Cream of Earl Grey Matcha

I actually prefer the regular EG matcha, which isn’t what I was expecting. I think the cream flavoring was maybe a little artificial, and since it was there, I didn’t get quite as much bergamot deliciousness. The second time I had this, I tasted a lot more bergamot, and I didn’t notice the artificial flavor from before. I noticed a hole in this packet from the 2022 matcha advent calendar, so I had to go ahead and make it. The inside of the calendar was quite coated in a matcha mess. Two other matcha packages had burst open, so I had to throw the calendar away to avoid spreading the mess. I look forward to trying the many new matcha flavors anyway!

I really enjoyed this tea. I did find just a touch of milk added to the creaminess and flavor (when served hot.) Earl Grey lovers will like this one!

Didn’t love this one. I should have known because I don’t love Earl Grey unless they’re flavoured and I don’t love matchas unless they’re flavoured. So flavouring them as each other wasn’t really for me.

2022 Sipdown 45/365!

Just a sipdown of one bag. Had a latte, in a colour-changing mug. Could have used a tad more matcha for more flavour, but it was fine.

This is wonderful. Quite sweet, but it’s not overpowering like it is in some other DAVIDsTEA flavoured matchas. The creaminess is dominant, but the bergamot is still nice and bright making this unmistakably an earl grey tea. The matcha flavour doesn’t really come through, but when comparing this to the original Cream of Earl Grey, you can really tell that the black tea base is absent by the utter lack of astringency. Even whisked into hot water without milk, this tastes like a London fog. The perfect indulgent cup of tea for chilly days.

This past week we launched/refeatured a bunch of “Earl Grey” teas/blends as part of a focus on Earl Grey, and that included two new Earl Grey inspired matchas and a rerelease of last year’s Bergamot Kisses under the new name “Chocolate Earl Grey”. This is one of the new matchas, and of the two it’s the one I prefer. Both are limited edition, and I find it really interesting that we decided to launch two variants because they of course feel quite similar – but it’s the “Cream” part that sets them apart, and I guess it follows the thought process that there are people who buy/drink and love both regular EG and CEG. What I imagine will likely happen is that one of these matchas will resonate stronger than the other though…

Like a “battle of the matchas”…

I would describe the flavour of this as vanilla/cream first and then bergamot second. It’s quite sweet, and feels rich and decadent with really comparable custardy vanilla notes to Cream of Earl Grey. I think the bergamot feels a bit fresher and brighter but I also think that might just be a bit of an illusion from the matcha base just being brighter than a black tea base. Similar to how bergamot on green tea, like in Countess of Seville, always seems more citrusy to me than it does on black tea.

I do own another “Creamy Earl Grey” matcha, and I’ve compared the two and I think this one is more creamy/vanilla than what I already have. As a person who is less of a bergamot fan than a vanilla fan, that makes this approach more enjoyable to me. Though, I like the “Creamy Earl Grey” I own more than the straight Earl Grey matcha. So I suppose what I’m really saying is that, for my own tastes, I want an EG matcha with as little bergamot as possible. If that’s what you want, you might enjoy this one also.

It’s also a fucking awesome latte.
