There really aren’t enough words to convey how much I love this tea—it’s everything I ever wanted out of a chocolate tea and then some. The combination of quilan oolong, hojicha, and chicory is brilliant—it gives the tea a nice roasted flavor with a tinge of bitterness on the back of the tongue, just like good quality dark chocolate. It really hits all of the right notes for me and then comes the sweet cherry flavor. This tea reminds me of the chocolate covered cherries my grandma bought every Christmas throughout my childhood. I have such fond memories of them and it was always such a treat when she would share a bite with us. Those cordial cherries from Queen Anne were her favorite (and I wouldn’t have blamed her if she had decided to hoard the entire box, those things are delicious.) This is hands down the most realistically flavored chocolate tea I’ve come across. Lauren at A Quarter to Tea really is a talented tea blender, I can’t wait to see what new flavors she dreams up next.

Thank you Sil for the chance to experiment more with this awesome tea. Unfortunately when I made this I forgot the “latte” in the title represented the coffee beans in the mix as opposed to acting as a prep suggestion. Maybe not the best thing to be having when tomorrow I start back at school which means early mornings again but it should be okay.

Nonetheless, I brewed this as a latte (5 mins at 190, which definitely was too long) and I’m getting mostly oolong and coffee. In the middle of the sip I can pick up some chocolate trying to fight its way through but the other flavors are just drowning it out. And cherry…where are you, cherry? I know you’re in there but I can’t taste you at all. Tbh, I could see this being awesome but I just overdid it with the brewing time. I think I’ll try an iced latte with what I have left.

Once again, thank you Sil for sharing and being so generous with your tea!

Sil

It never tasted as amazing as the sample I got from dexter

VariaTEA

I wonder if it maybe has to do with what ends up in the cup. Mine had a lot of coffee beans which could explain the heavy coffee flavor.

Dexter

Interesting – in my world 5 minutes would not have been long enough for this one.
I totally agree that it depends on what bits end up in your cup – it’s a little different every time I drink it. I also agree with Sil, the first batch of this I got was AMAZING – the next batch was really good but not as good as the first – that might also have something to do with what bits end up in your bag, or how long it had been blended.
IMHO – this is better hot steeped and then cooled for iced latte than cold steeped but ymmv. :)

This is not a tea I ever would have chosen for myself, because “latte” makes me think coffee, and tea and coffee should remain separate drinks.

But OMG. Thanks so much for sending me some, Dexter! It’s SO GOOD. The cherry flavour is amazing. It really tastes like those cherry candies that ooze cherry syrup when you bite into them. The expensive ones, though, not the waxy $2/box ones you sometimes find at Christmas.

Yum!

Dexter

YAY!!! So happy that you liked it. :))

OMGsrsly

I’m totally second steeping this now. :) I rarely do that, I hope it works out!

Dexter

Milder but yep you should get a second steep – don’t be afraid to add a couple minutes on the second.

OMGsrsly

I did and it was also delicious. OM NOM NOM. And I have a little left for a smaller cup tomorrow. :)

I’m not a fan of coffee, but all the raving tasting notes convinced me to order a sample of this one with my recent AQTT order. I can see why others enjoy this one so much: the base is a high-quality silky-smooth roasted oolong and the flavoring is subtle and well-balanced (mostly cherry with hints of dark chocolate and coffee coming through at the end of the sip). But personally, I would love it a lot more without the lingering bitterness of the chicory.

Sipdown. For a very old tea, unfortunately a shadow of what it once was. Faint berry with a faint chocolate roasted note. Not a tea well served by time.

tea-sipper

This will be the tea I most miss from AQTT. I wish it aged better.

So the throngs at the tea festival became far too much for me.

I had had so much fun with the most lovely Steepsterites that I completely forgot that this morning I had dropped my laptop on my big toe. Just seconds after leaving the tea festival, flames of pain and sudden awareness of massive swelling accompanied me on the elevator ride to the main floor. Profound discomfort.

I’ve been on the couch with foot elevated since I got home, trying to ignore my throbbing foot which has now swollen to what feels like the size of a melon.

Today this tea is far less cheery than I remember it being despite having a cherry in my dry leaf. Still delicious, but I want more cherry. Especially today.

Why yes, I am whining, why do you ask?

Indigobloom

Oh nos! got any traumeel around to help with the swelling? Feel better soon Evol! as in asap so we can chat more tomorrow! :D

Kaylee

Aww! Wishing you a swift recovery!

mrmopar

Hope you get better soon! I broke my leg a couple of weeks ago and my hard headed self went a week before I went to get it fixed!

Evol Ving Ness

Oh dear with the leg! I hope you are on the mend now. Thank you everyone!
I had some arnica cream handy, so I slathered that on and I am just heading out now after a few sips of one of the teas I bought yesterday. As long as I can get my shoe on my foot, I am on my way.

Fjellrev

Oh no, hope it’ll heal soon. And same to you, mrmopar!

tigress_al

Well wishes to both of you!

Evol Ving Ness

Thank you! I was able to get around, so things may be better than I thought. I won’t be jumping around on that foot any time soon though.

i finished this one today. i want moaaaaar. decisions, decisions…just under 10 more hours to decide before hiatus sets in. bwahahaha love this tea!

Evol Ving Ness

Oh, the not-buying-tea-savings-plan begins after ten whole hours? I did actually come across a Canadian tea site and thought oh, what harm can it possibly do to have a look? And then, I began to fill up the cart. But thankfully, I managed to walk away. I walked away! Yay me! :)

I think you should order this one. It is so very delicious. And you have ten whole hours of reprieve, after all.

