From Golden Moon Tea

Sencha is a Japanese green loose leaf tea with the delightful aroma of a fresh country meadow after the spring rains. Grown in the shadow of Mount Fuji, this smooth green tea is traditionally served to guests in Japanese homes. Not only is it beautiful in color and beneficial to the body, but also healthy and delicious.

Hmmm, I’m afraid Den’s Sencha has spoiled me. Prior to tasting their varieties, I probably would have looked on the Golden Moon Sencha as quite a nice pick. The leaves are pretty enough, the vegetal and fresh aromas are present enough, and the tea itself is tasty enough. But in each of these categories, the Den’s Sencha is head and shoulders above Golden Moon’s. Den’s has a much more substantial mouth feel and a lingering buttery sensation that is really good.

It’s alright. It’s very basic. It is rather broken, and a lot of small slivers wanted to escape my glass infuser and get into my cup. The actual tea is greenish-yellow and fairly light. I’m not having as much trouble getting flavor out of this as some other people did, but what I’m getting is basic green tea. It smells better than it delivers — the same problem I had with Adagio’s, honestly. It smells like green veggies cooked in butter, and it tastes like the kind of green tea I could get literally anywhere, without quality control.

In short, it’s not undrinkable but it’s not exciting.

Edit: The more it cooled, the more astringent it became. I don’t know whether to blame this on the pieces that escaped into the cup and were languishing on the bottom or the tea itself, but either way…not so appetizing.

This one time, in a magical far away place I had one of those incredibly expensive, smooth, beautiful, sweet sencha teas. Then I woke up and remembered that I actually did have this one from Golden Moon.

I brewed it the first time, hot, 3 minutes, no additives. The dull leaves, covered in a light green powder, brew into something gatorade yellow/green with the familiar sencha aroma. For those who never had sencha, it is vegetal, it is green, it is bright and strong green in flavor, the final note, the aftertaste is slightly sweet. This brew is pretty spot-on. Not absolutely perfect, but a good Sencha.

The second infusion, hot, 2.5 minutes, no additives, is slightly brighter, a little more vegatal, and the sweet note starts a little earlier and lasts a little longer.

Overall, another good one by Golden Moon.

I didn’t want to try this tea, but I decided to at work. It was ok… not the best sencha I’ve had. Maybe average or below average…

Color is a nice green color. Smells nice and buttery, unfortunately the taste doesn’t go with the smell. Tastes pretty bitter, with a slight buttery pretaste. Second cup no improvement even with cooler water.

I’m feeling a bit off this morning so I thought a green might be a good idea.
Trying to preserve the health benefits, I waited about 10 minutes after boiling to let the water cool.
It smells like grass and looks like a pale green (quite pale).
It tastes grassy too, and healthy. I wish I could find the healthy taste enjoyable. That would make life so much easier.
In the end, I don’t enjoy the taste but hopefully the healthy quality will help. It is why I picked it today.

You might want to try a shorter steep. I like 1.5tps of leaf in 4oz water heated to160 degree water for 1 min. If that doesn’t work, just switch:) Life’s too short to drink tea you don’t like!

Very true :) I’ve also noticed based on some other comments on the page that the second steep is better so I’ll give that a try too. On the other hand, I’ve had sencha before and didn’t care for it then so it just might be one of those teas I can’t get into.

Oh, Golden Moon…I had my mouth all set for some sencha this morning and I get…this. I dunno, this tea was a bust. I have a pack of sencha from my travels to Japan, and I gotta say, this Golden Moon sencha looked very pretty. Nice vibrantly deep green needle leaves with little tea dust. But after a 3 minute brew, it was like I was just drinking a cup of hot water. I didn’t get the slightest bit of buttery sweetness that usually comes with a sencha brew. I added a little sugar, and it was like drinking hot, sweet water!

Meh.

OH NO! Although, based on your steeping parameters I’m not quite as shocked. If you have any left, I’d suggest using the steeping parameters here http://www.denstea.com/index.php?main_page=perfect_brewing. Based on my own experiences, I think that will make a better cuppa.

My first sencha. Underwhelmed. It smells like run-of-the-mill green tea, both dry and steeped. The flavour, though, I dunno, it tastes almost a very a tiny bit…spoilt? Is that even possible? And it even has a very teensy bit of dry mouth going on, something I don’t generally associate with green tea.

I’m very glad I only had a sample of this. From your reviews, it kinda seems like I mightn’t have been able to find anyone with whom to swap the rest if it were more than a sample.

I was excited when I grabbed this little sampler, and rather enjoyed it for the first couple sips. But after two days… I’m realizing it doesn’t taste like much of anything. I tried increasing the steep time, and messing with water temperature, but results remain the same.

Disappointing, really. The leaves had that familiar vegetal scent that I’ve come to appreciate, so I had high hopes that this would land on my “favorites” list. But alas. There’s really not much to it, and (as another reviewer stated) it kind of just tastes like hot water.

I’ll have to try a different sencha somewhere down the line.

This is some bright green dry leaf. This sencha was great with the sushi I was eating. Lightly grassy, no astringency. It has a nice aftertaste.

This tea nicely resteeps 2-3 times. I can’t remember how many times I did it. I loved the 2nd resteep. I am fairly satisfied with this tea. I wouldn’t buy it, but it’s a likable sencha.
