From RiverTea

With just a sip of this Ruby Red tea you are sure to fall under a spell of enchantment! A magic mix of rooibos, an herb grown exclusively in the scorching sun of South Africa, and red currants, a winter hardy plant native to Western Europe, will mesmerize your senses and will carry you into a wonderland. The soft, sweet flavor of rooibos is perfectly mixed with the tart, sour flavor of red juicy currants and apples, resulting in a sparkling, aromatic infusion. This naturally vitamin and antioxidant packed tea is a great everyday brew to protect against sickness and to keep your health in peak condition. Amaze your senses with this Ruby Red infusion that will wrap up your imagination into a fairytale atmosphere.

Ingredients: Rooibos Tea, Apple bits, Flavourings, Black currants, Red currants, Cornflower blossoms.

I haven’t been drinking much rooibos lately. Historically I like desserty rooibos more than fruity.
This is nice – if all rooibos was as good as this one, I’d drink more of it. It’s rooibos, but it’s more subtle in the background rather than that woody/medicinal in your face ick that it sometimes is (lower water temp shorter steep also helps). I’m not so sure about currant – what does currant taste like? – but it’s juicy and tart fruity against the woody sweet of the rooibos. This is a well blended tea – sad that they have gone out of business.

I should send you some Janet’s rooiboses soon.

GCTTB Rd 3:

You know you gotta be just a little bit tired when you search for a tea by the phrase “Ruby Red Christina” because that’s who put it in the box so obviously steepster must know which tea I mean. Anyways, thank you Christina for the opportunity to try this tea. It says it is an apple/currant rooibos but I am just getting currant, though it is a bit smoother/less medicinal than other currant teas I have had so maybe that is how the apple plays into it? Ultimately though, this tea isn’t something I would reach for given I am not a currant lover so it will continue to travel with the box. It was fun to try though :)

I had really high hopes for this tea when I ordered it. I saw the redcurrants in the ingredients list and hoped they would be tart and fruity like in my old favourite, Teaopia’s Spring Morning. I thought that the apple would just reinforce this, and it would be a big, fruity, juicy cuppa.

However, when I opened the package from RiverTea, the smell that met my nose was not a lovely juicy summery fruitiness, but instead woodsy and medicinal. It reminded me almost exactly of the blackcurrant lozenges I was using to get over my cold.

Subsequent smells of the dry leaf reveal a deeper apple smell, but the medicinal smell still exists. Tonight I summoned up my courage, and drank – and yup. It smells AND tastes like cough medicine.

It’s passable, but it really needs something else in there to overpower the medicinal flavours. Ah well.
