This wasn’t as pepperminty as I had hoped.

This is so yummy! The mint is strong—I steep it for no more than two minutes and find the balance between tea and cool sweet mintiness to be just about perfect. :)

I have the potential to be a big fan of flavoured black teas. Sometimes they’re a real let down, but there are a few gems like this one that are actually pretty good.

You open the tin to a strong scent of candy cane, almost as if you’d just unwrapped the real thing. Dry, you can clearly see peppermint leaves, pieces of candy cane (both large and tiny fragments), and a generous amount of black tea base. All good so far, and I’m reassured that the smell isn’t just artificial flavouring.

To taste, this tea is probably one of the most unusual I’ve tried so far. I can only describe it as vanilla-mint. The vanilla contributes a creamy sweetness, which is tempered by the slight coolness contributed by the mint. It’s almost like you made a cup of black tea, and then swirled a candy cane in it, but there’s a little more depth to the flavour than that. The scent isn’t quite as prominent as when dry, but it’s still noticable and identifiable. I drank this with a dash of milk, because that’s just my way, but I have a feeling it would be just as palatable, maybe more so, without. Maybe next time.

My only complaint would be that I’m not sure the black tea base is the best suited to this flavour. It’s ever so slightly bitter, and doesn’t quite sit as well as I hoped it would. Perhaps I’m looking for something slightly sweeter and less overpowering, to let the candy cane flavour sing, but that’s just my personal taste.

Ultimately, this is a pretty good flavoured black, and one I’ll definetly be drinking more of come the winter proper.

I’m not really getting any mint except as an aftertaste. I won’t buy this ever.

This tea is one of the strangest experiences I’ve had from Adagio. I got the holiday sampler pack in the little tins and while the tin is adorable I did lose a teaspoon full of tea trying to open it (my fault, but the tin lid spat tea everywhere!)

Admittedly this left me slightly grumpy. My doubts about this tea increased when I opened it to see, not chunks of candy cane like the reviews led me to believe, but tiny puddles of melted sugar with bits of black tea stuck to them. Strange, but the parcel had been left in the post room for a while – it was probably too warm in there and melted the sugar.

Then, I brewed the tea according to the directions on the tin. The smell was unbelievable, and not in a good way. Not at all like candy cane or any discernable black tea, more like melted butterscotch mixed with something bitter.

Ignoring my nostrils, I took a sip and immediately regretted my choices. This tea tastes of a bitter, astringent, cheap black tea mixed with chemical. No peppermint, no sweetness, just cheap flavouring. I gave this one to my husband who also pronounced it ‘undrinkable’, despite loving flavoured teas I’ve not been able to get on with.

I love their chestnut tea and I buy my daily drinking genmaicha from Adagio, so I found this extremely disappointing.

Adventaggedon Day Twenty – 2/6

I mean… this is basically the same as Brutalitea’s “Rock You Like A Candy Cane” blend. That’s not a bad thing, I enjoy that tea well enough. However, both blends have this thing that just scratches at my brain in an uncomfortable way – they taste fruity. Like, if you made a candy cane tea and then added in a teaspoon of grenadine. Why is it fruity?? Why?? Aside from that, it’s Candy Cane enough.

Also, we’re at day twenty and this is the first candy cane blend in all my advents!? I know I’m doing a lot of more straight tea oriented advents this year so that’s a large part of why there’ve been less festive blends – but I’ve definitely felt the absence. Glad Adagio is sneaking them in here at the last minute.

This has a strong peppermint while having a creamy sweetness to it as well. There is a little bitterness at the end of the sip and start of the finish. It leaves a cool sensation down my throat and into my stomach! It is very candy cane like, but I’m so-so on it overall. Steeped 3m @205

Adagio Advent Calendar – Day 22

Ooh, I like candy cane teas… I’m excited to see the most festive teas start coming out now that there are only three days left in my advent calendars.

Unfortunately, this base tea is really awful. It tastes like tannins and bitter disappointment… The fresh candy cane-like minty flavor is nice, and there’s even a bit of creamy vanilla here, but it’s ruined by the terrible black base.

Bah humbug!

Preparation

I remember having this one waaaaaaay back, and I had to drink it as a latte to smooth out the tannic base. The flavoring was strong enough to still pop through and it was actually okay that way. Okay enough to finish up a sampler bag.

“It tastes like tannins and bitter disappointment” haha! But also, ughhh.

Luckily mine was a one-cup deal, YAY! XD

Aw, this is where I believe Angry sources my FAVORITE candy cane tea… maybe this is a bad batch. :/

Good tea without milk, bad with milk. Would certainly buy again in 3oz, unless I ever happened to find an even better “candy” mint tea. This type of tea is a staple in my collection, but it is quite pointless to have multiple of this type.
