Earl Grey Moonlight

Sipped down my sample of this latte style.

Now when I was youngish, I read a book where the main character drinks a lot of earl grey. Having no idea what earl grey was, I imagined it to taste as a sort of creamy sweet ‘grey’ tasting drink. I don’t know why. It was a taste I invented in my head with absolutely no context, I don’t think I’d even tried tea at that point.

Now, while I’ve come to love earl grey for what is is, in latte form with a hearty amount of sugar, this tastes exactly how I imagined earl grey to taste like. Which is interesting. Maybe I’ll order this again sometime and try making some ‘milk tea’ out of it.

So I’ve had this sitting in my cupboard for a while now, and I thought I’d try it again and see if adding milk made me magically like it. Nope! Mind you for reasons that I can’t adequately explain to myself but which can probably be summarized by “I’m cheap,” I am still using the Almond Milk of Fail, so that probably didn’t help either.

I really should just toss out the rest of that almond milk.

This made me an Earl Grey convert and is my go-to, everyday brew lately.

OK OK OK it practically requires milk, which is usually a huge no-no with EGT. But the vanilla and cream teas somehow keep the bergamot oil from curdling the milk and melding the flavors all together deliciously.

Hands down – the easiest way to make a London Fog (inauthentic, but they are soooo yummy) at work or a lazy day at home when you’d rather spend the time knitting than fiddling with making vanilla syrup and frothing milk.

I’m liking this one! A lot! I didn’t think that I would rate an EGC this highly, but the cream aspect here is toned down considerably and there’s a nice licorice aftertaste that I adore. I do wish the bergamot had come through a little stronger, but otherwise this tea and I have no issues!

Update: Now that I’m mostly over that cold (and no longer on all the lovely cold medicine!) I’m not quite as effervescently enthusiastic about this one, but this is still a very enjoyable cup of tea! I continue to be weirded out about the creamless-cream flavoring in general (if it’s there, you should see it!) but when I compare this to the other EGCs I’ve tried (like the Della Terra) this one actually does allow the Earl Grey flavors to do more than just peek through. Without a doubt this is the best EGC I’ve tried, but I don’t think it will be a cupboard staple, or a finalist in my personal quest for the best Earl Grey.

Today is just an EARL GREY kinda day I guess. Tried this sample, from the sound of it I expected it to be similar to Zen Tea’s earl grey cream, but I think this one was less… creamy? Good taste though! And I could get a hint of cream in the aftertaste. Still delicious enough I didn’t feel the need to add milk, though I’m sure that would have tasted swell too.

I have had this sample kicking around for awhile, and apparently never remembered to add it to my Cupboard here, or review it. It stands up well to breakroom tea abuse (not optimal water temp, splenda, and room-temp plastic tub creamer). Not bitter, fairly mild. Probably better for a rainy afternoon than for a wake-me-up tea though.

The blue cornflower makes the unsteeped leaves quite pretty. I am not sure what it does for the taste, I’ll have to look that up someday.

Thanks to aisling of tea for sending me this one. The bergamot is not as strong as others that I have tried. A little bit a vanilla. This one was pretty good.

I got a sample of this, hoping to find a cheaper alternative to Teavana’s Earl Grey Creme. It’s def. not a replacement, but it does stand on its own as a great morning tea.

There isn’t the same level of creaminess I get from Teavana’s Earl Grey Creme, but (and I’m totally guessing here) there does seem to be a smoother bergamont flavor (I’m assuming that what I’m tasting is the bergamont anyway. Still learning!) than straight Earl Grey’s – which I like.

So, not a substitute (still looking, might just have to cave to The Man), but a tea worth drinking of its own accord!

I’m surprised by the reviews on this one! However, I am typically NOT an Earl Grey fan, and maybe that distinction yields my appeased tastebuds. Overall, I love the combination of creamy vanilla and citrusy bergamot. A friend of mine who adores Earl Grey can’t stand it – she says the medley is too unlike Earl Grey to take it seriously. And I think that’s why I like it! :) I also added a bit of Splenda (two packets) because the bergamot flavor was too strong for me at first.

Just used up the last of my sample tin….this blend absolutely shines with a bit of cream added.

Must order more!
