Thank you VariaTEA for sending this my way!

i got no chocolate? but i got a lovely creamy, vanilla-esque cinnamon bomb though! very nice. might have to look into this shop- next semester!

on a completely separate note, had to drop a line to my prof asking for more pages for an assignment….. i will cut and paste his reply:
‘… you should strike some balance between your school work and life.’ buwahahahahaha! yeah! if you promise me A+’s no matter what.

did he just obliquely accuse me of having no life? or would you call that direct? hmmm.

VariaTEA

I am glad you liked it. And yes, your prof may have accidentally (or perhaps not accidentally) accused you of not having a life.

JustJames

thank you so much for sending it! gotta love a prof that puts up with grading extra work and then calls it like he sees it…. politely! lol!!!
yours should be there soon i hope!

yyz

Maybe he’s a little envious. I remember some of my undergraduate profs (mostly department heads) complaining that 70% of their time was dedicated to finding funding/politics, 20% to their own research and grad students, and 10% to the classroom.

JustJames

well, he might be indulging me a bit because i appear to be the only tech savvy student willing to work with networking software for the NGOs, not just mine. also the fact that i have over 100 hours in and it should be more 36 and i’m trying to make it self-sustaining for after i leave as well. my classmates are just starting now, i’ve been at it full time for a month. (no sleep, lotsa tea…. that’s why no reviews!)

yyz

Goodness, with that amount of work in, it would be nice if you could at least get a tax receipt for your volunteer time. Sounds exciting, but don’t push yourself towards burnout!

JustJames

you say what i think…. and yet there’s no one else with my particular spray of skill sets: art, language, people, programs, photo editing with a strong real world network as well. it’ll be fine…. probably. lol.

yyz

Anyways I feel for you…

JustJames

thank you! xoxo…. are you enjoying your bits and pieces?

yyz

I am.. So far I have revisited Hepburn, and Toffee Dream, I was kind of too busy to give a tea proper attention today. I wm planning to explore something new tomorrow, looking forward to it!

JustJames

i’m crazy busy, if you don’t have time to review i’d be the last one to gripe. just thought i’d ask!! =0)

yyz

No harm in it, James they all look fabulous! I think I’m going to have to close my eyes and reach in, to decide where to begin. I’ve also been wasting time contemplating a Betjeman order.

JustJames

i did NOT just read that. i have enough tea… i have enough tea… i will not look them up online!! lol!

yyz

It’s a little bit more effort. To get decent shipping you have to do a phone order from Fouvrac in Montreal. They carry the full line, but don’t have a webstore. So you have to check out the teas at the Betjeman and Barton site. Shipping they said was cheap, someone had an order sent to California for $10.

yyz

Fouvrac seems to carry a lot of companies. They have Betjeman, and a lot of Kusmi, but I have also seen Fauchon, Compagnie Coloniale, and Marriage Frères tins in the pictures on their Facebook page.

VariaTEA

I saw Montreal and perked up. I suppose I have another store to check out now.

VariaTEA

Also this is a list (granted an incomplete one) of the tea companies they have: http://www.lefouvrac.com/grocery-product/en_tea.html

yyz

https://m.facebook.com/lefouvrac?id=220918191303544&_rdr. They have 2 locations. I’m not sure which is better but the Betjeman site lists the Fleury location. http://www.betjemanandbarton.com/en/content/9-world

They have really cute teaware as well!

VariaTEA

The other location is closer but realistically the difference is insignificant unless you are driving there.

JustJames

I AM COVERING MY EYES!!!!!! i am not reading! i have been SO well behaved. CURSES! lol.

yyz

Looks like you’re fine going to the Laurier location anyways. They apparently have an annex to the store dedicated to the Betjeman teas. http://voir.ca/voir-la-vie/art-de-vivre/2012/12/06/home-sweet-home/

VariaTEA

Yeah. Damn. I really shouldn’t be buying more. It is just so tempting though.

yyz

Beware, according to the fleury St description they carry 48 companies teas.

yyz

And it’s smaller than the Laurier one

VariaTEA

Hahaha. This could hurt my wallet. Perhaps I should avoid the store.

yyz

True, it does look dangerous. If you go set a limit, but it looks at least you can buy 50g.

yyz

James, we kind of hijacked this discussion, but you know when I finally get around to placing an order, some samples will be coming to you.

JustJames

ha ha ha ha…. hijack away! i am a man of mettle! i’ll misbehave- i just have to save it up for next semester is all =0)

OMGsrsly

Oh wow, yyz, that is a serious thing to consider! I could get a lot of things I’ve been wanting to try all with just one order. :D

Chai hunt continues – I’ve had some really good chai sent to me from other people lately. I’m going to stop buying chai, and just let others choose for me. :))
This one came courtesy of the very generous VariaTEA. Thank you so much.
I was a little concerned, there seemed to be A LOT of cinnamon in the package, and it smelled really heavy on the cinnamon.
I am happy to report, that while it is cinnamon heavy, it’s not over powering. This is light and sweet cinnamon, with some of the other spices coming through. I like this better than the other Camellia Sinensis chai that I bought.
This still isn’t perfect, but it’s a really nice light fun little chai. Thanks VariaTEA

JustJames

i know! smells one way, tastes another! very nice.

