Taffy Terror (Organic)

Yes, I realize it’s a bit late for a Halloween tea. But really, the zombie apocalypse could happen at anytime. Best to be prepared: keep your cricket bat next to the door and have plenty of tea on hand.

This is a wonderfully sweet green tea blend. The base tea is not drowned out by the apricot or the caramel, though both are fairly strong. Apricot and caramel are two flavors I’d never think to pair (apricot and dark chocolate, yes, and caramel with apples, of course), but it works very, very well. The scent is nearly completely caramel, but the sip balances out and all the flavors can be tasted. Very rich, thick, and creamy mouthfeel. Yum!

Let the zombies come. I’m ready.

This doesn’t really smell like much to me but there is some flavor there. The flavor is a little conflicting but it seems to work out in some strange way. I can taste the apricot hints but not really the caramel. Unless what I am tasting in the end sip which is a bit sugary but also a bit naturally-salty is that of the caramel…not sure. It’s semi-vegetal or grassy, too. It’s not bad! It’s different and in my book DIFFERENT certainly gets some extra brownie points! After sipping and sniffing and sniffing and sipping for a while I can smell a little of what I would say would be like a salt water taffy type aroma but it’s very subtle. As it cools at room temperature I am also finding the apricot comes out to play a little more. The faster the sip the more I like this. I am thinking I might like this better cold than hot. This one is interesting to say the least!

Braaaiiiiiiins….Braaaiiiiiiins. Okay maybe not quite, but I’m feeling pretty zombie-ish – who the heck gets a bad cold this late in the year, anyway?

I was looking for a green tea and this was the first one that came to hand. I could have sworn I reviewed this blend back when I first got it, but it looks like not. I still can’t smell terribly well right now but the flavour is nice – vanilla and caramel, and maybe if I tilt my head and squint I can pick up the fruity apricot notes as well. Of course my sense of taste might be off kilter as well, so I’ll give this tea an actual numerical rating once I’m feeling better.

Another sample from Kristin. I used about 3 tsp of leaves to 12 oz of water and steeped at 170 for two and a half minutes. I didn’t really get taffy flavor out of this, but the caramel came through a bit. I had high hopes that this would taste like Teavana’s Apricot Caramel Torte, because I had read a review that it was very similar, but seeing the leaves and flowers in this tea and no fruit pieces mixed in, I through that similarity out the window. I’m glad I did because this tea is completely different. I like it’s mild sweet taste. Not one I would rush out to order, but a decent cup of flavorful green tea.

Now, I don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea, but I want to be honest when I say that I don’t really know much about green tea because I don’t really like it that much. I keep trying, but I always end up leaving half my cup filled and abandoned with whatever green tea blend I try.

But that changed tonight.

I tried some Taffy Terror with a little bit of organic sugar and was completely floored! All I can taste is the taffy. Honestly, it’s almost creamy! Not a flavour I would expect from a green tea at all.

If you’re a green-tea-skeptic like me I would really recommend this!

There’s an incredible fragrance to this tea; sweet, malty and fruity. The appearance is very uniform with somewhat short segments.

The taste has a strong green tea base (which I think is required for a good flavored green tea) with notes of caramel and stone fruit. There’s also a sort of slick, creamy mouth feel to the tea which enhances the sense that it contains caramel.

On a later cup, I thought I’d try adding some agave sweetener. I thought its natural malt and toast flavor might really bring out the caramel. I was wrong. The sweetener totally ruined the cup. This tea is great by itself so leave a good thing alone :-)

I like this tea. It’s nice. But, it doesn’t seem to be exciting enough for me and I never find myself wanting to make it. So, I have a largely full tin sitting abandoned.

Last night, making a new pitcher of cold tea (that is standing in for water these days), I had an odd impulse to use this tea. And, actually, it’s not bad. The first sip is really odd and I get hit with that caramel, but it grows on me as I sip on it. It’s just a sweet, mild cool green tea.

This is delicious. It reminded me a bit of American Tea Room’s Extreme Vanilla. I wouldn’t say that I could taste any of the individual caramel or the apricot flavors, but more of just SWEET + green tea. Really very tasty!

Taffy Terror is ok, nice caramel blend. Not a tea I would drink everyday, but once in a while you need little caramel in your life!

Do you remember those little caramel squares you used to get Trick-or-Treating? Those are exactly what this tea smells like. It’s not until you taste the tea that you sense the apricot and green tea as well. I never would have thought of combining such different flavours, but they blend wonderfully together. This tea quickly became one of my candy substitutes. I should probably also mention that the packaging has cute ghosts on it.
