From Bitterleaf Teas

This year saw the Secret Garden change its home from an undisclosed stretch outside of Yiwu, with rising popularity and climbing prices, to a remote location in Manzhuan. The Secret Garden keeps no fixed address.

While our 2016 incarnation shares a similar profile with its predecessor in terms of a gentle approach and slight roughness, its most notable aspect is the presence of sweet fruit notes. This tea is initially nimble and sweet, but there is also a pleasant bitterness/kuwei that hides in the back, as well as a nice, lasting huigan.

Again, please note that this year’s Secret Garden is not the same tea as we provided in 2016. However, we feel that this tea still falls into a comparable class in terms of character, quality and mid-range value. Those who enjoyed 2016’s tea are likely to find this year’s equally enjoyable.

This tea has been lab tested for traces of 191 pesticides and is guaranteed to be under the European maximum residue limit. For a copy of the lab report and details, please contact us.

The secret is out, this tea is lit. After rinsing, I got aromatics of boysenberry / raspberry syrup, stewed stone fruit, hay and a briny minerality that reminded me of fresh seaweed. The body on this is unctuous right out the gate, as oolong drunk said – the broth is there on steep 2. There is a pleasant bitterness that slows you down and allows you to appreciate the lingering aromatics. In early steeps I get fruit & sweetness, but more in how it plays out in the aftertaste. There is a toasty, buttery pastry flavor that I associate with quality daily drinker greens from Korea, like Daejak. Also getting an enjoyable saline quality that I picked up in the nose in these early steeps. This tea gets progressively grassy / hay like as you move through the session. I got little spikes of green apple that came and went around steep 9. Hope to get a cake of this before it sells out <333

Great tea, pairs well with the common cold. A drink-now candidate for me.

The new Secret Garden is a fantastic tea thats complex and has a large array of tasting notes. I personally think it’s a step-up from last years Secret Garden because it’s more complex, full bodied, and all around heavenly. At first, the tea opened up to a broth that was sweet, fruity, and full bodied. The tea’s tasting notes kept progressing as it continuously transformed through out the entire session.
