believe how much it smelt like actual cookies baking. This is by far the most aromatic tea I’ve ever had.

It’s a little light on taste, only slightly cookie, maybe a bit stale. Could be my steeping I used a little less leaves than usual & kinda forgot about it.
I do believe I have more coming from someone else, so I’ll definitely have to experiment with this one, it’s got so much yummy potential.

ETA: re-tried this, more cookie flavour this time, however still getting the old/stale taste. Still a really great flavour though.

Jude

Hey there — have you tried it again with more leaves? Pretty confident it’s not stale since I bought it in mid-December … and unfortunately just found out that it’s a seasonal tea at Wegman’s so they only have it in for a couple of months and can’t order more :( BTW, the tea dept mgr told me this is a Rishi tea.

tattooed_tea

I always use lots of leaf, 3 perfect teaspoons full per mug.
Lol oops realize I said I used less leaves, I haven’t re-tries this yet

This is from Dexter3657’s way over the top box—a million thanks!

Finally reached where Buffy hits its stride and the evenings this week have been such a pleasure—spent last night laughing my tail off at the “Band Candy” episode (grunting aloof teenage boy Giles!!). Tonight, this accompanies me—my first S&V ever! It’s crazy smooth, like headscratchingly so, and smells rich and strong (the scent of the S&V blends Dex sent me reminds me of holiday coffee grounds like Fresh Market’s Panettone…heady, roasty, strong). I think I might’ve underleafed it slightly but it was still tasty, excellent for the drafty cold weather (it won’t make up its mind here…60F one day, 30F the next). Thank you! :D

Yay Buffy! I watched it all on Netflix this summer. Problem is when I get into a show, it is hard to get me to stop watching so I think I finished all the seasons in a matter of weeks…while in summer school.

ifjuly

I’m totally the same way, VariaTEA!

boychik

I was watching 24 with my hubby. We covered 8 seasons in less than 2 mos. Crazy… Hardly slept we only were able to watch after 11 because of kids

After feeling rather jilted from the French Vanilla Tea, I decided I deserved some dessert.
So, I opened this bag of tea and my tummy immediately growled.
Oh, dear, is this one of those teas that make me want to raid the cupboard or bake sweets (my hips do not need that!)
It certainly smells very cookie like, in fact I reached in and snitched a almond and munched happily away while the tea brewed.
Sniffing the tea while it is brewing is like smelling cookies baking in the oven…divine!
My mouth was watering and I was hopping back in forth in front of the timer.
I kept checking the ingredient list while I was waiting, the tea just smells like sugar coated cookies!
I wanted to make sure there really weren’t crumbled up cookies in there;)
Taste is a little calmer than the smell, you can taste the black tea and the almonds with a bake-y note at the end.
A very tasty and cozy tea.
Also, it is satisfying, I have no need to go find munchies or start baking.
I am plenty happy just sitting here and sipping.

SIPDOWN! This here sample is from Marcel Duchamp! Thanks, again!

This one smells so delicious! It’s bakey/buttery, almondy, sweet, and has just a tad of the black base present, especially when brewed. My nose is in heaven right now.

Taste: First thing I’m noticing right off the bat is how thick this one is on the tongue…it’s almost like I added cream. Very cool mouthfeel. I’m getting the black base in the front, with slight honey/butter notes mixed in (the cookie portion, I’m assuming) followed by a nice nutty almond taste. It isn’t as sweet as I was expecting, but it is yummy. I don’t know if I’d shout “Almond Cookie!” had this been a mystery tea, but I would say that it’s an almond flavored black with a slight bake-y aspect. The more this one cools down, the closer it seems to get to representing it’s name, but it doesn’t quite make it all the way.

Overall, I like this one quite a bit. Does it live up to it’s name? Not 100%, but it’s pretty darn close. I might buy it sometime.

NOTE TO FUTURE SELF: I’m enjoying this one a lot more at a “warm” temp than at a “hot” temp. It’s a lot more “cookie”-ish and the almond shines through a bit more.

Boiling 2 min, 30 sec
Rob Rauschenberg

That is a good observation. This is better warm, rather than hot. I’ve noticed that with a few of the flavored black teas. I used cream and sugar in mine and it was very yummy :-D

Emily M

I’ve noticed that with flavored blacks too. When hot, the black base seems to overpower the other flavors… I usually prefer flavored blacks once they’ve cooled a bit. This one was no exception.
That being said, I like this one! Thanks for sharing! =)
If I buy some I’ll have to add some cream and sugar and make a dessert out of it! haha

Another tea of the afternoon……

Oh, Amy oh. You were right! This is good. Vanilla and almond flavors all wrapped up on a good black tea base. (Have you noticed that a flavored tea for me is so dependent on the tea base?) This is also my first tea from Simpson & Vail. They have been on my ‘to try’ list for quite some time. I love to see tea companies that have been around for a while….it shows they are doing many things right to have that kind of longevity. This one goes on the ‘to purchase’ list.

Thank you for the sample, Amy oh!

Usual mug method.

TeaBrat

I’m glad you liked it, it’s a fave of mine for a dessert tea!

KeenTeaThyme

This sounds amazing! I’ll have to try it! :)

Oh yummy. Yummy nummy yummy good!

This tastes and smells just like a freshly baked cookie! Actually, a more accurate description of the flavor would be a almond sugar cookie or a piece of almond biscotti that has just been dunked in black tea. Scrumptious.

I’m loving this.

I am always on the hunt for the perfect almond tea, almond cookie, almond cake… you name it. I like almond. So when I was placing an order with Simpson & Vail, I had to try the two most promising almond teas that they had. Dry, this tea smells super cookie like and less almond like. Once brewed I get a really tasty smooth black tea base, but the almond is kind of in the background leaving me wanting more flavor. I steeped it for only three minutes, not wanting to over do it and turn it bitter, but I may have underdone it for this tea. I’ll have to play around with it a few more times before I give up on it. As it stands it is decent, but far from impressive and wowing.

I haven’t had a chance to scroll through your cupboard yet, but Pleine Lune by Mariage Frères, Le Thé d’Amandine by Comptoir des thés et des épices and Tribute by Theodor (which I have yet to try, but who everyone who is an almond fan seems to love) are three really good teas.

Dustin

Oooooooh, thanks for the recommendations! I have not heard of or tried them before, but they will be on my list of things to try!
