Andrews & Dunham recommend that the brewing of this black tea from India be performed by inserting the leaves into freshly boiled water for a duration of exactly four minutes. A hasty preparation will yield a pale and gutless liquor. A more prolonged duration invites bitterness.

I was looking for a classic black tea this morning and I couldn’t think of anything I wanted to reach for more than my tin of Thomas Sampson. The earthy, smokey, mineraly flavor is a perfect pick-me-up in the morning, and the dark color and smokey aroma add to the overall appeal. There’s also just enough bitterness to give the flavor some bite without overpowering the other flavors, and it lingers on your tongue and lets you savor the experience. Great stuff!
Truly, this is Damn Fine Tea.
That’s a damn fine tasting log. With so many people enjoying this series, I’ll definitely have to pick it up when it drops closer to 10 sets remaining.
Haha. Truthfully, I was ate oatmeal with my tea today, so I didn’t pay enough attention to give it a good tasting note. All I knew at the end was that it was really good tea! :)
I miss Thomas. My pantry is lonely without him. ::sniff::
The leaves for this black tea are twisted and curled roughly 1/16 inch in length and a brown-black hue with occasional lighter (as in whiter) leaves mixed in. I did not see any buds or stems.
The aroma is hayish with light toasty notes when dry and sweeter, like peaches after steeping. The liquor is a very dark amber and produced a malty aroma with peach notes and hints of honeysuckle.
On the palate though, the flavor is more subdued. There’s a minimal drying of the tongue and roof of the mouth. Some astringency and pucker finds its way into the mix with notes of peach and maybe nectarine and a malty texture in the finish.
I usually go for Chinese black teas in the morning (unless it’s chai) but out of the A&D Series Two showdown, I think I’d give the title belt to Thomas. I wish this had a little bit more natural sweetness, though I could see it as something that holds up well with a little milk and sugar.
Count me in, I am now in Thomas’ corner! Coppery-colored infusion with the cocoa-y, bake-y, malty flavors as others have described. Thomas arrives with a slow, smooth swagger, but leaves with a bit of a punch of astringent finish just to remind you that he was here. I look forward to spending time with him again!
