This is a genmaicha that the rice was flavored and powdered with freeze dried berry powder. There are freeze dried and dehydrated strawberries in the mix with a splendid Japanese sencha.

I found a spoon and a half of this in my sample box and decided to split this into two sessions. This may have been a poor choice and I would have been better off with having a stronger solid cup during only one experience.

Tasty but ephemeral berry tartness supported by roasty toasty green.

I look forward to trying the remaining bit of leaf with far less water.

Thank you to whoever sent this my way.

Finally getting through my much-overlooked LP blends. This was one I was really eager to try, particularly since I enjoyed 52Teas Razzleberry Genmaicha many moons ago. This one has a similar vibe, although the berry flavours are more subtle and muted. It’s maybe worth nothing that this is a more traditional genmaicha, with toasted white rice and what looks like sencha, in a roughly 60:40 rice to tea ratio. It’s not like LP’s Laoshan Chocolate Genmaicha, which was entirely unique.

The initial flavour here is toasted rice, followed by a light juicy strawberry flavour. There’s a hint of raspberry towards the end of the sip, and the tart-sourness from that lingers well into the aftertaste. The strawberry sweetens and lightens the whole thing, and it’s a great combination. Mostly, I’m just glad that “berry” aspect is a big part of the flavour, more so when it’s as nicely balanced as it is here. Although the toastiness is prominent, it doesn’t overpower the fruit flavours, and the blend as a whole isn’t overdone, artificial, or particularly in-your-face. It’s just a natural sweet fruitiness, with toasty rice, and a hint of lightly vegetal green underlying it all. Pretty much a perfect genmaicha, then?

I really enjoyed this Berry Genmaicha. It was made at work so I just had the general hot water spigot, a coffee mug, and a loose leaf tea bag. There is a good fruity scent and there is a nice toasted rice/berry flavor to start with. It moves into more of a green tea aftertaste. It is a great after lunch tea.

I love flavored genmaichas and mostly when I say that I am thinking about a 52 Teas flavored genmaicha since they have the most variety to offer. However, now that I am sipping on this one, I think that could be generalized to all flavored genmaichas. This is definitely different than a 52 Tea’s blend as it highlights the base tea and the berry comes through more in the aftertaste. Also contrasted to the sweet and dessert-like 52 Tea’s blend, this is definitely truer to the fruit itself. Both good in different ways :)

Dustin

I’m a fan of flavored genmaichas too. I wish more companies would offer them.

VariaTEA

Agreed though luckily I am stocked on 52 Tea’s blends so I am not lacking in that department…thank goodness :)

Oh I am so sleepy today! I stayed up late playing MTG with Ben, mostly building and testing my new Mono Black Control deck. It needs work, but the supplies to build it were light on the ground so for what I had it works well. I want it to be themed around specters and horrors, with lots of annoying discard for my opponent, it will be a fun alternative to my zombie hoard, though I still need to make a blue black zombie deck. So many deck ideas and so little time.

Today I am looking at another blend by Liquid Proust Teas, Berry Genmaicha, which is a blend of genmaicha and strawberries with flavoring. I have a real weakness for blended Genmaicha, something it tends to just work for me…or on a few occasions fail spectacularly. Success or failure, the adventure is always fun! The aroma of this genmaicha is pretty much identical to Captain Crunch berries, I kid you not, if you stuck a box of this cereal under my nose and this tea I doubt I could tell you which is which. The resemblance is pretty hilarious, but upon further sniffing and warming the leaves with my snuffling I can pick out the toasted rice and a bit of grassy green, but for the most part this is crunch berries.

Woo, my tea area smells like Captain Crunch! It is making me laugh a bit since that was not a smell I expected to ever come out of my little houhin! Along with the very sweet crunch berries there are gentle notes of hay and spinach with a touch of rice. The liquid is all berries all the time! Super sweet and a touch of rice, but mostly it smells like a bowl of milkless cereal.

Well, this tea is both tart and sour, it is very berry but not the kind of berry I like. I love my berries very sweet, if I buy a thing of strawberries or blueberries and they are tart or sour, well, it is safe to say my day is not really ruined but certainly not improved. I was so hoping for a sweet berry burst, but alas, it was not to be. I tried a second steep and got the same result, but with more of the grassy and spinach green tea base with a nice finish of toasted rice. Sadly this blend was not for me, really, but I am sure someone who likes their berries tart would love this!

This tea smells like the strawberry Kellogg’s protein bar! It tastes exactly how it smells – there’s a warm toastiness from the genmaicha and a tartness from the berries. I’m not the biggest fan of tart tasting teas, so next time, I might add some sugar or try cold brewing it.

I received a sample of this tea from Liquid Proust (all the thanks yous!). I was excited about this one in particular since I really enjoyed the similar Razzleberry Genmaicha from 52Teas. Genmaicha in general pairs so well with sweet flavours.

There were big pieces of dried strawberry in my sample – big enough that I actually broke them apart into smaller pieces in order to measure better. The green tea is very green indeed; when the leaves are wet they look like fresh young spinach leaves. The flavour is wonderful, the malty, roasted flavour of the rice pair well the the berry flavours. I’m mostly getting strawberry but there might be a bit of blueberry in there too.

I’ve gotta say this knocked 52Teas version right out of the water. And if you’re reading this Liquid Proust, keep making more genmaicha blends with this base, you’ve got a winner. :D

I’m drinking this cold with ice. It’s very enjoyable, especially with the high heat here. The flavoring is nice and not overpowering. Another tea that I’m grateful to be drinking. Thanks, LP!

Just got my first order from Liquid Proust Teas in and wanted to try this first. This is a tasty tea with a nice berry note to it. It also has a slightly burnt note to it. All popped rice teas seem to taste like that to me. Maybe with a shorter steep time that burnt note won’t come through. Still, it was good. I will also have to try this cold brewed and see how it is iced.

I brewed this one time in a 16oz Teavana Glass Perfect Tea Maker/Gravity Steeper with 3 tsp leaf in 175 degree water for 3 min.

Cold Brew!

Personally, I wouldn’t have chosen this to cold brew but when we finished off the pitcher of Lemon Pound Cake I told my roomie he could pick any of the new teas that came in to brew a new pitcher of – this was his choice. I have to say that I do get why he picked this one: the aroma of the strawberry in the back is really intense and effervescent.

The cold brew, now that’s it’s brewed and strained, tastes fine. Fine isn’t bad; but it’s not really great either. The big “problem”, so to say, is that the brown rice in the blend doesn’t taste great cold: it’s a strong flavour and it’s a little weird to be drinking it cold. On the flip side; the berry notes are so flipping tasty! The strawberry in particular comes through a lot and it’s very juicy and ripe tasting. That element of the tea definitely makes sense to be drinking cold but there’s just too much disconnect to be drinking it paired with such a toasty/roasty element.

I definitely think I’m going to enjoy this a lot when I brew it hot though: all the flavours should come together in a way that works really well, just like I’m craving. I look forward to putting that to the test! No rating for now.

Liquid Proust

I’ll second the concept of cold brewed brown rice… I tried to ice Genmaicha a few times and that’s a no no for me now. 1st the Midwest Tea Fest we drank about 14 post of this because I made it for that event. Did you see the Instagram videos? So pretty :)

Roswell Strange

I did indeed; this really is a gorgeous blend :)

I’ve cold brewed genmaicha a couple times and don’t mind if too much, but yeah, definitely not a favourite of mine to cold brew.
