From DAVIDsTEA

If you like single-malt whisky and fine cigars, then this is the tea for you. Most say it was invented when soldiers took over a tea factory in Xingun (Star Village) during the Qing dynasty in China. When they finally left, the workers had to dry their tea in record time to sell it at the market. In desperation they lit open fires of pine to speed the process, and wood-smoked Lapsang Souchong was born.

Okay, so I seem to be out of luck when it comes to LS. The first time I tried it was in those prehistoric times when I was still drinking bagged teas exclusively. It was Twinings’ LS and I really liked it. Then I got a sampler tin of loose leaf Lapsang from Republic of Tea and I didn’t enjoy it very much at all. It seemed weaker and less flavorful than Twinings’.

This one… is kind of reminiscent of RoT’s. Although it has this extra to it in the form of an annoying aftertaste like… a cheap cigarette bitter stale aftertaste. I liked the smoky aroma of it, though! I really do like how Lapsang smells in general. But I do seem to have a problem with how it tastes. At least in the instance of this one.

I dunno. I think I’d rather really have a cigarette. Preferably not the cheap kind though.

I enjoyed this tea. I don’t think I could drink it all the time, but it definitely took me back to my travels to Tibet / Nepal. I could smell the roadside fires. Very transporting.

Okay so Adagio’s The Woman led me astray and made me think I might like a Lapsang Souchong. I do not, at least not this one. I think my craving for “smoke” was actually a craving for The Woman.

This smells smokier than it is and ultimately it is a bad black tea with more smoke in the smell than the taste. I might try combining this with some other, sweeter teas, in an attempt to drink it up. At least now I know.

women always lead me astray too. just sayin.

I was confused when I saw this in your cupboard, but it makes sense The Woman is to blame. I tried to stuff the little sample baggie full for you, though! :)

Haha. Thank you!! I was convinced I liked smokiness and honestly I think there is a chance I still do however this was not really smokey. It was mostly just shitty black tea.

I loved the inital smoky, campfire-y smell of this one! It’s definitely different than any other type of black tea I’ve tried, though I think the taste will have to become one I get used to. It might actually have a little too bold for my liking!

Seeing as this is a straight black tea, I was not expecting a huge flavor profile. It has a lovely black tea base and a strong and powerful hickory-smoked type of flavor. I would not say that it is overwhelming (considered that it is brewed properly), it is just strong, a good strong. I think that if it was more subtle, it would still be great!

Not for me. I like a good peat smoke scotch so I was thinking I’d like this tea but no go. Very strong smoked smell that is hard to get past. The actual tea tasted ok but I can’t get past the smell to enjoy it.

This is a tea you are going to love or hate. It as a smoky, campfire taste. Only drank half of it before i dumped it out…. i hated it. I know some people like this kind of tea, if you are one of those people you will enjoy this.

The smoky flavour was strong and intriguing, so I decided to try a cup of this today.

Honestly, when brewing, the smoky scent reminded me of bacon. …I never thought I’d find a tea that reminded me of bacon….

It is certainly a unique tea. I find the flavour a little better with milk, but it’s not a favourite of mine. I can imagine someone else really loving it, but smoky teas apparently aren’t [quite literally] my cup of tea.
