Thank you again to Plum Deluxe for providing this tea for me to try and review!
The dry leaf of this tea smells quite interesting; not exactly vanilla even though I do get some creaminess. More than anything, I find myself smelling sweet bubble gum. There’s just a particular combination of ingredients that triggers that smell; compare this blend to DT’s Mulled Wine oolong as an example. There’s a lot of ingredient/flavour overlap, and that blend is infamous for smelling/tasting like bubblegum to people…
In terms of taste, the bubble gum I was smelling doesn’t carry through into the flavour. It’s still more fruity, with warming spice note undertones, than I’d have expected from a tea named “Vanilla Toddy” but there is a creamy undercurrent to the tea throughout so I don’t think it’s a misnomer to call this a Vanilla Toddy – I just wish the flavour was a bit more prominent. I do really like the balance of flavours here though; the red fruit note (cranberry/cherry/hibby) works well with a delicate ginger and cinnamon. Definitely an autumnal mulled wine/hot cider/toddy vibe, for sure.
I will definitely finish off this sample with ease – it’s very easy drinking. However, it also doesn’t stick out in my mind as an exemplary execution of the flavours, which is just to say there’s things I’d tweak. However, it’s a good tea!
