From DAVIDsTEA

Is there a more perfect dessert than a banana split? From the drizzle of chocolate sauce to the signature sliced banana, it’s three scoops of nostalgic greatness. So, what genius invented this malt shop classic? It wasn’t a restaurateur or even a chef – it was dreamed up in 1904 by David Evans Strickler, a 23-year old apprentice pharmacist in Pennsylvania. And with chocolate, banana and sweet meringue, this rich and creamy treat brings the taste of his soda fountain treat right to your tea cup. Now you can have sundae…every day.

Ingredients: Green rooibos, cocoa nibs, rock sugar, banana chips, calendula, meringue powder, natural and artificial flavouring.

Price: $7.50

Rich chocolate takes centre stage, followed by the gentle flavour of banana. Decadent, full body that balances its main flavour notes perfectly. This tea tastes as close to a gourmet hot chocolate as one can get, and though it’s great cold, it really shines when brewed hot. I don’t think I could get tired of drinking this.

Not as good as my Pure Vanilla, but it still tasted quite yummy. I am warming up to Rooibos and teas with chocolate in them, so this one was a pleasant cup.

My tea stuff has been spread throughout my entire house so today I decided to gather everything up and organize my tea drawers/clean all my teaware. This meant my kitchen was covered with a million bowls of teaware just soaking in polident. I even pulled apart my gravity steepers to get all the tea residue off the hard to reach silicone seals. Now, everything is quite shiny again which is nice.

All the while, I decided to brew up the last of this leaf as a latte. Unfortunately between the eggnog and milk, this came off rather bland and the rooibos was more prominent than it was in the plain cup. Not sure what went wrong but this leaf is not gone and I’m okay with that.

Nice, I swear by Polident for my teaware too. So glad to have learned that little trick.

This one really amazed me on the first sip! I had it as an iced latte and it tasted just like a banana/chocolate milkshake. However, as it is really sweet, I felt a little nauseous after drinking it all! But still a nice tea and a great alternative to other sweet and unhealty snacks.

This is one of very few rooibos blends that I can actually drink. I steep (hot) just long enough to melt the chocolate before adding to almond milk to cold-steep for several hours (usually 8+). I enjoy it, but I don’t feel compelled to stock up. I prefer Copabanana because that blend actually tastes like a banana split. This tastes like a chocolate-covered banana.

So, I actually had this when it first came out, and I was negligent on writing a tasting note. I had it as an iced latte, and I went back the same day for another one, only iced with milk rather than a latte (which actually was not as good). I had it again recently, enjoyed it, and decided to make it my FS redemption. It’s not the most expensive tea to get my money’s worth, but I feel like I’ll use the 50g and then probably get tired of it by the time the bag is done. That said, I had it as an iced latte again today, at home (via cold steep in mason jar) and using more leaf will mean the bag is finished sooner.

I love the banana and chocolate taste of this one. And, even though it does have a bit of that weird artificial taste, I can handle it in this blend. Almost as good as the banana and chocolate flavour is that it is 1) caffeine free and 2) a green rooibos, which I can totally do! Really looking forward to more steeps with this one. Like I said, I may be sick of it by the time the bag is done, but at least it was a free bag. :)

Drinking this straight up and unsweetened. It appeared to be just rooibos in the dry leaf that I had captured in my spoon, but after steeping, I am finding banana and chocolate in every sip. Sweet but nicely so. Certainly from era before DTs decided to stevia everything to death. Lovely.

Raising my rating up a notch or two.

Totally and absolutely agree with you.

Once David left, there seemed to have been an abrupt departure from the many blends from DTs that had caught my attention to an overly sweetened style AND with many that just reeked of artificial flavourings. There are still a few that I think are pretty awesome, but all in all, that and their having gotten rid of the previous frequent steeper awards and dramatic price increases and I no longer choose to shop there. I will buy the occasional thing, but I used to drop serious money there on a monthly basis.

Their target audience now, I think, is the very young who would otherwise be drinking sodas or other highly sweetened beverages. Oh well.

Cold Brew!

This was the only tea out of DT’s “Old Timey Treats” collection I was actually interested in trying, and I made a special trip out to the store after work last week just to pick up a sample of it because I was so damn curious.

It’s quite good! The banana is clearly a “Banana Candy”/“Bananas & Cream” sort of flavour and it’s super rich and sweet without being overwhelmingly sweet which was definitely my biggest concern about this blend given that it unfortunately has pre-added rock sugar. I’m not a fan of having my teas sweetened for me; but luckily it kind of works here. The cocoa is great too; I’m really happy to see the use of nibs over chocolate chips – maybe DT is finally listening to consumer feedback? And the green rooibos base is perfect too; it creates such a subtle backdrop and doesn’t really directly influence the flavour. More green rooibos please, DT!

Overall this is 100% banana split, like intended, so major brownie points for hitting the nail on the head with the flavor. I really enjoyed the cold brew, I can definitely see myself going through a lot of it if given the chance. And just imagine how great this would be as a latte! So creamy and delicious; am I right!?

Ah, I may need to try this. Love banana teas.

it’s great as a latte!

Yes, you are right!!!

I really like this as an iced latte! Sooo good! I am thrilled that they used green rooibos here. Regular would have ruined it.
