Our Tea of the Week for the Week of
September 23, 2013

We’re a little late this week, but with good reason. Every once in a while we get a suggestion from a customer that’s just so full of awesome that I have to kind of put aside some of my other plans and work up a suggested blend. This is one of those weeks.

Our friend Sweet Canadian on Steepster recently started a thread about how cool it would be to have a Candy Corn flavored tea. Well, Sweet Canadian, I agree, and I think it’s important that we make it available NOW so our friends up north can get this tea in time for Halloween. So, this week’s tea combines our amazing premium black teas with real candy corns and organic flavors. I had to work at it a bit, but found just the right mix of marshmallow, caramel and honey flavors, and it tastes JUST LIKE candy corn.

I made a bit extra of this blend because I know there is already some interest for it on Steepster and I thought some of you might want to give some out to select trick-or-treaters or steep it up for your Halloween parties, but don’t drag your feet. This one is going to go fast. Get yours today at www.zoomdweebies.com

I’ve had this for a couple of months, but I was using it for the Secret Pumpkin swaps and didn’t try it myself.

I was a little put off by the smell of this dry, so I didn’t have high hopes. Steeped, it does remind me of candy corn. The bit of sweetness around the entire mouth is weird but so accurate. I’m not sure it’s something that I’ll want very often (similar to candy corn strangely enough), but I’m happy to say that it isn’t bad.

3 tsp + sweetener in 16oz steeping mug. I think maybe I overleafed actually. Will try again.

Maybe I’m wrong but it seems like there’s a greater proportion of black teas in the X-mas sampler this year than there was last year. Not that I’m complaining as I’m quite fond of most of Frank’s black tea blends. :D

I was a bit skeptical of this tea at first as I didn’t think candy corn was a flavour that could be replicated well or accurately. Good thing I was wrong. The tea really does taste like the candy – vanilla and sugary sweetness with a hint of caramel – no additional sweetener needed! The candy corn bits dissolved nicely – it’s a bit of a pet peeve when supposedly dissolvable candies and other additives don’t break down and end up thrown away in the bottom of your strainer.

I’ve already got quite a few candy-flavoured teas so I’m not sure I’d buy a whole pouch of this blend, but I wouldn’t say no to this tea if it was offered to me. ;)

This. Is. Amazing. I was thinking that this could go either way – it could be really good or really terrifying. Luckily, it’s totally the former. When I smelt the tea, I was sceptical. It gave me the same feeling as DTs Salted Caramel – a tea I don’t personally care for. Regardless of my intital feelings, I decided to brew a cup, and it was phenomenal. I couldn’t believe it tasted JUST like candy corn. Delicious and sweet, almost like honey.

Absolutley delicious! The aroma is to die for. I just recently found Zoomdweebie’s, 52 Teas? and I just love the small batch gourmet approach this company takes. From the quality of the large tea flakes (not the crushed powder the large brands offer) to the large pieces of in this case real Candy Corn really sets them apart. Hot or Cold this tea is so downright delicious I am drooling just thinking about it. Just ordered two more pouches and hope they keep this blend in stock year round!

Arby Advent Day 11
Candy corn is not a candy that I eat, but the sample didn’t have any candy corn pieces, so I figured I’d give it a try! The flavor is relatively plain with a sugary flavor in the base tea. It’s a light, sweet tea with almost some fruitiness to it. Not a favorite, but decent!

This is one of the tea samples I pulled from the Discovery Teabox, so thank you to Skysamurai for organizing and all participants for sharing! Since I’ve missed the last two weeks of my Teabox Tuesday sipdowns, I have some catching up to do. This is a Frank blend from 2013 so I am going into this expecting quite a bit of flavor degradation due to age. I do have to say I really love the concept of a candy corn flavored tea, though, and am curious if I can squeeze enough flavor out of this still to see where they were going with this one. I gave it a longer initial steep than I usually give black teas in the hope of coaxing a bit more flavor out and allowing the two pieces of candy corn in my sample to fully melt. Hopefully the longer steep won’t backfire on me in more bitter/astringent tea in the base…

The dry leaf had actually reminded me a bit of orange creamsicle, but brewed the tea just smells very sweet, with a sort of dry/alcoholic quality to the aroma that is hard to describe. It actually tastes pretty good for the age, though I suspect quite a bit of the flavor may be coming from the melted candy (and that may be what is causing that somewhat strange aroma, since candy corn are quite waxy). I am getting some cream and honey notes, but there is a slight metallic/alcoholic quality to the aftertaste. The black tea base is quite light and not bitter or astringent; the drink is very sweet. I find that I have that sort of “metallic” aftertaste with other teas too and it usually is due to certain types of flavoring, so maybe it’s just the case with a certain brand used in this one.

I’d definitely like to see a fresh take on a candy corn tea. This is a very sweet cup, and I’m surprised how much is still there considering the age, but I like the bases and flavorings 52Teas uses now a lot more, so it’d be interesting to see this blend updated.

Finally another sipdown. I have a record number of teas and I know the TTB is returning to me shortly.

The main flavours here are honey and malt. The honey is actually weirdly strong for me but it isn’t sweet at all. I had it with some unsweetened soy milk and now I’m remembering this would be better with a touch of sweetener.

From the Not my cup of tea TTB!
I friggin LOVE Halloween! And candy corn. So much so that it scares my roommates during the month of October. I buy a bag of candy corn and hide it just for myself. Too bad the cops would probably be called if I went trick or treating…
This tea does taste like candy corn, regardless of whether or not I drop a candy corn in. Candy corn basically tates like creamed honey to me, and this is just like a plain black tea sweetened with honey. The base was pretty boring, just your basic slightly malty, bold black tea. Nothing too thrilling, but I am glad to have had the experience.

This is a festive-looking blend with candy corn mixed in. It’s probably more appropriate to drink it around Halloween, but there are no rules about when to try a tea! The aroma of both the dry blend and brewed tea has that caramel-like sweetness that does remind me of candy corn. The tea base is quite good, and comes through as clean and a little malty. Actually, thinking back on it, I tasted the tea base first, and then the other flavors as it cooled more. These include a strong mellow sweetness that is distinctly honey-like, as well as marshmallow root, which I think I’ve finally tasted enough times to be able to identify. I’m not a big fan of honey-flavored teas in general, but that’s just me. I can see that it’s quite the authentic candy corn experience! Thanks to beelicious for the sample :)

Steepster keeps eating my notes D: I’ve just spent ages writing about this tea and it froze then published my note blank ): is this happening to anyone else??

Anyway, this was the third of my Halloween Tea Marathon teas, and yet another sample from KittyLovesTea. I have actually finished my marathon now, but I’m quite behind on publishing my notes due to uni work and Steepster issues.

I’ve spent far too long on trying to write up this tasting note, so I’m basically going to attempt to write it quickly before it closes itself again. Controversially, I am not a huge fan of this tea. I have never had candy corn, so I don’t know how faithful an interpretation it it, but to me, this just tastes like a generic base tea with a slightly honeyed aftertaste. I think next time I will eat a candy corn from the dry leaf first. So I have a better comparison to go off. For all I know, it could be a perfect representation. As it is, I am drinking this blind and don’t think it’s really anything special. Sorry, Frank!

Marzipan

You have never had candy corn! What?

Nattie

I’ll try that next time, thanks!

Lol Marzipan, I can’t say I’ve ever seen it! I don’t think it’s really a ‘thing’ in the UK
