From Ippodo

The Obukucha tradition began over 10 centuries ago, during the Heian period.

In 951, a serious epidemic swept through Kyoto. In an effort to relieve the suffering, Buddhist priest Kuya distributed tea to those in need. It has been said that to share in these virtues, Emperor Murakami ushered in the New Year with a special cup of tea.

Since then, it has become a Japanese tradition to drink Obukucha (literally, Good Fortune Tea ) during the New Year’s season. The Obukucha offered by each tea shop differs depending on the shop. At IPPODO, we are pleased to offer a special time-limited, high-grade genmaicha as our Obukucha. Packaged in the traditional festive colors of red and white, we hope that our Obukucha will bring renewed health and happiness to you and your loved ones.

Wishing you and yours all the best in the New Year, and always.

Almost a perfect green tea for me. Much lighter on the roasted-rice flavor, but mixed-in very tastefully w/ the green tea. They claim they use “higher-grade” green tea leaves and it’s definitely noticeable.

Great as both a daily drinker and whenever you want to be instantly transported back to being in Japan!

Really nice, light genmaicha. Genmaicha’s sometimes get the short end of the stick in terms of leaf quality but not this guy. The flavor is nice and complex, not too sweet or too bitter, and the roasted rice rounds out the flavor nicely. I’ll be eyeing Ippodo for genmaicha in the future.

This is a limited edition tea by Ippodo that I purchased at their store in NYC. I was looking for something cheap and tasty to drink and found this to be a great affordable tea that was a cut above grocery store genmaicha. Unlike other genmaicha, the toasty roasty “popcorn” taste of the toasted brown rice is much less apparent. Instead, there is smooth and bright, juicy, lemongrass-like note that erupts in your mouth while the savory brown rice translates into a creamy avocado flavor that is sweeter in nature than the fishy, savory, umami I normally find in Japanese green teas. The tea itself is quite pretty as well. The dry bancha consists of very shiny, smooth, uniformly cut pieces that are such a rich vibrant green. I really can’t stop looking at it! Consequently, the liquor produced is a bright “spring-y” green.

I HIGHLY suggest steeping it only briefly. In my opinion, the grassier taste and additional dryness and slight bitterness that accompanies a long steeping don’t really add anything great to this tea. Brewing instructions from ippodo also suggest a short 30 second steep time and to pour out the tea completely rather than leave it continually stewing in the pot with the leaves.

Amount you get for the price makes it great for daily sipping.