Sil

haha i just did it. but i did manage to get my cart down from 15 items to 4. lol so uh..baby steps? :)

Evol Ving Ness

Did you get all the sets of teas? :) :)

Evol Ving Ness

From 15 to 4! Now that is an accomplishment. I rarely manage to have that kind of resilience. Hurray for baby steps! More than baby steps, actually. Very well done.

If it doesn’t reduce your joy, can I ask which ones were the four that you managed to whittle down to? Only if it doesn’t reduce the thrill of the shop though. If it does, by even one iota, ignore, please.

And as much as I adore, QTT, I really truly hope that Lauren is changing her packaging really really soon. In my last order, there was far too much cross-contamination. However, that said, I had asked Lauren to delay shipping my teas, so they were likely hanging out sealed for far longer than was good for them.

Lauren | A Quarter to Tea

Sil, I’m running a New Year’s sale starting tonight, so I took the liberty of refunding the difference on your order so you get the sale, in spite of the hiatus :p

Shipping is changing this coming year to a thicker mylar zip bag! Im also getting a thicker packaging material for samplers. I’ll actually have a post up in the forums with the flavor of the week with some other changes in about 30 minutes or so :D

Sil

@evol – i picked up the chocolate sampler (1 item, 3 teas hahaha); vanilla pears with cardamom butter; caramel keemun; and an extra ounce of chocolate cherry. there are a number of others i wanted (ie have tried and enjoyed) but i’ll wait. use it as incentive to drink up! and yes, i agree on the packaging.

@lauren – thanks SO much! I really appreciate that! oh man flavour of the week better not be amazing.. lol

Evol Ving Ness Hurray, Mad Hatter! Hurray! I am delighted to hear this. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Evol Ving Ness

Erm, yeah, the chocolate sampler is hard to resist. As are most of Lauren’s teas. Good selection there, Sil. Hmm, I wonder whether my cc will cooperate before the not-buying-tea-savings-plan begins?

Evol Ving Ness

I am drinking Chocolate Cherry Latte now in solidarity.

Sil

yaaaay! also it’s been 29 minutes…. must know what new flavour is.

Sil

oh i might be safe…if it’s Cranberry Maragarita Yerba Mate Tea. mate and i don’t get along.

OMGsrsly

Oh, but cranberry margarita sounds great! If only it weren’t mate. Haha. :)

Lauren | A Quarter to Tea

You guys are really making me want to make the green tea version of this I had orginally envisioned D:

Sil

haha cranberry marguerita sounds lovely, just not as a mate. though to be fair i am typically on the side of wanting all blends to be black blends, rooibos or puerh…. sooo take that for what it’s worth lol

OMGsrsly

(I’m with Sil! Black tea ALL THE WAY. Rooibos is nice sometimes. And I like puerh.)

Evol Ving Ness

^ and ^^

I support.

Sil

poor lauren, we’ll be twisting her arm to make all sorts of black, puerh, rooibos blends!

Lauren | A Quarter to Tea

I’m always open to ideas, so if there’s ever anything you really want to see definitely let me know!

Evol Ving Ness

^^ I support that too.

That said, however, your oolong and houjichas are very awesome too.

Sil

things to ponder…what do we want lauren to try making heh

Evol Ving Ness

Moratorium on tea prevents me from pondering the possibilities. At the moment. Give me three months or so.

ok, ok, if I must. That Vanilla Apple Panna Cotta Oolong was so divinely good that I could see Lauren doing a fine job of some sort of zabaglione. Or tiramisu. Or dulce de leche flan. Or Portuguese custard tarts. Or profiteroles. Off the top of my head.

Or caramel something. Or since I am on a strawberry thing, strawberry custard tarts. Or the tea equivalent of this. http://zsuzsaisinthekitchen.blogspot.ca/2011/04/hungarian-custard-slice-kremes_16.html

Sipdown! Down to 57 teas, although my 250g of DAVIDs Banana Split just came in yesterday, so I’m sure I have more tea in weight now than I did when I was at 70. Constant struggle!

This is very tasty. Love the roastiness and coffee note. I didn’t run into any dried cherries in any stores that I would have liked to have added to these last couple cups but oh well. This would be the perfect tea ever if it had more cherry in it, in my opinion. Still fantastic, though.

VariaTEA

57! That’s amazing!!

VariaTEA

Though the weight thing is rather daunting to think about. I think when my cupboard gets lower I may weigh it but at over 150 teas, I am a bit afraid to.

Evol Ving Ness

57! Hurray!

I got this as a bonus sample in my order. It wasn’t something I’d order as I see coffee and run.

However, this blend is hella smooth – the roasty oolong and chicory are great, the milky chocolate smooth it out, and there’s a bit of cherry in there. The majority of the taste is the oolong base. It’s got a bit of coffee aftertaste but it’s light. Very nice blend, I could be convinced to purchase it. Evil are these bonus samples!

Hooray, my sampler from Quarter to Tea came in. Even through the plastic, all the samples smell delicious.

First up, Chocolate Cherry Latte Oolong. When I first read the description of this, I didn’t really think it sounded like something I would like. But I was swayed enough by all the Steepster enthusiasm to want to try it anyway. And now that I have, I can see why it’s so popular. Coffee is the strongest note I pick up, and then the sweet smokiness of the houjicha. I get a little chocolate, but this time around at least, I’m not picking up on the cherry. Maybe I should have let it steep a little longer.

That said, I think my first thought was right, this isn’t really something I would stock, as coffee flavor just isn’t something I crave in my teacup. The day I want something that tastes like coffee, I will just drink coffee.

I still appreciate the originality that went into this though (as well as the quality ingredients) and I don’t think I’ll have any trouble finishing this off. Really looking forward to trying the other samples!

p.s. I ate the dried cherry out of this when I was done steeping, and it was delicious :)
