Use your melon

Whether you’re looking for a pick-me-up or just a great tasting drink, steeping a cup of this tea is one of the smartest things you can do. For starters, it’s got green yerba maté, for a smooth-drinking, all-natural energy boost. Then it has green rooibos, which is packed with so much good stuff, it’s even better for you than regular rooibos. And on top of it all, it’s got the fresh, juicy taste of honeydew melon. Energizing, healthy AND delicious? This one’s a no brainer.

Ingredients: green yerba mate, green rooibos white hibiscus blossoms, melon pieces, natural flavouring.

In exactly three weeks at precisely this time, I will be a newly married woman! I can’t believe the wedding is so close. I’ve waited my whole life for this moment, and now it’s almost here! Eeeeeeehhh!!!

Well, on to the task at hand. This was a free sample with my latest DAVIDsTEA order. I recently broke my favorite travel mug: a double-walled glass tumbler from DAVIDsTEA. Luckily, it was in stock on the website! So, I was able to buy a replacement immediately. While I was at it, I figured I might as well pick up some tea! Shhh, just don’t tell the fiancé. I’m technically not allowed to buy any more tea. :P But I only picked up a small package of Love Tea #7, so my stash hasn’t noticeably grown. ;)

I don’t usually like mate all that much, but I’m willing to give this one a go! The dry leaf of this sample smells sweetly of honeydew melon. The brewed tea aroma is a nice combination of honeydew and mate. First sip is surprisingly yummy! It’s juicy and flavorful and reminds me of a Honeydew Skittle. Mmm, those tropical Skittles are so yummy.

Anyway, this is a really lovely tea. The green rooibos helps even out the mate. The melon flavor tastes true and authentic, not artificial at all. Of course, I am comparing the honeydew taste to Skittles, which isn’t the most dependable comparison. But I don’t believe I’ve ever eaten a real honeydew melon before. So, it’s all I’ve got!

I am pleasantly surprised by this tea. The only negative I can think of is that with each sip, I seem to feel the caffeine hit my system. It’s an impact that first strikes my soft palette and then moves up into my head. It’s an odd sensation but tolerable. Thanks to DAVIDsTEA for the free sample!

Gabriela

Have fun on your wedding!! Congrats.

Yay, hope all goes well! My friend is getting married in three weeks in Mexico, and my sister in 3.5 weeks (not in Mexico, haha). So I will be very much in the wedding spirit at the same time as you (although hopefully much less stressed?)

This tea surprised me, it was actually really good. I am not a huge mate fan, but this one was more than okay, it was delightful. I tried it cold steeped from the fridge. What I liked most about this tea was the subtlety of the mate. The dominant flavour, to me, was definitely the melon, the mate just served to enhance the melon notes. I was really impressed with this tea, I am going to have to give it a shot brewed hot as well.

Yvonne

I’d absolutely love to try this one – this sounds wonderful! Glad you enjoyed it :)

It was a very different mate than others I have had!

You know why I love Steepster? (Or, one of the reasons, at least.) Because I learn so much from all of you awesome people. Like cold brewing. I’d never heard of the wonder of cold brewing until I joined here. I used to make my iced tea like a barbarian! Boiling water on hot, sweaty days just to steep and pour over ice. And I’d always over-ice, so I would have to guzzle it down before it all melted and watered-down the tea.

But now, thanks to your knowledge, I just toss some tea and water in a big ol’ Mason jar, let it sit in the fridge overnight, and voila! Perfect ice cold tea ready to go. You’re all geniuses, I tell you, Genius!

So yeah, I cold brewed my sample of this. I’m not normally a huge fan of mate, but this one is good. I think the green rooibos helps to cut the mate taste. It’s very juicy, just like a big bite of melon. When I had tried this hot, I got more of an artificial watermelon taste (Anyone else remember Bubbalicious Watermelon?). But cold, it tastes more actual honeydew! And the smell… pure overripe melon goodness.

Fuzzy_Peachkin

teehee! I’m still boiling like a barbarian! I need to try this!

Lindsey

Oh, it’s the greatest thing ever!

I always forget I want to coldbrew something, and then I wake up in the morning and think, “Oh crap! I forgot to put tea in the fridge again!LOL!

I am on tea drinking mission, as I have many tea’s to sample and rate not only from swaps, but also from my own stash – so many that I have not yet logged on virtual cupboard.

This one came my from a swap with Aimee – that you so much!!

The first time I tried this tea, I held off rating it, because I didn’t pull the melon flavour from it. I don’t know what I did wrong the last time, but I know from personal habits, I sometimes don’t use enough leaf, and put in too much water. This time I intentionally used a smaller cup and added more leaf. Now I taste the melon.

As a hot beverage it is ok. I taste the melon, and a little bit of the bubble gum after taste that has been mentioned in other tasting notes.

I think this tea will probably shine iced or cold brewed which is my next mission for this tea.

I got this as a sample with my order. I’ve wanted to try this, but didn’t want to buy it because I cannot get behind mate.

This smells so delicious, fresh & juicy, both dry & as its steeping.
This is the best mate I’ve had. You get the fruity, juicy melon flavour at the front of the sip & a slight earthy, dryness from the mate.
Really good & I definitely want more.

Dry Leaf Nose: Honeydew melon nose.

Liquor: Pale green.

Flavour Notes: Melon notes are prominent and sweet – reminiscent of a ripe honey dew melon. The mate shows itself in the finish and a bit in the middle while the melon takes the spotlight.

Sweet. Good melon flavour. Reminds me a bit of tutti fruity flavour. Roast mate flavour present. I don’t feel that it is the best compliment to this fruity blend.

Meh…not thrilled with this one. It certainly isn’t horrible, but it also doesn’t wow me. I do love the smell of the honeydew though, and it is nice to have a stimulating tea that isn’t caffeine based (though I don’t know if the component in mate is any better than caffeine or the same but in a different package, so to speak). I guess I am not a huge mate fan. I can see how this might be nice iced, but hot it was kinda bland. I dunno, I might change my mind on a future steeping.

This tea was better than I was expecting. The subtle sweet honeydew notes balances well with this mate base. The honeydew maybe wasn’t quite as strong as I was hoping, but it is very good.

Cold: this tea is very refreshing and seems a little sweeter

This tea is fantastic. I was looking forward to it after I read the description on steepster before it came out. In the bag it smells like a fruity bubble gum almost. I steeped it up hot and it was nice, but from the first sip I knew it was a tea that was meant to be iced. My next cup, I iced, and I was right, it makes for a beautiful iced tea… I am definitely going to get a tin of this guy to keep around for the summer so I can make pitchers of it… I suspect it will be delicious with Malibu melon rum… and cut up melon chunks for a pitcher of cocktails in the dog days of summer :)
