From Nothing But Tea

This is one of four teas we have sourced from Tumoi Teas in Kenya. Fairly traded teas from a Kenyan cooperative. Tumoi Teas is staffed, managed and owned by by small-scale Kenyan tea farmers in Nandi Hills Kenya. They make Black, Green, Oolong and Purple tea. They invest money back in the farmers and the young people of Nandi Hills. They are building a better community through (good!) tea.

They use natural process and their teas are grown without the use of pesticides.

Purple tea comes from a unique cultivar which instead of producing green leaves produces purple ones. The purple comes from anthocyanins. They are processed much like a Japanese green in order to preserve the antioxidants. The tea tastes like sweet plum and fresh spring greens.

The liquor has a very unusual purple green colour. If you add a drop or two of lemon juice (or a slice of lemon to your cup) it will turn pink!

Interesting, I had never tried a purple tea before and I have to say I am enjoying it. It reminds me a bit of oolong, but less vegetative and more fruity in flavour? subtle, yes, but nice. I can’t see myself reach for this often, as I usually enjoy bolder flavours, but I’m glad to have tried it!
