From 52teas

This is a delicious shou mei white tea with rich organic buttercream and toffee flavors and some buttery yellow marigold petals for color.

Thank you Kittenna for sharing this with me. It was one I was interested in picking up and so it is nice to see if I made a mistake by passing on it. I was a little hesitant because not all the reviews were so positive so when I took a sip and could vaguely pick up notes of buttercream, I was pleasantly surprised. I found no toffee in this and I definitely would have been happier with a bit more flavoring but at the end of the day, it was pretty good so I was certainly pleased with my sample.

I’m drinking a cup of this now. (Not a backlog! But more of those will come later today.)

I read through the other comments that others had with this tea and I’m a little surprised by the negative comments, because I’m enjoying this. I can taste the toffee and the buttercream frosting notes as well as the white tea.

I steeped this in my breville. I don’t usually steep white teas in my breville but I was feeling lazy and didn’t want to wait around for the water to heat to pour it into my teapot so I just went with the breville. I used 3 bamboo scoops of tea, 500ml of water, 4 minutes steep time at 170°F and I’m loving this.

Sweet, creamy, and yummy.

Even my youngest daughter is enjoying this. She took a sip and said, Mmm… this is GOOD.

CHAroma

It’s definitely enjoyable, just not what I expected at all.

I’ve had a really crappy day. I decided I needed some tea. I made this one. It’s very underwhelming. The dry leaf aroma is weird. Strong and weird.

The brewed tea aroma is reminiscent of butterscotch but just barely. The flavor is white tea. Umm, where’s the flavoring? There’s maybe a tiny hint of something like a cross between butterscotch and buttercream frosting. But it’s very light and there’s no toffee to speak of. This is probably 95% white tea and 5% flavoring. Boo.

Maybe my sour mood is making me overly negative about this tea or maybe I’m describing it perfectly. I can enjoy it as a white tea, but nothing more than that. Add this to the laundry list of bad things going on for me right now. *Sigh. As a white tea, I’d rate it about 78. As a flavored white tea, I’d rate it about 40. So average the two and that’s how I got to this rating.

I just brewed this today and I used the same temperature as you but steeped it 2 minutes longer. I have a really good flavor with mine. I’m sorry that you had a poor experience with yours. :(

Kittenna

Hmm. I’ll have to try brewing mine a bit longer. I also didn’t get much flavour. Sigh.

CHAroma

Hmm, I tried it again today with a 4 minute infusion. It still mostly tastes like white tea to me. The flavoring is definitely stronger now but it also doesn’t taste like buttercream icing or toffee (IMO). It tastes vaguely sweet and otherwise unidentifiable.

Also not as enamoured by this tea as I had hoped. Couldn’t really detect the buttercream/toffee notes, and I believe I caught a whiff of play-dough-iness from the tea, which I’ve previously attributed either to the tea base being old/poor quality, or to a flavouring component. It didn’t translate into the flavour, thankfully, but was a bit off-putting. Again, though, another attempt is warranted to try and coax out some more delicious flavour.

VariaTEA

I am glad I didn’t invest in a pouch of this one given your review. I certainly thought about it though because it sounds delicious.

Sil

no. stop it. both of you.

Kittenna

I am sads. It sounded so good.

VariaTEA

They always sound good and they never are. Alas, heartbreak is inevitable with each order.

I just started getting the subscription for 52Teas, now that the packages are smaller, and if I don’t care for something, the money spent on it isn’t as large as it was before.

I do like this tea. I think it is missing some contrast between the light, sweet white tea and the flavors. The buttercream comes through very, very well, as it is a different flavor other than SWEET. A black base would have overpowered the flavors, and so I think the white base is appropriate for this tea. I might have gotten some toffee flavor, but this tastes just like buttercream frosting to me.
