The Cookie Lady was nice enough to send me a sample of this tea with her Christmas package I got the other day! I saw a few reviews of it last month and I really wanted to try it. xD I love genmaicha, and I am always eager to try another one.
This one is pretty good. Very popcorn-y. Reminds me A LOT of DavidsTea’s Genmaicha, but minus the actual popcorn pieces.
Don’t think it’s as smooth as Davids’ version though, which is kinda sad. A pretty good genmaicha still though! Glad I got to try it! Thank you, The Cookie Lady!! :D :D

Free sample that I got from Lupicia the last time I was at the store. This is a mesh pyramid teabag.

So, it’s a genmaicha… I generally like genmaichas but I can’t say I adore them or crave them very often. This is sweeter than some other varieties I have tried. I am definitely enjoying the savory, nutty flavor of the toasted rice. The green tea is a bit seaweedy and vegetal but overall, fairly mild. This is good stuff! I do have almost a whole package of genmaicha from Maeda-en I need to finish off or pitch it in the New Year… so I won’t be buying any more soon!

Generally genmaicha is my favorite tea. I’m wondering if I over steeped this cup though. The marine like flavor is over bering. Every time I take a sip I imagine myself on a dock with lots of fishing boats. Seldovia, AK. There is still that good ole grassy flavor that keeps drawing me back for more sips.

As I sip more the true flavors come out more. I’m on my second steep now and it’s much better. Grassy ricey goodness with a slight seaweed flavor.

I needed a nice palate cleansing tea after that artificial disaster I just drank… My tongue still tastes like alcohol, blegh! This sample came from Dexter. The green tea leaves are small and a dark, rich green color, and there is a lot of rice (hooray!). Smells mildly ricey.

Mm, the steeped tea smells very strongly of toasty roasty rice! Yum, the flavor is extremely roasty as well. I can definitely taste more rice than tea, which is actually my preference in genmaicha. The tea itself tastes like dry autumn leaves with a slight seaweed-ish savory element. Yum, thank you genmaicha, for making my tongue happy again!

I got this as a sample with a recent purchase from Lupicia. The new fall teas are out in force, and it’s hard to resist the temptation to try all the barley and citrus teas!

This is a pretty good genmaicha with a nice toasted rice flavor. There are quite a lot of rice kernels mixed in with the green tea, which has a typical sencha aroma and taste. It does become slightly bitter after a longer steep, but overall it’s a very pleasantly light tea.

Cameron B.

All the barley teas! :D

Mikumofu

They need to tell us when they’re taking down the display so I can make another trip, lol!

I was considering ordering some online since they’re only $5.50 a piece. I want to try them all before they go away! :P

Mikumofu

Once you try the samples hopefully you’ll know whether you like them enough to order more! :)

Can’t wait! :D

Sipdown (136/143)!

Thank you VariaTEA for the sample! I did enjoy this one, but I really didn’t find much fancy or special about it other than the name – it was basically a pretty typical Genmaicha, although I thought it leaned just slightly more to than green side than the roasty toasty rice one.

Nonetheless, happy to have tried it – one more Lupicia blend sampled, and one more Genmaicha under my growing belt ;)

VariaTEA

Dexter sent this to me and I thought I would pass some along given your efforts to try all the matchas.

Roswell Strange

Well thank you to Dexter as well!

Thank you Dexter for sharing this with me. It is a good genmaicha – roasty with a little bit of butter and grass from the base. A very pleasant cup, though, there is nothing particularly outstanding that I would go out of my way to stock it. I am glad I got to try it out though so thank you once again :).

Dexter

Interesting – I like this one…. Can I ask what’s your favorite genmaicha? LOL If there is one out there that is significantly better than this I should be looking for it. ;))

VariaTEA

There is not one that I can think of that I like more that is not flavored but to me, most genmaichas are similar with just subtle differences. This one is very good but Lupicia isn’t exactly the most accessible so I don’t think it is unique enough to warrant placing an order just for this. I would maybe add it to an order if I was already making one though.

Dexter

OK fair enough. I just thought maybe you knew of a SPECTACULAR one that I didn’t know about…. :))

VariaTEA

No I don’t but if I find one, I will let you know. Honestly though, I tend to prefer the flavored genmaichas like Japon.

Cheri

Japon was the first flavored gemaicha I have had and it is delicious, but I also have a special place in my heart for plain genmaichas. I’m always looking for new ones to try.

Dexter

I LOVE Verdant’s Loashan Black Chocolate Genmaicha – that’s probably my favorite. Plain genmaicha, I too keep looking for one that’s the right balance of toasty roasty to green. I really like genmaicha, but I think in my heart I know that my favorite genmaicha is a hojicha. Or what I’m trying to say is that I think if I’m in the mood for that style – hojicha works better for me…

This is the first genmaicha I’ve tried, so I can’t really compare it to much else, but I really liked it. It’s very light and sweet and toasty.

This was my freebie tea from Lupicia today. It’s quite yummy, but of course I just adore genmaicha in general.
