The Tea of the Week for September 9, 2019!

This is SO good! So good, in fact, that the first AND second time I tasted it, I wasn’t able to write this description because what I was tasting defied description! I had a difficult time nailing down just exactly what I was trying. I’m sure it had a little bit to do with the fact that a lot has been going on lately so I wasn’t able to get my mind in the right place – but when I would sit at my computer, ready to compose a description, I found myself without words . . . & those that know me know that it isn’t often that I’m at a loss for words.

This amazing blend starts with a Gao Yan Fujian black tea. Usually when I think of Fujian, I think if a tea with strong chocolate-y tones. I love that in a Fujian black tea – but this Gao Yan is unique – rather than a chocolate-y tone, it has a sweet raw sugar profile with notes of stone fruit. When I first tried it, it reminded me of a sweet, tree-ripened black plum that’s been sprinkled with a little turbinado sugar & then bruleed! Yeah – yum!

I knew I wanted to do something with this tea – but I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do because the tea itself was so phenomenal – I didn’t want to mess with an already good thing, you know? So what I decided to do is work with it’s natural flavors – to enhance what it’s already got going on to make it even better.

To the Gao Yan, I added some maple essence to play upon the natural raw sugar notes. Then I added some plums to play to the natural plum-y notes. I added some Sri Lankan cinnamon & some walnut essence (don’t worry, it’s nut-free!) for some depth & warmth. Then I added just a teensy bit of Lapsang Souchong for a warm, roasty-toasty flavor.

The result is astonishing. I’ve never actually had a “maple roasted plum” but this is what I’d imagine something like that tasting. The black tea offers a nice, rich background of flavor. There’s a well-defined maple note, a hint of smoke, juicy plum notes, nutty walnut tones & warm, sweet spice from the cinnamon. It’s really quite a delight to sip.

Oh, and it IS organic, VEGAN, gluten-free & allergen-free (no nuts!)

Delicious! So roasty, mapley, and with a bit of plum. Really enjoying this tonight, and only sipping it down as I have a second packet squirrelled away. I wonder what the base is here – it tastes like it must be something unique because I can’t imagine the roasted, almost smoky notes being from a flavouring.

The base is a Gao Yan Fujian black tea with just a teensy bit of Lapsang Souchong added for a hint of roasted & smoky notes.

Ah! Of course it’s lapsang for that smokiness. I should have guessed, but I think it was just so balanced that it didn’t cross my mind. The lapsang made itself known in the second infusion, though, probably because of a slightly longer steep + less flavouring.

Another day, another brew!

So, I didn’t actually order this one (I don’t think), but the kind “Mad Tea Artist” was nice enough to send it to me as part of my order. Isn’t she wonderful??

Scent in the bag is very sweet. Super sweet actually. I wonder if it will translate over?

Brewed with Keurig water for 3 mins, 2tsp/16 oz

Taste is…wow, that’s surprisingly good, especially for no sweetener! I’m not going to say it is sweet, so to speak (at least not by my sugar-loving standards) but it is very tasty. I really do get the maple flavor from it.

OK Edit: I don’t know if the metalic taste I’m getting is a water problem or my mouth problem, because, while I’m not using bottled water, I still taste it even when not drinking the water. I had some dental work done recently, so that may be part of the problem, I don’t know. I will try to review it objectively outside of this.

So, with sweetener, this is a strong maple flavored tea. I haven’t eaten a plum in ages, so I can’t compare it to that, but the maple flavor alone is delightful. There’s also the ever so slightest smoke flavor. I realize now this has Lapsang in it, which would have been a dealbreaker if I hadn’t tried it first. Now I’m starting to think that I could actually enjoy LS if it is GOOD LS. This is just a very pleasing tea. I’m enjoying it.

There was a time when I was absolutely, positively opposed to Lapsang Souchong. I hated it so much that I refused to have it in my house because I could not stand it. However, when I became a “professional” tea reviewer, I kinda had to get to a point where I would at least try lapsang souchong if it was sent to me to review, you know? So, after doing a “rinse” of the tea, I find that no longer hate it on it’s own, although I do prefer less smoky teas. And I actually quite enjoy a smoked tea as part of a blend – which is the case here. :)

Yeah, my only exposure to straight Lapsang Souchong is Adagio. It was pretty much the worst thing I ever tasted. I have since learned that even people who swear by LS hate the Adagio one, so I really think I need to try other options. This was really good, and I enjoyed the smokey note. Thanks for sending it!

For me, the time I tried Lapsang Souchong, I got a blistering migraine and never touched the stuff again. Smoke of any sort in the air is a migraine trigger for me, and apparently my head just associated the strong smoke aroma coming off the cup and triggered the migraine even though it wasn’t “real smoke” (ergo, a lack of oxygenation in the air that would actually cause a migraine). So I’ve had a strong aversion to the stuff (to be fair, strong smoke flavors aren’t really my thing anyway). But I loved this tea, too, so it seems if it’s a very small amount of Lapsang used in a blend, so a large “smoky smell” isn’t wafting off the cup, then my head is okay with it.

This is the second tea for my advent, and if y’all are confused… I have the biggest banana aversion ever. If the scent of banana got on any of my other teas I’d actually have to toss my other teas, it is that strong for me. I can’t even watch another person eat a banana without my gag reflex going off. A banana peel left in a breakroom garbage can is just like, the worst thing for me. I have no idea where this came from for me, but there you have it. Anne was really sweet and swapped out the nanner for me this year with this tea, which smells amazing!

Thankfully the smokiness is only coming out on my tongue and not in the aroma (I sometimes have issues with my head with a strong smoky aroma and tend to avoid smoked lapsangs as a result, so it must be a very subtle touch). I’m getting more of a glazed BBQ impression, a hint of sweet molasses/maple and liquid smoke at the back of the tongue. I’m not sure if I’m getting a distinct plum note but this is a more fruity Chinese black — I’m getting a strong raisin impression, with a hint of maltiness. This is really hitting the spot as a breakfast tea this morning — smooth, sweet, slightly smoky, and oh-so-satisfying.

Forgot that while I love 52 teas plum flavouring, I’m not a huge fan of maple teas. It doesn’t ruin teas for me, but it always tastes wrong to me. Lol. Maple flavour in teas is not even sort of maple syrup flavour to me.

Another tea from last month. This tea is so good. This morning, I’m able to taste more of the smoky/roasted notes from the Lapsang Souchong, and I like the way this plays with the plum-y flavor as well as the maple and cinnamon notes. As I continue to sip, the roasted flavors start to meld with the other flavors to create a very harmonious taste.

It’s really wonderful: It’s sweet, it’s savory, it has a really nice depth of flavor to it. Perfect for autumn.

This is the most unusual tea. The dry leaf aroma is overwhelmingly strong – and it smells nothing like tea at all. It smells as I would imagine smelled that little bastion near La Rochelle in where the daring musketeers feasted and leisurely shot at advancing troops. Gunpowder, decaying branches, grass, saddle leather, savory dishes and a whiff of sweet deserts.

The actual taste of the tea is less exotic but nevertheless deeply pleasing. Fresh ripe plums dominate, but there is enough of a good red tea and the calendula weirdness. It is strong, charming and lasting.

I am glad that I tried this one.
