From Nothing But Tea

This unusual tea is named after the town where it originated. Pu Erhs are produced from large leafed Yunnan teas to which a little water is added before being buried for several weeks. During this time a bacterial fermentation takes place giving Pu Erh its strong earthy flavour and aroma, and its deep colour. However do not be put off, Pu Erh is reported to have extra health benefits and is widely drunk in China.

As I had suspected this is indeed quite similar to the pu-erh toucha I had the other day. Given a choice between the two, I’d get the toucha just for the convenience. It seemed like a good size in comparison to the size of my pot so the inability to adjust the ‘dosage’ isn’t something that would worry me.

Like the toucha, this one seems to be pretty much default pu-erh. The only difference here is that I haven’t steeped this one to the brink of death. The smaller leaf size in the toucha surprised me a bit.

But again, it’s a good tea. It’s just a pretty straight forward one. It tastes like pu-erh and it’s a good one to have for a plain every-day pu-erh that doesn’t cost a small fortune. That’s really all there is to say about it.

Is it wrong that the word “toucha” reminds me of “toucha toucha toucha touch me, I feel sexxxxy” from Rocky Horror?

Meg

ROFL! Now that’s all I see, too.

Angrboda

I’m sorry, that’s what it’s called O.o :p
Now you’re making me glad I don’t know the source material…

Shanti

No! Angrboda, you have to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show sometime…it’s this super campy, cult-classic movie musical about a newly engaged man and woman (Susan Sarandon!) that gets lost and trapped at a mansion owned by a Dr. Frankenstein-esque transsexual. It’s just so over the top and hilarious. :)

Meg

I remember dressing up for the midnight showings when I was in high school.

Angrboda

I can see I’m evidently frightfully uncultured… Such a philistine, me. :p

(Are you all going to throw wet teabags after me if I admit that it doesn’t immediately sound like something that I would like much?)

My first pu-erh, courtesy of a fantastic sampler sent to me by Angrboda!

…Okay, I totally see what everyone is talking about with the smell. There is definitely a delicate odor of cow barn here. (When people talked about “barnyard”, I was imagining something like the hay and leather scent of a riding stable, but no: this, my friends, is cows.) Weirdly, though, it tastes like it smells and it tastes good; I don’t know what to make of this! I am, so far, confused by pu-erh tea.

I did the first few steeps at near-boiling, under thirty seconds, and then had a few with cooler water and longer times. The tea didn’t get noticeably bitter, but the first few steeps were juicier, I think. The color was an utterly gorgeous red-gold!

So: I am intrigued enough to come back for more. We shall see!

I tried my first pu-erh the other day and I was quite suprised by its taste and I enjoyed it…

Angrboda

i’m glad you’re at least not scared away, even if you’re not sure how well you like it yet. :)

Cait

I like trying new things! …In small, carefully-controlled doses. ;)