VariaTEA

I am glad you enjoyed it. It is pretty different from all the other chais I have tried so I thought I would share.

JustJames

i’m trying the zhena’s coconut right now =0)

VariaTEA

I hope you like it. Both OMGsrsly and Courtney sent some to me and it was not for me so when I saw it on your shopping list, I figured I would pass along what I had left. I figured it was better I send it to you so you could try it than for me to just drink it because it was there.

JustJames

=0) thank you!

VariaTEA

Your welcome :)

Dexter

I was drinking Zhena’s coconut chai earlier – it’s good – hope you like it James. :))

JustJames

it’s very nice… quite unique! i think i understeeped…. grrrr.

Most chais have been huge misses for me because I often find them too overspiced with one spice or another. When I brewed this, the cocoa that was prominent in the bag was definitely being overpowered by the smell of the spices. That made me worried. However, with my first sip, my fear subsided because this is one chocolate-y tea – more a fudgey, baked-good type chocolate than a milky, smooth chocolate bar. Of course, there is also a nice spice to this cup to really round out the flavors. All in all a nice chai.

JustJames

REALLY! dammit….. button click for shopping list…. grumble…. budget…. student…. dammit. ;oP

VariaTEA

haha I am sorry

JustJames

and now with the stupid kidney thing i am even further enabled tea-buying-wise and inversely DISabled financially if i follow through.

JustJames

no, it’s a good thing….. we know why it happened now, it just means i have to drink non stop to clear it up and make sure i keep my ph cranked to prevent it from happening again. yay tea! boo poverty, lol.

VariaTEA

Damn tea being so addictive and so costly at the same time.

JustJames

well, much better for us than coffee…. more culturally steeped than coffee too…. AND it helps dr who to regenerate!! does that mean i’m part time lord?

This sample came courtesy of the GCTTB – I love the name, it makes me think of the Transsiberian Orchestra… aaaaand now I’ve got their music running through my head. ;)

The smell of the tea is very cinnamon-heavy though that lightens up a bit in the flavour. There’s also this nice, fudgey chocolate flavour that I’m really liking. It reminds me of a Mexican chocolate brownie recipe I tried once that had dark chocolate flavoured with spices. Given the opportunity I was definitely buy more of this tea.

VariaTEA sent this to me labelled “just enough for one 12 oz cup”. So that’s what I’ve made!

Steeping, it smells SO GOOD. Many spices. Lots of spices. Spices, spices, spices. This is gonna be great with that whipping cream. :)

Yeah, this is seriously spice-heavy. I’m not sure if it’s supposed to be this way, as my sample was fairly powdered, but I kinda like it. Loads of cloves, some cinnamon. No chocolate. What? Chocolate nibs? I thought those were cardamom. Oops.

I still prefer my Mariage Freres Chandernagor, but this is still a nice chai. Different. And different is good!

Preparation
195 °F / 90 °C 4 min, 0 sec 12 OZ / 354 ML
VariaTEA

Different is definitely an apt description of this one.

Sipdown (193/195)!

So, I made the last of this in my timolino and drank it on the walk home. It started snowing! Like, fairly heavily. Boo! Fingers crossed it all melts by tomorrow. DEATH TO ALL THE SNOW.

Anyway; this was nice! It’s sweet and maybe a little more “chocolate” flavoured than the previous cup was – but mostly it’s the cloves I’m really ‘digging’ right now. Concluding thoughts: this will be a little missed, but I’m sure it’ll be short lived/soon forgotten – it was a good, solid gingerless chai and I loved that, but I don’t think it was special enough/unique enough to be remembered over the other chais I keep stocked.

Thanks VariaTEA for the Transylvanian Transsiberian Chai!

JustJames

this one is awesome.

VariaTEA

It is definitely one of the few chais I like but I don’t think it is one I will keep stocked either after I finish what I have. I think my future Camellia Sinensis orders will consist of Ombrelle de Papier and copious amounts of Des Roses et Des Bonbons.

OMGsrsly

Ombrelle de Papier was SO GOOD.

VariaTEA

It is one of my favorite white teas for sure. Weirdly enough, aside from mulberry white teas, all the whites I really enjoy are from local companies in Mtl.

Roswell Strange

Coughitsonmywishlistcough

VariaTEA

Haha, I shall share with you Roswell Strange, fear not.

JustJames

i have to look that one up…. never heard of it. brilliant name though……

VariaTEA

JustJames, I can probably send you a sample as well :). By the way, I think a postal worker has run off with the package you sent me since it still has not arrived :P.

JustJames

i know! what a dirty trick…. am i rebuilding your parcel and sending it off now?

VariaTEA

Haha thank you for the offer but you don’t have to do that. I have plenty of tea here already :)
