Batch 301, the first batch made in 2003.

This cake has been stored in Menghai since 2003. We believe the teas made by Menghai Tea Factory prior to 2004 are some legendary stuff.

Simply put, it is the most tasteful, the most smooth ripe Pu-erh tea money can buy.

Rich and round, displaying cherry, strawberry, melon and sandalwood flavors. Dense and on the sinewy side, this stays balanced, with an excellent finish.

Pu-erh Tea Cake 357g
Vintage: 2003 fermented or ripe
Premium class
Loose tea leaves
Caffeine: Moderate
This cake tea came from a private reserve. You could not get it in local Yunnan market anymore!

This tea was quite good. It had what I would call a muted sweetness from the start, no fermentation flavor to speak of, and very little bitterness. It had a flavor profile that I am not sure how to identify. My thoughts were dried fruits but not something real sweet like a pineapple. A dried fruit with more fiber than sugar I suppose might be a way to describe the main flavor note. As I am drinking the last couple of steeps now they have gotten a bit cold as I was concentrating on photographing my tea session. I have now upped my game by having a good table top background and a second flash on a light stand with a soft box linked to my on camera flash. At least for one of my cameras.

Iin any case I steeped this tea eleven times in a 120ml teapot with 9.6g leaf and boiling water. I gave it a 10 second rinse. I steeped it for 5 sec, 5 sec, 7 sec, 10 sec, 15 sec, 20 sec, 25 sec, 30 sec, 45 sec, 1 min, and 1.5 minutes.

I’m striking out on teas today. I got a sample in my order from puerhshop.com, and I was hoping for something nicely aged. This had an unpleasant bitterness and no really pleasant flavors to speak of. There was some earthiness. Not overwhelming, but not very good either. I’m really sad because I’ve been trying to Shou all day and I’m not getting anywhere LOL.

Maybe I should brew something I know I like and make sure my taster isn’t off!!

Bummer! You should definitely try drinking something you know you like. I had special dark yesterday and year of the dragon today…been in a shu mood!

SarsyPie

It worked! I switched to fungus tea and it was quite good!

I was thinking about buying this with my last order but the cakes were expensive. If it only rates a 69 I’m glad I didn’t buy a cake.

Maybe try a sample, A. It could just be me, but I wasn’t getting much. I’d send ya some, but I only had enough for one session.

AllanK

Perhaps I will buy a sample when I put in another order, in a couple of months. I have 12 puerh from puerhshop to review now, not counting their free samples.
