From Golden Moon Tea

A Fujian black tea scented with the succulent dragon eye fruit. Dragon eye has a sweet, juicy flavor that slightly resembles the flavor of melon. Combined with the natural sweetness found in the black tea base, this tea is best served “neat” without any milk or sugar.

Backlog. Thank you to TheDJBooth for sending me this one!

This had been in my “Try” basket for a while and I finally got around to making it the other day. This one was iced by pouring over ice. Is “Dragon Eye fruit” supposed to be dragonfruit…..? I can’t tell….. Anyways, I love dragonfruit. It’s unique and I think pretty tasty! This tea however…… Not so much.

Not that it’s bad because it’s definitely not horrible but, like others have said, it’s very perfumy. Like a fruit and flower perfume. Not so much my thing, but I’m glad I got to try it! Thanks again TheDJBooth!

I’m not sure if this is the same fruit the tea is supposed to taste like but there’s a fruit that translates to dragon eye from Chinese. This fruit is more popularly called longan or long an. They are similar to lychees only less floral and sweeter. The shell is also smooth and brown instead of rough and reddish. It’s called dragon eye because when peeled you can see the dark pit through the translucent white flesh. It looks like an eyeball. And dragon eyeballs are delicious. They’re in season late summer and very pricy. But so tasty! Again, I’m not sure if this is the fruit the tea is supposed to taste like. Just thought I’d share. :)

Interesting… Thanks! I may have to take a trip to an Asian supermarket to see if they have any!

Mercuryhime

They are usually sold with branches attached since plucking them tears the protective shell. Good luck finding them! It’s not that easy. A Chinatown might be a better bet later in the summer. :)

I received this one from Infusin_Susan. So there is almost a full tin here. I opened it and whoa! There is a very strong aroma here. Maybe a little perfume like. So I tried it the first time and I thought okay. Interesting(thinking oh boy I have a whole tin of this to drink). I tried it again this morning. I have to say it’s not a bad tea at all. I wouldn’t call it a daily drinker, but I’m more of a straight tea drinker. It reminds me somewhat of lychee tea(and according to wikipedia it is a cousin of the lychee) that I have had. There is almost a grapefruit like flavor that abounds from this tea. It’s not knock my socks off amazing or terrible either.

This is a very, very scented tea. It doesn’t really taste like dragonfruit the way it really comes off as lychee.

I made it for iced tea, and it feels like as it gets colder it cuts down on the very perfumelike taste this has. It’s not too bad but I’m not big on flavors like this.

Thanks for some to try, The DJBooth!

I wasn’t wild about this. It smelled wonderful — like a mixture of black tea and tropical fruit. But when I drank it, there was something unpleasant about it. I felt like I was drinking fruit-scented soap or some type of cleansing product. I could still taste the black tea, which was perfectly good, but that unpleasant soapy note really put me off.

This is the April 2011 selection for Golden Moon’s Single Leaf club.

The idea of scenting teas is new to me. I will admit that I avoid scented products in my day to day life (e.g. unscented detergent, fabric softener, lotion, etc….) When it comes to tea, I love the scent of certain spices but scenting with fruits or flowers is not something I would seek out.

This tea has an obvious fruit scent for both the dry leaves and steeped leaves. The scent of the brewed tea itself is pretty subtle, so not objectionable for me. The tea itself seems to be a pretty basic black tea. Nothing special. Golden Moon recommends drinking the tea “neat” however, I found that a touch of milk smoothed the sharpness of the tea.

For my tastes, there is nothing really wrong with this tea, but nothing special either. I would prefer to drink other teas instead. I’m looking forward to trying some of the other teas that are mentioned as sample club items….a unique assam, first flush darjeeling, golden snail yunnan, etc….

I quite like this tea. You really get the scent of the fruit on the front. Drinking it, the fruit is much less pronounced, but I really like this tea. I enjoyed it even more on the third steeping. I put a couple of pieces of german rock sugar in there, excellent.
