If you’ve read the Green Tea and Health section of our web site, you know that some of the healthy ingredients in green tea are antioxidants called catechins. There is one tea with a special catechin (Methyl Catechin) which has become renowned for its ability to fight the symptoms of hay fever. We are happy to announce that we now carry Benifuki tea, a powdered tea with this powerful catechin. Benifuki is a species of tea that was invented at the National Institute of Vegetable and Tea Science (NIVTS) in 1993. It was originally developed manufacturing black tea. The NIVTS conducted a study of teas from 1996 to 2000 to find if tea can help ease the symptoms of allergies. They found that if Benifuki was processed into green tea it was rich in Methylated Catechins and this ingredient was effective suppressing histamine, the cause of itchy eyes and a runny nose.
As mentioned, Benifuki was originally developed for black tea, but Methyl Catechin is generated in this species of tea only when it is processed into green tea. Also our Benifuki is made with pan parching method instead of the regular steaming process. This reduces the bitterness of the tea considerably. Further we made it into a powdered tea so that the ingredients are easily absorbed into human body. (Since you are consuming the leaf, we selected only chemical-free leaves.) You can have not only Methyl Catechin, but all the good ingredients instantly. Hay fever can ruin the wonderful season of spring for so many of our customers. We have been interested in introducing Benifuki in North America because of all the wonderful comments from our customers in Japan who suffer from hay fever. We hope you give it a try and enjoy being outdoors during the warmer months this year.
Preparation is easy. Pour one 0.4 gram bag into a 5oz of hot or cold water and mix well. Since it is individually packed, you can take it anywhere.

I’ve been drinking this occasionally over the past few weeks but forgot to log it. I rather like it! It’s much milder than the powdered sencha. Sweeter, and hay-like. My boyfriend is a big fan of Den’s powdered sencha and stands by that, but I find this more pleasant to drink in the winter. It’s like gently flavoured water when I use it with more than the suggested amount of water, and even cold it’s warming somehow (I haven’t tried it hot yet). Plus, perfect format for work.
I got this as a sample with my Shincha, and was pleasantly surprised with it! I may have used too much water, also the water was room temperature and neither hot or cold. Having things in it to suppress histamines, this might be a good present for my mom since she has pretty bad allergies at times. Wonder if it would help me when the vog is strong and I suffer with itchy eyes and runny nose? The little packet is the perfect size to carry around. Also, no clumps. When I plopped the whole thing in the bottle, there were clumpy bits so I thought it’d be like when i didn’t sift and my matcha has clumps and stick that way even when shaken but the benefuki powder dissolved really nicely. Not even a chalky texture at all while drinking.

Anyway, even being old, I really like this. It’s bright, with that vegetal bitter note I was expecting. I don’t think I’ll rush to buy it (again…in my dream world, my tea budge would be HUGE….), but it’s definitely a nice cup.
I wonder what it would taste like if it hadn’t been hiding in my tea drawer for such a long time….
Den’s Tea sent this along as a sample with my order. I’m generally not a fan of powdered teas (matcha excepted, since it’s prepared differently). It’s really hard to get them mixed in properly. With this one, most of the powder settled in the bottom of the mug within a minute or two of mixing. I tried stirring again but the powder settled anyway.
This tastes ok. Nothing spectacular, but not unbearable either. A little seaweed-y. Drinkable, if it wasn’t for all that danged powder at the bottom. Wouldn’t buy it myself.
does it seem to help your allergies?
I actually don’t have allergies, so I don’t know if it helps! I just like the taste. I have been really congested for the past couple weeks so I should really re-visit it.
