From Adagio Teas

Ooooh Darjeeling is a rare oolong tea from Darjeeling, India, where it is fairly uncommon to produce anything other than black tea. However, the growers of Singbulli Estate have produced this exquisite exception. Complex muscat grape and apricot pit aroma (also a characteristic of fine Darjeeling black teas, interestingly), tangy dried fruit flavor and deep floral notes that linger like any great oolong should are reminiscent of Oriental Beauty oolong. This Darjeeling oolong is a must-try for anyone seeking to learn more about tea on a deeper level: this is an exercise in the taste of ‘terroir’, the place where the tea is grown.

Ingredients: Oolong tea

Steeping Instructions: Steep at 212° for 3-4 minutes.

Every so often I’ll dive into a cuppa tea without reading into what I’m drinking, and I’ll make some pretty rash assumptions. This happened recently when I was brewing myself a cup of Adagio’s Ooooh Darjeeling. (Did I type all the “O”s?) During my first few brews of Ooooh Darjeeling, I thought to myself “Wow, this is a really nice black tea”. It wasn’t until I read the back of the bag that I realized it was actually oolong tea and not black tea.

A foolish mistake, and yet an easy one to make since Darjeeling tea is usually sold/marketed as black tea. Sometimes I’m such a noob when it comes to tea.

The scent of the leaves is delicate to me– slightly sweet and earthy, but I didn’t really taste either of these once brewed. Ooooh Darjeeling is unlike any oolong tea I’ve had. It doesn’t have that earthy aroma like most oolong teas I have tried. Instead, it tasted more like a black tea but not as strong and without much of the astringency (hence why I jumped to the conclusion that this was a black tea). Ooooh Darjeeling had a subtle floral aroma that I found to be delightful. I think there was supposed to be some fruity aromas as well, but I did not pick up on those.

This tea tastes great both unsweetened and sweet. While I haven’t tried it, I think Ooooh Darjeeling would make a nice iced tea if rock sugar were added (or whatever your sweetener of choice is).

Bottom Line, I really enjoyed this tea! It’s not a breakfast brew for me since I prefer bolder tastes in the morning. But, it’s the perfect cup to enjoy while reading books on a sunny afternoon.

Super temperamental, not sure if its inconsistency with batches or my brewing or a combination (had lots of variances in smell and taste batch to batch with other teas from adagio in the past) . Nothing special, plain and simple, gong fu pretty well surprisingly and 120% in need of a rinse very prone to going bitter super quick. Make sure to let fanning/dustings to pour of with the rinse and I might even do two. Once I treated it like a bai hao (Infusions as quick as possible and water as hot as possible) it actually yielded a much better cup and fairly fruity as well. I feel like im chasing the dragon with this one though, the first time it brewed an amazing sample tasted like a dancong on steroids(super peachy, apricoty, sweet, floral) so then ended up buying a bunch because it was my new favorite(more than I care to admit) and now at best with a lot of time and effort, its a sub par fruit darjeeling profile.

I call it “Tuition” tea. Teas like this are the price we pay to learn about good tea. I have a lot of “tuition” tea also, but hey it’s part of the learning curve :) .

This is super tasty! I am new to tea, and don’t describe them with much detail, but this one so far stands out to me. Nutty, a tad spicy, and a bit fruity. I prefer it warm.

For an oolong, this is pretty good. I normally drink tea with milk and honey, but I omitted the milk this time and it turned out pretty good.

So far so good. The first steep is an interesting blend of an early picked oolong with all of the aromatic of a quality darjeeling black. A 30 second steep yielded a lot of flavor and a light golden color. Not my favorite oolong ever, but I will definitely drink it again. Well done for the first oolong from Darjeeling.
