From Mandala Tea

An incredibly fantastic raw Pu-erh made from Pu-erh tree leaves that have a purplish tinge when picked. The resulting brick is darker. The quality of the leaves and the meticulous processing ensures excellent storage and aging potential. At the same time, it is one the best 2008 raw pu-erhs to drink. The infused liquor is golden and is almost completely without bitterness. CLARITY, CLARITY, CLARITY!

This tea brick is composed of entirely spring 2008 raw material from the exact same area as the 2005 production. This year Yunnan Sourcing is proud to be the exclusive producer and distributor of this very special tea! We have produced exactly 460 bricks in total!

Producer: Yunnan Sourcing
Vintage: Spring 2008
Production area: North-western area of Dehong county

This reminds me a bit of Autumn Song, with the base flavor, but instead of lemon notes there is wood (cedar in particular, I think), nuts, and a cozy warm feeling when drinking.
The base is smooth and mellow and there is no bitterness, dryness, or astringency here.
This would be a good daily drinker, as the taste is not overpowering, and it would be perfect on a chilly night.
The woody flavor was much stronger in the first steep, almost like a ripe pu er but with a bit more mellowness, but at the second steep it calmed down a bit and blended nicely to a balanced cup.

I did one 15 second rinse, then 45 seconds, then 1 minute.
This actually made me very sleepy! Some pu er (like Heart of the Old Tree) makes me jittery and very awake, but this is a very calm tea and I’m ready to hop off to bed, or I’d do more steeps.
I will have to play with this more over the weekend.

Over all pleasant, and I’d recommend it to those who want something they can drink every day.

Thank you Boychik for sending me some of this wonderful sheng. I must admit I have a difficult time rating these, since I’m not a connoisseur I don’t know exactly what I am looking for. ;)

I did some short steeps this morning in my yixing teapot. For a sheng of this age it doesn’t contain a whole lot of bitterness, but has a lot of pleasant flavors that I associate with a good sheng. It is woodsy, with a bit of smoke and some lemony citrus flavor. I also get a nice, nutty flavor from this and the tea is very aromatic, filling up my kitchen with a pleasing aroma. It does seem somewhat astringent, although not overwhelmingly so. Sometimes shengs are a little rough on my stomach which is why I don’t drink them more often, I think.

This is one reason why I favor shus ever so slightly, they make such a nice after dinner drink although it seems like I am more or less alone in that opinion. If I had some more aged shengs I might feel differently, of course…

This seems to have a good qi and is enlivening… tempted to get some =)

I agree that shu is nice later in the day. Sheng will keep me up all night!!

TeaBrat

yes! me too. I have a hard time knowing when to drink sheng since it isn’t a “morning” type of tea for me either. Seems best in the late morning/early afternoon…

i decided to enter this tea under Mandala as well as Yunnan Sourcing since Mandala currently carrying these bricks. They are sold out on US site but fortunately Mandala has them.

I love wild teas of Dehong. i tried Light Roast, regular roast, Feng Qing Ye Sheng Hong Cha Wild Tree Purple Black tea Yunnan Sourcing offerings. i tried 2005 Wild Tree brick of Dehong (humid storage) and i loved it.
This puerh has some notes not found in other sheng. its sweet, nutty, herbal, smooth and delicious. Not bitter. Soup is bright yellow . it was a pleasure to drink for 2 days.

Thank you Garret for having this tea . I have to have it, its a must in my cupboard!
