From Chi of Tea

Farm fresh aroma with scents of Kahili ginger flowers, papaya and hawaiian blossoms. Makes a light yellow infusion with the taste comparable to jasmine and morning dew. Hand processed in small batches. Very rare treat. Grown on the Big Island of Hawaii at the Volcano Tea Garden.

Another old sample dug out from my tea cupboard. I’ve never tried a Hawaiian oolong before this – in fact I never knew Hawaii grew any tea at all. The fist steep (at 4 min) is rich and full bodied. It’s lightly sweet and slightly fruity with a hint of warm spiciness that reminds me a bit of ginger.

Subsequent steepings were lighter and a bit more woodsy/evergreen-tasting, but they still kept a hint of sweetness. It’s a unique and complex tea that I really enjoyed. Sadly my sample was only one cup’s worth and since Chi of Tea isn’t in operation anymore I’ll have to see if I can track down other sources.

Wow, I had no idea either. I figured they’d use as much room as they could to grow Kona coffee.

This tea smells great. It’s almost foresty. Once brewed, the deep golden liquor picks up a vague spiced scent, but upon tasting, it’s back to a foresty taste. It’s very nice and very smooth. There’s no bitterness. It’s a beautiful tea for all of the senses.

Wow! This is really good. It’s the first darker oolong I’ve been so drawn to. Dry it smelled like dry wood (actually it reminded me of my grandmother’s wicker furniture), and the liquor came out quite dark so I was worried. But it’s really clean-tasting, with a hint of floral. Astringent but not at all bitter. Really smooth and pleasant. Also, the huge leathery leaves are really cool!
