From Red Leaf Tea

Few teas have as distinct of a flavor as Earl Grey with its amazing blend of black tea with oil from the bergamot orange. What makes this blend of Earl Grey Xtra Fancy is the whole loose leaf black tea used as the base which provides a light and aromatic flavor. This perfect balance is the ideal start to a tea that features the oil from bergamot orange for that classic Earl Grey taste in a Xtra Fancy blend.

As with traditional Earl Grey this tea blend can be used in cooking to add a unique taste to cookies and cakes. Plus the flavor of this tea is perfect for pairing with strong cheese and meat, for those looking for the right blend to go with their menu at a gathering.

I would describe this as earl grey xtra bergamot. Delicious! The smell of the dry and brewed tea is string sweet bergamot. The brewed tea is a smooth and slightly creamy black base with bergamot flavour. Not too sweet but not bitter or astringent. There is a slight metallic aftertaste but that may be the cup I am drinking from. I would not say this earl grey is anything fancy but it is great for anyone that loves bergamot.

What type of cup did you use?

Lala

I forgot my regular travel mug at home so I used my emergency one I keep at work. It has a stainless steel metal rim on it. I don’t normally notice a difference in taste when I use this cup, but this time I did. I have had this tea several times in different cups and I haven’t had that same metal taste I got when I drank from the emergency cup.

Maybe it is time to change your emergency cup :)

Lala

Ha ha. That would be the smart thing to do!

The “fancy” title for this tea was earned – according to the tea notes – for its whole leaf black tea base. Meaning, if an orange pekoe was used, it was likely an FOP as opposed to a BOP. The difference in flavor might not be noticeably detectable to some, but it might be noticeable in color. Whole leaf teas tend to have a lighter infusion.

The infusion on this was definitely lighter, but the flavor was exceptionally bitter and dry when paired with boiled water. Two traits I can’t deal with in a black tea. Once I lowered the temp to 190F, it yielded a more positive Earl experience. However, still not the best I’ve tried.
