From 52teas

A quick note before we get to this week’s Tea of the Week: You might want to keep an eye on our In-Stock page over the next week. We are reviving each of the 12 Teas of Christmas, one each day between now and Christmas Eve. If you were lucky enough to get one of our 12 Teas of Christmas samplers this year and the samples are making you want more, you can pick up some pouches while they last. If you didn’t get a sampler, you might still see something you missed or want more of.

As for this week’s tea, imagine homemade Strawberry Rhubarb Pie, encased in a delicious buttery pastry, full of sweet strawberries and tangy rhubarb. Now imagine that in a comforting mug or icy tumbler full of caffeine- and calorie-free honeybush. Can you imagine it? Well, you don’t have to imagine it, you can order it now. =)

Our Tea of the Week for the week of December 17, 2012

sipdown! (227)

I’m so glad that i have my Ruby Pie from butiki teas after having tried this one. While this is a decent strawberry honeybush, it’s for sure not strawberry rhubarb pie. Glad i got to try it but happier still to send the rest off to better homes.

Well… this doesn’t taste like strawberry rhubarb pie to me…. however I do like it! It tastes fruity and sweet, with an almost caramelly, lingering sweet flavour that I’m quite enjoying. I wasn’t sure whether or not to expect spice in here like Strawberry Pie Honeybush, but it’s not here, and that’s ok. I don’t really taste any rhubarb tartness (there may have been cause to use hibiscus here for that!!) however I like this the way it is. Tasty enough that I am happily going back and sipping this one all up (as I did with Weeping Angel and Caramel Apple). No ill tummy effects from this one!

ETA: SOOOOOO. The above review is most likely for PB Cup Honeybush, which, shockingly, shouldn’t taste like SRP at all, haha. So this well get another proper shot later. I’m leaving the rating, because I did just drink what I think was SRPH, and it was delicious, and tasted fruity and much more like strawberries. Heh. Read my PB Cup Honeybush note for an explanation :)

ETA again: Re-steep was mostly flavourless (and I’m positive that I have the right tea this time).

I’m not a huge honeybush fan but I LOVE this one, it really does have a buttery pie taste to it

I feel a little nervous. Tomorrow is my first day in my new work position, so I decided to stop drinking caffeine a little earlier to help me get a good night sleep.

I’ve been hoarding some bits of my various honeybush blends for the past few months because it’s just too difficult to say goodbye…so I won’t. Instead I’ll just say “until we meet again”. I feel certain that this will be made again (right 52teas?); it’s just far too good to be permanently archived. I enjoyed this one hot, cold and even when I was really ill I still enjoyed this one mixed with club soda. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie Honeybush, you’ve been with me through the good, the bad and the ugly…until we meet again…

I didn’t pick up any rhubarb from this when I first tried this, yesterday. It gave an overall impression of those Strawberry Shortcake toys (you know how they smelled like fake watery strawberries?). To be fair, I’d just finished drinking a big mug of Butiki’s Ruby Pie (sample from Sil); the rhubarb tartness of that tea made most things I drank afterwards taste sweet and bland in comparison.

Tonight’s cup of this tisane was a lot better. While the rhubarb is still not screaming its presence, it peaks through subtly in the finish and aftertaste. It’s so gentle you might miss it. It’s a citrus tartness that goes from strawberry to rhubarb (albeit an extremely sweetened rhubarb). Mostly, the cup boasts sugary strawberries, and another texture-flavour I like to think of as “doughy”.

Thank you, Sil, for the samples! As far as honeybush blends go, I enjoyed this one, even if there was more strawberries than rhubarb.

You’re welcome. I too found this one more of a strawberry blend…decent but still mostly just a strawberry blend

Crowkettle

Yeah, I was a little disappointed by that. I mixed some of it up with the the Ruby Pie, though, and that was fantastic. I’m glad OMGsrsly has more of that for me, from the giant Butiki order. :)

Sil

if you get to it before me, i’d love to hear your thoughts on what i sent you vs your ordered one haha. i still haven’t done a comparison.

Crowkettle

Oh, I’ll definitely do that! I still have cup’s worth of the custom blend so I can drink them both side by side.

Thanks Sil! The aroma of this is pretty awesome. It’s sweet and fruity. The flavor is a lot more mellow than I thought it was going to be. I’m getting lovely strawberry notes. Not so much rhubarb. I am getting some baked crust notes. I’m happy this is more sweet and not tart. This is a lovely honeybush.

Backlog:

A tasty honeybush blend … then again, Frank has a way with honeybush. I like the combination of the nutty, honey-sweet notes of the honeybush together with the strawberry and rhubarb. I love the way rhubarb accentuates the strawberry so that it just tastes more like strawberry to me. The flavors are sweet with notes of tart.

I can’t say that this tastes like strawberry rhubarb pie … because, well, I’ve never had strawberry rhubarb pie. But, I certainly do find this blend to be enjoyable. Sweet, juicy, and tasty. My youngest daughter also loves this one!

Sil

Never had strawberry rhubarb pie! Man oh man….

Crowkettle

Strawberry rhubarb pie is one of my favourite kinds of pies. I’ll have to keep my eyes out for this one.

Sil

uh crowkettle…. cough i have this one in my cupboard AND the even better caffeinated version that stacy created ;)

Crowkettle

I want both of those things… :/

Sil

crow – send me a pm with your details, i’ll send some out your way.

thanks again, Starfevre for the trade! I’m not sure why the 52s steep so quickly… I know the typical rooibos/honeybush is supposed to be steeped for at least a few minutes, but I steeped this one for 45 seconds and got a pretty decent flavor. I’m going to try all the 52 teas for 30 seconds from now on and see if I have to steep them longer. I’m not sure if this tastes like strawberry, certainly not much rhubarb, but it does have a nice, sweet flavor.

Hot, this is a lot like the Strawberry Pie honeybush, but toned down a lot. And instead of it being dominantly strawberry, there’s just a little rhubarb tartness to it.

I let it cool off and I love it sooooo much more! Seriously just like Strawberry Pie with super juicy strawberry flavor, but now I can DEFINITELY taste the rhubarb! I was just thinking about teas that I like better around room temperature and I think I found one. I’ll have to give it a try cold too.

I REALLY wanted to like this more then I did.
I think after the awesomeness that was Walter Bishop yesterday, I had my sights set too high. This blend was “good” but not great. The strawberry is much more muted. I detect another note of what I assume is the rhubarb….I don’t particularly like that in the tea. Though to be honest, I’m not a rhubarb fan in general. I’m having no problem drinking it, I just feel somewhat cheated after having a REAL strawberry honeybush yesterday.

That’s funny, I like this one a lot more than Walter Bishop XD

I got this in a swap from Sil. Thanks so much.

The smell of the dry tea is sweet strawberry but there is also a peppery type smell, like black pepper.

The brewed tea is very dark red-purple. It still has that very strong peppery smell still. The tea tastes like sweet strawberry and there is still that peppery taste. The peppery taste could be more of a very bitter or tart rhubarb. I feel like I get a slight taste of rhubarb in the tea. Wait…the peppery taste could be a bit more of the taste of pie crust. Hmmmm. I am starting to understand this tea. I did add a few peices of rock sugar.

This tea tastes better and better as it cools. Next time I would like to add some milk or cream, strawberry rhubarb pie a la mode. Mmmmmmm.
