A charming and sweet blend with a powdery floral hint, holding light toasted notes.

Unusual. but not for me.

This was my very fitting drink of choice over the Easter holiday. It’s simple but perfect, truly like candied violets. It’s lost a bit of its favour over the past ten months but nothing too severe.

A sample from Ysaurella. While brewing, this one smells just like a parma violet! That unmistakable sweet, powdery, floral scent, that’s so reminiscent of childhood for me. I used 1 tsp of leaf, and gave it 4 minutes in 95 degree water.

Brewed, it TASTES just like a parma violet! I was hoping this would be the case, because it’s a flavour I absolutely adore. It’s one of those flavours that surprises me, because usually floral teas (or floral anything, really) aren’t my thing. This, however, is clearly the exception that proves the rule. It’s sweet, almost candy-ish, and very, very smooth, with a distinctive violet flavour and light generic-floral aftertaste. It’s a little powdery-tasting, very perfumey. It’s almost a scent as much as it’s a taste.

I’m pleased to say that I really love this. I’d hoped I would, and I’m glad that I actually do. Definitely one I’d add to my cupboard if the opportunity arose! In the meantime, I shall seek out more violet teas. Avidly.

Sipdown #16

Another DF sample courtesy of the ever generous JustJames!! As with Oolong Châtaigne, I found this tea very subtle, especially for a floral tea. There’s a faint whisper of violet flowers and black tea. But it’s like I drank the tea in a dream and once I woke up, I can’t recall exactly what it tasted like. I added a tiny bit of Truvia and that helped awaken the floral aspect.

Overall though, this is another one that is rather underwhelming. These teas are too subtle for my liking. I prefer them to sock me in the mouth with flavor. Where did that expression come from anyway? “Sock me in the mouth.” That’s pretty weird, isn’t it? Maybe someone was kidnapped once and they were forced to endure the pungency of a ripe, sweaty gym sock stuffed into their mouth to muffle their cries. You never know. That could be the correct origin. :P

Suffice it to say, my problem with DF teas is that they simply don’t stand up well to the test of time and environs. I do my best to store my teas under ideal conditions, but time is never on my side. These samples are from November. I guess that’s too long to wait and still expect grandeur, although the Butiki Teas’ sample held up perfectly fine.

Yes, another violet tea! This is the second I’ve tried, Kusmi’s being the first. Anyway, I got this in a trade with JustJames. Thanks, James!

This stuff is powerfully fragrant! My entire tea corner of the kitchen reeked of sweet, sweet flowers. I had to keep it out on top of the microwave so it wouldn’t contaminate my other teas. Goodness. It’s a lovely-looking tea. Tiny, fine black leaves mixed with little dried flowers – pale brown with a hint of the purple they used to be.

As it steeped, my kitchen started to smell purple. You know what I mean. Like some purple candy tastes, but not like artificial grape. When the tea was finished, a fully-formed violet flower had risen to the top and was floating on the surface of the dark brew. It smelled soothing and very, very floral. Upon tasting it, I see what James was talking about. The black tea base for this one is milder and less sharp than the one Kusmi uses. The flowers take the forefront, of course, in an exotic and spring-like way. Something about it also reminds me of hard candy.

If I make an order with Dammann Freres, this is something I’d definitely get again.

Awesome! I’m looking for a really good violet tea. This one just made it to my shopping list. :)

Stephanie

I made violet jelly a couple summers ago :)

Fjellrev

OMG that must have been amazing.

Tabby

Yum! Did you use fresh flowers or dried?

Stephanie

Fresh. My entire back yard is shady and covered in them! I waited till they were in full bloom and easily plucked a couple of quarts of them! You basically steep the fresh flowers like super strong tea, mix that bright purple liquid with sugar and pectin and then can it! I can post a link to the recipe if anyone is interested :)

TeaBrat

i’m skeered, lol

This tea sounds amazing!

OMGsrsly

Stephanie, that sounds amazing! I wonder if I can convince my parents to plant violets for me. :) (I have no outside space at my apartment!)

Tabby

Do you know what variety of violets they were, Stephanie? I live in the southeastern USA and all we have are Viola sororia, which don’t have any kind of scent.

Stephanie

Nope I sure don’t, Tabby. They grow like crazy here in Indiana though. The jelly did not have a super strong flavor in the end though. It’s really hard to describe! Based on my googling, I bet they were the same.
