From Golden Moon Tea

“There’s mystery to the art of finding and freeing the floral aroma and rich flavor of a pouchong tea. But the reasons Golden Moon’s Coconut Pouchong is noticeably better than others are pretty simple.

Real coconut makes this South Pacific treat buttery, smooth, and sweet.

It’s the unusually long, elegant leaves of this South Pacific delicacy that give the tea its light, slightly floral, and calming taste. As for that hint of tropical sweetness? We’ve got the nectar of young coconuts to thank.

Our Pouchong is grown in the Fujian Province, just outside of the Wuyi Mountains. The farm is located on sunbaked land that is mostly mountainous and is traditionally described to be "Eight parts mountain, one part water, and one part farmland.” That’s how we get a tea leaf with smooth floral notes, a light body, and a sweet finish.
Coconut Pouchong uses only real extract. In order to extract the coconut naturally, we start with real coconuts and roast, shred, and steep them for over one week. We then strain the coconut pieces leaving only pure coconut extract that is both smooth and buttery.

1) Bring fresh, filtered water to 180°F
2) Pour over your tea leaves in a teapot (1 spoonful of tea per serving)
3) Steep 3 minutes
4) Stir, strain, and enjoy!

This is a tea (#49) I should definitely be drinking more often. It is too amazing not to drink all the time. I mean, who doesn’t want to drink coconut cookies? Well, probably some people, but I am all for it. Delicious. I sucked it down pretty quickly.

Another big thanks to Ricky for sending me that surprise package of tea! This one smells very creamy and toasty, and maybe even buttery. I didn’t add anything to my cup.

Up front, there isn’t much coconut flavor. It’s very subtle, which is perfect, since the coconut would have been too much if it was overwhelming. This is a wonderfully smooth tea, perhaps the smoothest I’ve ever had. It has a full mouth feel – it’s very buttery and creamy. Toasty, too. What I like about the coconut is that it doesn’t taste artificial at all; it’s more like I’m drinking coconut milk that’s infused with toasted coconut.

What I like best about this is that I let my mother taste it, and she promptly sat down and ordered more – using her credit card! Score! Thanks again, Ricky!

~lauren.

A good call, that, letting your Mother taste! : )

LiberTEAS

This is one of Golden Moon’s best. It’s truly a lovely tea.

teaplz

Love my Golden Moon tea, and this one is definitely one of the best!

Ricky

Did you order the sampler too? =]

Erin

Ricky – Nope : ( No more tea on my credit card until May. I’m flat broke!!! However, come May 1st, that’s #1 on my list!

This is my tea of choice for this evening. Thank you so much ifjuly for sending me a sample of this very popular tea.
I LOVE the coconut in this. Amazing true, natural coconut flavor. I’m not so crazy about the oolong. It’s a bit too floral for me – it is much better than the other coconut oolong she sent me – but still a little floral. It is better as it cools. This is really really good, and I understand why others adore it, for me it’s good but not perfect.

(Just for the record – I’m now down under 300, not for long – there are more teas on the way to me – but for now yay 299)

Sil

Yay for 299! Celebrate the small milestones haha

Yvonne

Mmmm…

TranquiliTea81

What was the other one?? I’m still hunting for the holy grail of coconut teas!

Courtney

Coconut is the best. Woot, 299!

Dexter

The other one she sent me was Coconut Oolong by American Tea Room – that one was REALLY floral. I’m not sure what my favorite coconut oolong is but Coconut Bongo Tealish is really good and so is crazy coconut oolong Steep This. Just my thoughts….

Courtney

Hmm. I believe I’m been considering Coconut Bongo actually. And I do need more Winter Blend from Tealish. My tea orders have been out of hand this past week though.

TranquiliTea81

I might check out the one from Steep This! I have heard lots of good things about the one from Tealish but I just can’t bring myself to pay the $16 shipping to the US!

As a reward for going though many teas today, I’m having another one!

Well, at least I hope it is a reward since I’ve never had a coconut pouchong and don’t have the best luck with flavored oolongs (unless it is jasmine). But it smells like toasted coconut, not like raw coconut, so I know we are going in the right direction.

Small sampler so I am doing a small cup. And I’m sniffing the bag as I’m waiting for the tea to brew. Coconut – creamy, rich, toasted coconut. I hope I’ll like this but honestly, not expecting to.

