Tea of the Week for June 10, 2019!

I’ve been envisioning myself creating a Plum Zabaglione Assam for at least a year, possibly more. I wasn’t sure when I’d actually get around to blending it, but I knew that I wanted to do it . . . eventually. When my latest shipment of Chinese teas arrived a few weeks ago – and I sampled this new harvest of Wild Arbor Assamica from the JIngmai mountain in the Yunnan Province, it revived my interest in the Plum Zabaglione because the big fruity notes of this tea are quite plum-ish and I knew that it would play really well with my plans for a yummy plum zabaglione.

Mmm! This is really very nice. The black tea is bold – as you might expect from the leaves of an Assamica – but not quite as astringent as you might find the teas grown in Assam. Some maltiness that works nicely with the rich, creamy custard-y flavors of the Zabaglione.

And as for the two flavors of plum and zabaglione – I just love this combination! The plum seems to draw the wine-ish tones within the layers of the zabaglione. Everything is beautifully harmonious.

This is pure Assamica, blended with slivers of dried organic Angelino plums (processed with no preservatives!) & a hint of freshly shaved nutmeg along with just the right touch of zabaglione essence. I also added some calendula and amaranth petals for a little pizzazz. It’s gluten-free, allergen-free & VEGAN! But one thing it isn’t is plentiful! I didn’t make a bunch of this because I have a limited quantity of the Wild Arbor Assamica and I had other plans for the tea as well – so grab some while it’s here because it will be a while before I’m able to reblend this one!

ingredients: black tea, organic plums, organic nutmeg, organic petals (calendula & amaranth) & organic natural flavors

Wow ok. I had an absolutely fantastic cup of this yesterday – I might have guessed that the base was oolong, although that might be because the tea reminded me a lot of one of Butiki’s plum teas? Either way – this was really delicious. I could really taste the plum, and a nice creaminess. I’m not sure if I picked up on the nutmeg, but it probably contributed to the flavour. I’m sad this tea doesn’t have better reviews!

I missed out on this one, but I loved the Maple Roasted Plum tea!

Kittenna

I think I did too! Mmm, plum.

Sil’s husband will be coming by at some point today to do our usual exchange of teas so I figured now was as good a time as any to drink this sample I received in our last swap. I don’t usually eat plums but as a flavor, it is usually appealing. I also am intrigued by zabaglione since its a dessert flavor, but I don’t think I ever had one. So, I can’t say if this is accurate or not to either flavor since I have not had either much. I can say its a nice tea. The base comes through smooth and malty and a bit bready. The other flavor I am getting is the plum, or at least stone fruit. Thank you Sil for the share. I enjoyed this sample a lot but I don’t know how often I would reach for a plum tea that would justify purchasing more. With that said, for people who are bigger plum fans, this is a great option.

Lol. Huuuuuuuge bunny!

Just polished off this taster from my mystery grab bag. I had another zabaglione tea from 52Teas that I remember being pretty amazing (I think it was raspberry?), but this one was just so-so. I got notes of plum and nutmeg, but none of that creamy custard flavor I was expecting.

When this tea was hot, it tasted kind of like weak nothing. As it cooled, I could taste the fruit flavors a little over the mild black tea. I do wish that the fruit flavors could be stronger though. They were much too faint in every cup of this I had. Oh well.

Just a little less than a teaspoon of this one left, so it’s off to variaTEA for her to try. I’ve enjoyed this one but not in the way I usually enjoy plum teas from 52 teas. Not sure what it is this time around. So not sad to see it be finished up. A decent enough cup but nothing to write home about.

My cold-brewed iced tea for today is our tea of the week for June 10: Plum Zabaglione Assamica. For this blend, I started with a wild, Yunnan grown Assamica and added plums, zabaglione essence & nutmeg (along with some flower petals for some pretty). This one is wonderful hot (I wrote my blog feature on this tea about my experience with the hot cup – you can read that here: https://www.52teas.com/blog/tea-of-the-week-for-june-10-2019-plum-zabaglione-assamica-black-tea/ ) but I think I like it even better cold-brewed.

The Assamica used has a natural stone-fruit flavor to it – which is why I chose it for this blend. When I sampled it, I knew it would work beautifully for this blend (that I have been wanting to blend for a while now but was waiting for the right base).

Anyway, I don’t want to go all wordy on you here – I just finished my third glass of this. It’s amazingly good. The plum comes through clearly, the creamy zabaglione adds a nice sweetness/creaminess to it, and I can even taste that hint of wine from the zabaglione. The nutmeg is subtle but adds a nice, warm contrast to the other flavors. It all works together very well.

Oooh, sounds reminiscent of the Dirigible Plum Pudding blend. Now I am so curious to try it.

52Teas

The Dirigible Plum Pudding is a similar blend, the Bu Lang base was a little more substantial, I think – and if I recall correctly (even though it was less than a year ago, the Dirigible Plum is one that I drank up rather quickly so I don’t have something to compare it to side by side) the pudding was a bit creamier (and more custard-like) than this is. But the Dirigible Plum Pudding was definitely inspired by my original plan to create a Plum Zabaglione tea at some point but I was waiting for the right base for it.

Kittenna

This sounds yummy, although I probably wish it was creamier than Dirigible Plum Pudding!

52Teas

I think that this one is more plum than creamy versus the Dirigible Plum, which I wanted to be more of a pudding than plum. Both have nutmeg – I guess that should speak of my love for nutmeg. :)
