Our Tea of the Week for the Week of July 30, 2012

My wife and I have a favorite Chinese restaurant here in Wichita (if you live here or plan to visit, you HAVE to check out Oh Yeah; It really is awesome. Tell Shu that Frank sent you).

Anyway, the food there is amazing, but I think my wife’s favorite part is the Mango ice cream. It does strike me as the perfect, sweet, creamy ending to a fabulous meal. Anyway, it inspired me to make this week’s Tea of the Week. I hope you enjoy it.

(Reblend)

From our 2021 12 Teas of Christmas box!

Rich black teas (a blend of Assam, Ceylon & Yunnan) combined with lots of freeze-dried mango bits & vanilla bean. There’s also a touch of “ice cream” essence to it so that it tastes a bit like ice cream. To me, what it tastes like is that someone melted some mango ice cream & added it to my black tea. I get notes of mango & vanilla – but my black tea flavors come shining through as well – it’s a nice balance between black tea, mango & vanilla

It’s organic, vegan, gluten-free, allergen-free & all natural!

more about this tea: This is my first time reblending this tea since my first few months as the mad tea artist of 52Teas – this was one of the reblends requested as a campaign reward when we took over 52Teas as part of our Kickstarter Startup & it’s every bit as good as I remember it.

This tea is amazing iced – but it’s also really good hot. On the label of this tea, I suggest a 3 minute steep time, but after a couple more test steeps (part of the job, you understand? Just doing my job!) I find that if you shave 15 seconds off the steep time – for a 2 minute & 45 second steep, followed by a 10 minute ‘rest’ before you start sipping – the flavor is even smoother & tastier. So, I do recommend setting a timer & not leave it – this is one of our more finicky teas & likes the high maintenance treatment. Giving it what it wants will result in a more delicious cuppa.

organic ingredients: black teas, mango, vanilla bean & natural flavors

to brew: shake the pouch. Use between 3 grams of tea to 12oz of nearly boiling water (205°F) & steep for just over 2 ½ minutes – but not quite three minutes. the label on this tea suggests 3 minutes, but after testing this a few more times, I find that I prefer the tea if I steep it for closer to 2 minutes and 45 seconds. the flavor comes out smoother with just 15 seconds cut off the steep time.

serving suggestions: If you’re drinking this hot, I would recommend going latte with this by adding a splash of milk or cream – it will give you an even creamier taste & texture. Still fantastic without the dairy, but even better with it. When cool, the softer “ice cream-y” flavors pop a little more – so you don’t need to go latte with the chilled tea.

A teensy bit of sugar will bring out more of the vanilla tones to the cup as well as the sweeter notes of mango – without the sweetener, I get a more tangy mango flavor.

Again, it’s important to note that this tea definitely benefits from the cool time – it is not the same cuppa straight from the teapot hot as it is after it’s been poured and had a chance to cool for about 10 minutes. The flavor not only intensifies as it cools.

Whichever way you decide to drink it, it’s really very good. An invigorating yet tasty cuppa without addition, a sweeter, dessert-y cup with additions.

I taste a lot of fruitiness, but I don’t really get any ice cream element. It’s a softer sort of black tea, not adding too much. The mango flavor is pretty strong, but I end up feeling pretty neutral to it combined with the black tea. I guess I wish there were more going on here rather than just a mild fruity black tea.

2022 Spring Tea Swap – Day 19
From Emilie!

I’m behind on my tasting notes, but I wanted to drop in and leave a note about this tea since I’m currently having a cup with breakfast. I’m really surprised at how so like a mango the dry blend smells. I can’t say that I’ve ever had mango ice cream, but I do really like mango sticky rice and that’s the first thing that came to mind. I did add cream but still no ice cream flavors are jumping out at me. Not too concerned about it though, as this is a delicious cup of strong black tea that making my morning much more pleasant by the minute.

52Teas 12 Teas of Christmas: Day 8!

Had to drink this one on the go, during our seven-hour drive up to my parents’ house for the holidays. I wish the mango flavor had been a little more evocative of the juicy brightness I love in fresh mangoes, but it was still tasty. I got plenty of delightful ice cream notes at least!

Sipdown 182- 2021

I really overleafed this cup, but dang was it tasty. Bright, sweet mango combined with creamy vanilla and a touch of malt/cocoa from the black base.

Twelve Days of Tea 2021 – Day Eight

This started off on the brisk side but “chilled out” as it cooled a bit. Now it has delicious sweet vanilla cream flavour, similar to Walter Bishop’s Milkshake flavouring. I like this.

The mango is a greener type – one that I associate with the strong smell of the skin, and the bitter tang of the peel on sweet flesh. It’s clearly and vividly mango to my palate but almost a savoury kind. Mango is tricky and its flavouring transforms as my cup’s temperature changes. Looking forward to revisiting the rest of my pouch in the near future!

The 8th Tea of Christmas! I was really happy that this tea won a spot in this year’s box, a little surprised too – because it’s been a few years since I last reblended it (I think the one and only time I reblended it was for the start-up Kickstarter rewards.)

So, I just reread the tasting note that I wrote 9 years ago for this tea (back when Frank first blended it) and it mentioned that I was drinking the tea at almost 7 pm – because I had gone back to bed after getting my “little one” off to school so my day started a little late. That little one that I got off to school is now in college. Wow.

Anyway, this tea: sweet, creamy & tasty mango. I wish I could somehow nail my favorite mango ice cream (that would be Baskin Robbins Triple Mango Ice Cream. If you happen to find the tea in your local Baskin Robbins, try it!) I just haven’t been able to find a way to nail that flavor – without overwhelming the black tea base. Maybe if I try it on a different base – anyway – until I do find a way to replicate the flavor of my beloved Triple Mango Ice Cream – I find this tea to be very satisfying!

Sipped on this one last week! I love the slightly flowery leaning and sweet tropical taste of this mango that comprises the top notes and much of the mid sip as well. This taste is met with a fleeting astringency from the black tea, which also shares a bit of a floral quality to it. As the mango starts to diminish in the mid sip, it’s met with a silky vanilla cream/custard note that completes this teas namesake and delivers that end “mango ice cream” or even maybe “mango lassi” flavour… Mmm!

The overall flavour is quite nice, don’t get me wrong. There’s a bit of creaminess to it, which is always welcome without the addition of actual cream. But I steeped it hot and there wasn’t even a hint of mango. Maybe if I’d steeped it cold? I dunno.

This tea had a soft cream note with more pronounced mango fruity notes. I didn’t really get any “ice cream” flavour. I feel the base to this one was too strong for this though as it quickly became astringent & bitter. It could have been my own error though so take that with a grain of salt. I’d try it again.