Oooh, now that it is all brewed up, I smell the pouchong. It almost seems stronger than the coconut and surprisingly the coconut matches really well with the sweet scent of the pouchong. I love pouchong. I need to order some. I have none. :( (Wait, I have some in my Steepster cabinet – maybe I still have a little in my pantry… I thought I was out but if I do have some, happy days!)

Oh wow. That’s good. Just like the scent, the coconut doesn’t overpower the pouchong but rather they blend wonderfully together. It’s sweet but not sugary. The coconut is soft but distinctly coconut. And the pouchong is there and yummy in the way that pouchong always seems to be for me. The flavors mesh so well that it doesn’t seem like a flavored oolong – it seems like an oolong with strong coconut notes. The coconut is the first thing I taste (and smell) but it blends seamlessly into the pouchong and then I get a pouchong taste at the end, but then the flavor left in my mouth is mostly coconut but with a hint of green buttery pouchong.

It doesn’t make me want to chew the tea like some straight pouchongs do, but it’s really quite lovely. Big fan.

I’m saving this one for last, I was so tempted today! Must continue my Sencha journey.

Auggy

What can I say? I just gotta dive right in!

Carolyn

I’m so glad you guys like the Golden Moon teas. I adore them.

teaplz

Golden Moon is pretty much amazing. It has me liking licorice! LICORICE. I hate licorice! Review forthcoming!

Ricky

Yack, licorice! I have two cups of tea in front of me (pu-erh and sencha).

teaplz

Ricky, are they both GM? The White Licorice is technically star anise, which isn’t really the same thing, but… yeah. Extremely similar flavor profiles. I hate pure licorice much more, though.

Ricky

Sencha is GM, Pu-erh is Rishi. I’ll post a log soon… if I can keep my eyes open. For all the caffeine I’m drinking, it’s not working. Now if someone told me I won the sorapot, I think I’d be wide awake =P Is it Friday yet?

I ♥ NewYorkCiTEA

lol @ Ricky’s post. Ya’ll are giving me so many tea companies I want to try! I’m not normally a fan of tropical/coconut flavors but this one sounds yum.

Ricky

GM’s sampler is only $20 for 31 samples, each sampler gives you one-two cups. Totally worth it! s topped off with a ribbon o.O

I ♥ NewYorkCiTEA

Oh wow! I’m noting that tidbit for later use. I need to drink some more of what I have before I can order more. I think I’m going to go wild in 2010 ordering samplers since I’ve found out more about places to order tea online. Thanks Steepster!

teaplz

Yep, chrine! It’s the entirety of GM’s catalog! When I ordered, the coupon code “teareviewblog” gave me free shipping, although I don’t know if it’s in effect anymore. I pretty much bullied everyone into buying it, which is why everyone is trying to pressure me into getting EVERYTHING ELSE. But the sampler was really worth it, because I really haven’t found a bad one in the bunch.

takgoti

Hot damn! 91?! That’s high praise.

Auggy

Hey! I have 19 whole teas that I’ve rated a 90 or above! …out of 185… But still!

I’ve actually been thinking about this tea some lately. Mostly because it reminded me how much I s probably one of my favorite types of tea. So this tea has reminded me I should never be without pouchong again!

Tea of the afternoon…….

Since I love coconut and was drawn in by all the reviews of this one, I broke down ordered it from a vendor other than Golden Moon that was running a free shipping special. It definitely was not a hardship, because I had to buy $5 worth of British chocolate to go along with it to reach my minimum. Yes, you can start feeling sorry for me, now.

As for the tea…..yum. Sweet and creamy, light and smooth. I could get used to this…..

Mug method with about 185 water for 3 minutes. I did very lightly sweeten this just to bring the coconut out a little.

Cheryl

Where did you order this from? This particular tea keeps haunting me (I really liked Adagio’s version which is cheaper).

SimplyJenW

I got it from EnglishTeaStore.com. They have free shipping for orders over $20. code ETS2012 until Feb. 13, 2012.
I usually order Earl Grey Cream…which is the same as Teavana’s but cheaper…. and Bourbon Street Vanilla Rooibos from them because their prices are inexpensive for Metropolitain Teas (a tea vendor that supplies many tea shops). They also have many cool English things….

Honestly, if you like the one from Adagio, stick with that one.

Cheryl

Well thanks for squashing one compulsive urge … but then you turned around and created another. Haha, you’re bad. My Amazon order is in Toledo…what the heck is it doing in Toledo? heh.

Cheryl

Oh my…Dinosara’s review of Earl Grey Cream mentions cheesecake (opening up ETS’s website).

