Earl Grey

This was a sachet. Broken pieces. Nice, strong citrusy aroma. Again, like the ‘supreme’, missing the luxuriousness and vanilla notes of my favorite earl greys. Citrus is overpowering.

This is by far the best Earl Grey I’ve found yet. Good lawd have mercy. It’s highly caffeinated as well…

I was given a sampler box of bagged teas by Rishi but branded for La Colombe, a coffee roaster. This was one of the teas. I followed the steeping guide on the bag packaging, though the temperature was approximate because my kettle isn’t that fancy.

The bergamot whacks you in the face as soon as the package opens, and it doesn’t diminish with the brewing. I added some milk as I usually do with strong black teas, and it toned down a bit. Still stronger than I’d prefer.

Good! Robust bergamot, not dirty or cedar tasting. A good supermarket tea. Tried in the tea bag form. I will buy again.

Earl Grey is by far one of my favorite teas and this Rishi tea was no exception. I decided to brew this for a lighter taste and I was blown away . This tea always helps me focus and relax in almost a meditative sense and I will always turn to it first.

One of the best Earl grey teas I’ve ever had. The bergamot is nice and strong and this may very well be my favorite tea of all now.

Courtesy of the travelling teabox, I steeped one of these fancy Earl Grey sachets in hot water for about 1 minute and then added milk. I then resteeped it and made a latte for my mother. This is a very strong bergamot-y Earl Grey. I liked it as a latte, but found it too brisk and a bit strong plain. These are traits most people look for in an Earl Grey, but I’m more of a smooth and malty EG fan.

So, I’ve finally moved on from Sri Lankan black and Chinese green teas for the time being. They just didn’t seem to suit the unseasonably hot, dry weather and increased workload I’ve been dealing with for the past week or so. Wanting something I tend to gravitate to in hot weather, I have been exploring the world of Earl Grey.

This Earl Grey is interesting. Rishi uses a base of Dian Hong for this blend, rather than a mixture of Chinese, Sri Lankan, and Indian black teas. The bergamot presence is pretty strong too, although not as strong as some of the more extravagant blends on the market. In the glass, the liquor is a dark amber. Aromas of caramel, toast, malt, honey, and bergamot are immediately noticeable. There also seems to be hints of lavender, cocoa, and ginger in the background. In the mouth, there is a pleasant balance of bergamot and caramel up front, with notes of malt, toast, and mild cocoa rounding things out pretty quickly. The subtle impressions of lavender and ginger that I caught on the nose are present on the palate too, though they remain rather faint. In terms of texture, this Earl Grey is similar to most others I have encountered. It is slight and relatively soapy in the mouth, though I do think it has a bit more body than some. Maybe it’s just me.

In the end, I quite like this particular Earl Grey and would recommend it to fans of the style. I highly doubt it will convert those who dislike these types of blended and flavored teas, but then again I could be wrong. As for me, I could see myself seeking this one out again in the not too distant future.

The first time I tried it it was like: ouch, that is a strong bergamot taste. I added some milk and it was better. It’s perfect for mornings like 6.am or so…but I would think before buying again.

Very good but VERY bold and bright. Lots of bergamot. Tasty, but not quite what I was looking for in a relaxing bedtime cup of tea. Quite the contrary…..this stuff will wake you up!
