Sipdown – oh yeah! (152)

I’m happy Janelle was able to send me a little of this. I was curious about how it would taste, but it’s not really my thing. I’m not huge into licorice/fennel/pepper. Intersting, but I’ll pass.

So I’m happy I didn’t end up with 2 oz of it!

I really love this one. It’s spicy and interesting and a little sweet. I always seem to reach for it when I don’t know what else to drink, and I think I’m definitely going to have to buy some.

This time around I’m noticing much more apple, which I think rounds out the flavor well. This could easily become over-spiced and too hot, but the apple tempers the pepper and makes it sweet and a little fruity.

This is probably the most interesting tea I’ve ever tasted. The apple and fennel make it both spicy and sweet. It reminded me of the good blend of spices you often find in Indian dishes…not the same spices, but that kind of perfect blend. Yum! Perfect for a cold winter evening!

Bonnie

Sounds good. I like fennel.

I purchased this tea for my husband since he likes fennel. I didn’t pay much attention to what other ingredients were in it, but wow, that pepper is something else. My husband likes it ok and says that, for him, the fennel comes through stronger than the pepper.

I didn’t pick up on the apple, but it may have been there. I was too focused on the pepper. I kept saying “this is a really weird tea” and my husband asked if that was how I was going to log it. Well, yeah, basically. Pepper in tea is weird for me. It’s tolerable, but it doesn’t feel like I’m drinking tea. I didn’t hate it, but I don’t know if I’ll ever go out of my way for another cup because when I want tea, I want tea.

Anyone know what are the health benefits of the peppercorns?

Used in Indian medicine for ions and used for everything from toothache to digestive issues. Antioxidant properties. This is a drupe like walnuts and almonds. Pink peppercorns are a fruit and not a true pepper. The Romans valued pepper like gold.

Oh, thanks Bonnie! When you say that pink peppercorns are not true pepper, does that mean the other info you gave relevant to the pink peppercorns specifically or to other pepper?

Bonnie

I was commenting on real black pepper (green and white too…the same pepper just dried differently), not pink berries which are called pepper but are not.

I’ve been craving licorice, or a licorice tea, and I’m so happy I found this one in the Tea and cards TTB. It’s exactly what I needed, and it has a beautiful natural sweetness that I very much appreciate. The spice level is just right as well.

I haven’t had many fennel teas but if this is an example, well, yeah, I’m in! I like the fennel, spice and peppercorns. Can’t really taste any apple but with the others tastes in there it makes sense. I guess I just wouldn’t expect to taste apple hidden in fennel, spice and peppercorns. This is a boldly flavored tea that has “good for you” fennel. Hey, I just read that may help in weight loss and flushes out toxins. Good news! It’s a great tea hot, I wonder what it will be like cold?

Even dry this tea is a bit…stinky, for lack of a better word. I wasn’t all that excited to steep it, but figured I might as well get it out of the way so I could figure out if it was worth keeping.

Post-brew it was a bit interesting, still. The pepper still sits at the forefront of the taste and has a definite burn, both during and after each sip. You can faintly taste the fennel in behind the burn…and I can almost tell that there’s some apple/cinnamon/spice layered deep under the rest of it.

I’m tolerating the burn today – although not what I would consider pleasant – because it does such a nice job of clearing out my stuffy nose. It’s not one I’d be willing to drink in the future, though, so into the swap drawer it goes.