Cheryl

Metro blend or not? Hmmm, I’ve had this site open before and wondered same thing. $25 isn’t a high barrier to meet. Any other recommendations? (not a huge rooibos fan)

SimplyJenW

I get the Metro. I liked their black tea base better than Adagio’s, but all I have kept is the Earl Grey Cream. The problem is samples….I ordered there after sampling in smaller amounts other places like Culinary Teas. Those that I liked…Lady Londonderry, Angel’s Dream, and Monk’s Blend…. They also sell some bagged Harney teas. And you just have to get to $20. Or….I have quite a bit of the Earl Grey Cream…..;)

TeaBrat

Although I have been a bit disappointed in GM’s offerings I do love this one…

SimplyJenW

@Amy oh…it is my first GM tea!

Cheryl

I bumped into Harney by searching “coconut” and thought “omg, not them again haunting me too” hehehe. I will probably go down the GM path with samples later on, so will try and keep it under control for now. I hear ya Jen, lol … can handle this urge and am going to ignore you now until I get this order placed…hahaha.

TeaBrat

Yeah it was sad, I ordered a bunch from them and I loved this but the rest were just … meh

SimplyJenW

@Amy…my plans are pretty much to skip the rest. This seemed to be the only GM tea that has a true following. I have learned to trust the multitudes for wisdom on some things…..on others, not so much.

ashmanra

I liked GM Vanilla Jasmine. It smells like cream soda or root beer!

Cheryl

Sorry for hijacking your tea review Jen. Ordered GM Coconut Pouchong (urge too large and must compare) and both versions of EGC and that’s it (phew). Like that can pay through PP, since don’t like using debit card online, and PP is safer than using CC << keeping purchases under control, lol (CC is way too easy to abuse). Thanks for code : )
p.s. Amy pushed me back towards the GM one too (which originally started all this). Bad Amy (I jest) : )

Cheryl

PP not safer than CC… meant it helps curb urge to use CC wildly

SimplyJenW

Cheryl…I look forward to your reviews! :D

Ashmanra…going to check that one out as I see a GM purchase in my future.

SimplyJenW

Cheryl….you can hijack my reviews anytime.. :)

Cheryl

See how we can all be enablers? (resist Jen, be strong) lol

SimplyJenW

I have this tin that will last a little while…

Cheryl

Uh huh … (smirks while noticing she added “little” to the “while”)

Dinosara

This thread is already crazy long but I just had to chime in and say I love this tea so much! It’s one of my must haves (and incidentally one that I’m out of at the moment. hmm…)

TeaBrat

I’m not a fan of jasmine so of course I liked this one. It’s like a macaroon in a glass. :)

I absolutely love this one. Slightly sweet, creamy coconut in flavor, a touch silky. Just divine. I am running low and drinking is sparingly but I will be keeping this one on my permanent list.

I’m in heaven with teas today! I decided to open this tea up since I have managed to finish a lot of tea recently. Oh my goodness! I now remember why I bought this tea! The scent is intoxicatingly delicious.

First off, I love oolong. This one has nice, wiry but thick black/brown dry leaves. The scent is like I just made some coconut milk from a ripe coconut. As for color of the brewed tea, I can’t really comment on this as I was using my green colored tea cup! The scent and flavor of the brewed tea is amazing. It tastes like coconut water… not like the ones you buy from the store (all of them do not taste natural… they taste like there were additives put in there). This one is pure, buttery, and smooth. There was no astringency or bitterness at all. The one thing I noticed is that the taste is not as strong as the scent, which is a good thing.

Wow! Overall, this is a great tea! This is getting excited about my upcoming wedding celebration in the Philippines in January.

Backlogging from my trip. This one was another winner in the iced tea category for me. The coconut flavor is pronounced, sharp, and not artifical tasting at all; this tea’s flavor is reminiscent of those unsweetended coconut water drinks sold at Whole Foods. I would have to say this is my favorite Golden Moon tea by far.

This one was sent my way by Stephanie :)

This one seems quite similar to Coconut Oolong from David’s. Though I generally prefer darker oolongs, so perhaps someone with more of a palate for green oolongs would say differently.

It’s green oolong-y, it’s coconutty. Overall a tasty tea.

I’ve been researching fisheries and bycatch all day, and I am almost overwhelmed with the data I’ve found. There’s too much! Well, there’s too much to wade through to find what I need to find.
