From Andrews & Dunham Damn Fine Tea

Many have worn the crown but few have carried the freak flag of rock to such fantastic heights as Earl Grey. In spite of a seemingly endless procession of heirs and imitators, the Earl’s star shines as brightly today as it did on first rising in the early 1970s. Listeners who might have been baffled by his colorful affectations were instead delighted by the seductive, mysterious character of his songs. Surely his childhood exposure to folk music on a remote Mediterranean island contributed to his fresh sound, as did his travels in India, but his perfect blend of style, creativity and irresistible guitar hooks always seemed like the product of other-worldly origins. Wherever Earl Grey came from, he’s ours now and this true classic continues to surprise and delight us.

Earl Grey is a black tea scented with the oil of bergamot. Steep in boiling water for five minutes and enjoy in whatever manner you please.

I tried some of this yesterday to help get me out the door.

It’s a very solid Earl Grey, I think. The Bergamot is very nice and boldly citrusy though it left me with a bit of an aftertaste I couldn’t put my finger on. I quite enjoyed this with a tiny splash of milk.

Stupid tea.

I hadn’t really been very particular about earl grey until I tried this one. Now I seem to be on a mission to find a similar non-limited release grey.
This earl doesn’t hide the tea under the Bergamot flavor, and it’s not a citrus extravaganza, which for some reason I can only really enjoy on hot summer days (don’t ask why, I don’t know either).
For me I can get 2.5 steeps out of it, with the last .5 being drinkable depending on the alignment of the stars and some variation of the previous steeps that I’ve been unable to work out. It’s my relaxing mid-morning to early afternoon pick me-up and I’m going to be seriously miffed if I can’t find a replacement before A&D runs out.

The dry aroma is bergamot-central, and mixes enticingly with the black tea when steeped. Sips when the brew is extremely hot are not as rewarding, as the flavors seem to blossom when the tea cools slightly. If anything, the bergamot outshines the tea, and I crave a bit more “tea” flavor, although overall this mix is well balanced. Like most of the A&D teas, the linger is very pleasant, with no bitterness or harshness in the finish – as long as it isn’t allowed to cool too much. I don’t remove the tea while drinking, and while that can be dangerous with some, this is a tea that can handle over-soaking. Not too delicate, not too harsh – I’m a big fan of this one.

Just sipped the last of this tea down and am already missing this damn fine tea in my cupboard. Steepster gave me a non-caffeine related jolt when I visited this tea’s page and saw a huge ‘not available’ sign. Fortunately, I went to the official webpage and saw that the tea is alive, well, and able to be ordered. Steepster should be careful when claiming that teas are unavailable so that it does not induce heart attacks in its members unnecessarily.

The tea:

Other Earl Greys I’ve tried have either had a high, sour bergamot note or a strong acidic note. This one is beautifully balanced – it is ultra bergamoty without overpowering the smooth black tea underneath.

Quite a good brew! I didn’t steep it for as long as they said to, but it was pleasant and light after about 3 minutes and I liked it quite a bit.

Not too flowery, the bergamot is well balanced, and is definitely the finest Earl Grey I’ve had in a very long time.

The tea brews up a dark amber color. The smell of the tea is strong bergamot and honey (and maybe black pepper?). The taste is much more subdued than the aroma. A gentle citrusy sweetness with a touch of bitterness and very little astringency.

I love a good Earl Grey, and this is one of the best I’ve ever had. Smooth citrus accent that didn’t overpower, and the aroma!

The funny thing is, Earl Grey is what got me into a different level of tea (post teabag). I realized when I picked this up out of the sample bowl that I haven’t had one in months.

I liked it, although I’m not sure I like EG as much as I used to. I didn’t dislike it, but it didn’t elicit any MMMMM feelings from me. It was more of a utilitarian cup. And I don’t think it’s the tea, I think it’s me and my changing tastes. Interesting!

So yesterday we went to another board game thing. It’s an every Sunday afternoon thing, and we have met some nice people there. The people who run it are a married couple and very likable. Not the weird unwashed gamer stereotype. But, there is this other couple that is just weird. At our first interaction, the guy sat down and burped super loudly, and then he spent the whole game making inappropriate noises and doing gross things. Fine to see a couple of hours a week, but not really our preferred game partners at these events.

Yesterday we had 9 people, and had to split up into 4 and 5, and we ended up playing with the weird couple. Turns out the girl isn’t that weird. But the guy was sitting next to me and my skin was just crawling the whole time. ESPECIALLY when he took his fingernail, scratched inside of his ear (the ear next to me), and then scraped that nail off on one of his lower teeth. I. Just. About. Died. So there you go.

Cheri

It is interesting how our tastes change. It’s also a-okay to break up with Earl Grey if he’s not floating your boat anymore.

And UGH! Creepy weird guy sounds awful. My skin would be crawling, too, and I’ve hung out with a lot of those weird creepy people and have a high tolerance for it.

EEEEEEEEK! That made me shudder… And I know exactly what you mean by the “weird unwashed gamer stereotype”, ick. I used to work at a used game store and that was definitely part of our customer base.

I had a bergamot tea for the first time in a couple months on Saturday, and it made me remember that I do actually like some bergamot teas. I guess I just got a little overloaded on bergamot after I ordered the Kusmi Russian Blends pack. :P

Marzipan

I have nothing against gamers, don’t get me wrong – my husband and I met due to a video game. But this guy is really lacking in even basic social skills.

Stephanie

Oh man, yeah that sort of behavior is pretty hard to stomach. Ugh. Also I agree with you on EG…kinda bores me nowadays. Was this at the place on 1st Avenue?

Marzipan

Yes, same place. We have gone three weeks in a row but there isn’t one next weekend.

boychik

I think EG is for cooler weather. I have no cravings but I love EG in general

boychik

Ewwww, the guy is gross.

mj

The ear story was disgusting. Basic hygiene is a must, gamer or not!
