From Dessert by Deb

Ooooh is this one ever special! A little French, a little Japanese, and all sorts of delicious and sweet, Matcha Cream Puff is inspired by classic dainty choux pastry (think mini cream puffs and profiteroles) and Japanese matcha dessert cafes. One of my favourite desserts in the city is the matcha cream puff from Tsujiri. With a golden crackly domed top, it oozes sweet matcha cream filling and I wanted to recreate that in a tea blend!

Sencha green tea is dusted and blended with ceremonial matcha and mixed with maple flakes (for that crackly cream puff “texture”) and a heaping dose of shredded coconut reminiscent of cream puff filling for a sweet and creamy green tea infusion. Indulge in a matcha themed afternoon tea party with this one!

Certified organic ingredients: Green Tea, Coconut, Canadian Maple, Ceremonial Matcha

Handcrafted in Toronto, Canada.

Steeping instructions: 2 tea spoons at 200F for 4-6 mins

Although this blend sounded amazing, the first time I tried it it fell pretty flat for me. However, I had another cup yesterday and it was much tastier – I got a really nice, creamy matcha flavour with a bit of coconut. Wouldn’t be a repurchase, but a pleasant enough cup.

This was a free sample with one of my orders, and not something I would order for myself as I’m not a huge coconut fan and also haven’t had great luck with Deb’s other matcha green teas. I cold brewed the whole sample packet in about a liter of water overnight.

Yep, it’s coconut all right. But also the seaweedy umami note of the matcha pokes its head out every once in a while which makes it coconut seaweed. It also just tastes oily to me, probably because of the coconut.

Nope, not for me!

This is one of my favorites from her, I’ve bought probably 20+ oz of it (although only used around 4 oz so far), but I’m a lover of coconut. :)

It’s fun how we all have such different tastes! But I can totally see this being a favorite for someone who loves coconut teas.

I love the idea of this tea. But, it just smells and taste like coconut. Not getting any matcha or cream puff. Sadly, I don’t really care for coconut, so this tea is a huge cup of nope for me.

Silent Kettle

Yes! I wanted to love this one! I think since Deb is going for a dessert vibe, I would have loved to see this one with some icing sugar to give it a more dessert-like feel.

I tested out my theory that this needed more maple to balance out the overwhelming coconut flavour, so I mixed some David’s Tea maple matcha into this, and I think it helped balance out the heavy coconut taste. I think I should have steeped this for a shorter amount of time or at a lower temperature because it also tasted kind of bitter. I think I need to keep experimenting with this tea to get it right.

So this was a free sample from the group order I placed with VariaTEA and Sil – it’s not a tea that I wanted to try from the website, and so in some ways I am glad I have received it free because I doubt I ever would have tried it of my own accord…

However, I gave the dry leaf a smell when I got the box from VariaTEA and… oof.

Not only did this smell so intense and strong, but the intense and strong thing it smelled like was that horribly sweet “Whipped Cream Vodka” that I drank way too much of when I was in high school/living with borderline alcoholics. It was like being assaulted with nostalgia at the same time as the pain of a dozen hangovers.

It tastes like Whipped Cream Vodka too – really intense, creamy and sweet but also quite artificial and a like bit chemical with a slight burn in the back of your throat. For all of those reasons, I have to say that “cream puff” is probably an accurate description/name. I’m not sure I got matcha through all of that thick flavouring. I actually didn’t hate it, and I think with something in it (like milk) to take the edge off what is frankly just a lot of layered flavouring it would actually be quite enjoyable. However, it’s right on the cusp of being too sweet/strong ever for me – and I like sweet a lot…

I had maybe one or two cups were I enjoyed this and could sort of taste the matcha.. and then it kind of went downhill from there. It is a bit much.

This was one I was looking at in my second order but ultimately decided not to buy. So, when I opened the box and this was one of the samples, I was pretty happy to get a chance to try it.

Now having tried it, I’m happy I didn’t buy it. It’s not bad but I don’t think it’s a cream puff either. I get a lot of maple and some coconut cream mixed with green tea. So it’s like maple matcha coconut cream. I am dozing off so I’m hoping the matcha will be a pick me up but other than that, this isn’t doing much for me.

Crowkettle

Ah, that’s too bad! Did you get the Marshmallow Crispy Square too?

VariaTEA

I did. And no worries. I find some of her blends fall flat and sort of end up with a sweet maple flavor and nothing really builds on it. Others of her blends are quite good though. At least I didn’t end up with 25 grams of this haha

This was kindly included as a free sample from Dessert by Deb. By the way, the packaging was absolutely adorable, with owl and tea stickers all over the parcel, pink paper, a hand written postcard, note paper, and coordinated gold, silver, and pink coloured tea packets.

To me, this tastes exactly like a Matcha Cream Puff so I can’t really complain. Coconut, rice, and the more buttery qualities of the matcha create a convincing cream filled pastry profile. Maple Crystals sells the dessert.

I like this a lot more than the Marshmallow Crispy Square, which while relatively tasty is also (maybe overly) coconut heavy. The coconut in the Cream Puff is a lot more balanced and complimentary. Also, Matcha Genmaicha is generally more fun than regular Genmaicha so there’s that going for it too!

I got this as a sample in my second order. Perhaps I will need to try it sooner rather than later

Hopefully this one works out for you! Results have varied slightly for me but it’s usually decent to good!
