From 52teas

My grandfather loved to mix cocktails. It was a generational thing, I imagine, but when I was a kid he had (in my grandparents house) a full private bar stocked with everything he needed to mix highballs, martinis and all kinds of wondrous (to my young mind) beverages that I knew nothing about. I used to spend hours examining his collection of souvenir swizzle sticks. (I don’t guess they do it any more, but he had tons of plastic, wooden and glass swizzle sticks imprinted with the names of hotels and bars from all over the world. They were all a bit different, not just in shape size and color, but some of them were really interesting with landmarks or figures incorporated into the design.)

Anyway, I guess I was just a bit too enamored of his adult world of cocktails maybe, and grandpa, not wanting to leave me out, starting making a drink for me: Ginger ale with a fat maraschino cherry in it, and just a touch of the liquid from the jar that held the maraschino cherries. I’ve been a ginger ale addict ever since.

Ginger ale actually has a bit of lemon or lime (or both) in it as well as the ginger which gives it that extra warmth and spice. I considered a few different lemon/lime options before deciding that our ginger ale should have ginger and bergamot. The base tea had to be light enough to really let the bergamot and ginger shine, so I opted for our light and delicious Bai Mu Dan white tea.

So, without further delay or reminiscences, here is our premium Bai Mu Dan white tea, blended with real ginger and natural bergamot and ginger flavors. Enjoy!

The always wonderful Dylan shared this with me yesterday. Wow. Yum.

I love ginger and bergamot. This really has the right amount of both. It’s very light yet distinctive. There’s also some aromatic note that reminds me of something from my childhood, but I can’t put my finger on it.

This is a worthwhile bai mu dan.

Thanks, Dylan!

Thanks to Meghann for letting me try this one! I am lovin’ it; agreed that it’s not so much like ginger ale soda but like ginger flavor. There are other notes there as well which I can’t accurately taste as I enjoyed this tea with my mid-morning snack of strawberry applesauce.

I let it steep for a good six minutes for a heartier flavor – and the ginger flavor was stronger.

OK I’m thinking there is a basil flavor there. Not 100% sure (due to strawberriness) but it tastes crisp like basil does. To me.

Not a fave from 52Teas, but still a decent selection. The ginger does pep me up!

I am going to hold off giving a numerical rating to this until I decide what I think of it! It’s really unusual, as is so often the case with 52Teas’ blends. My first thought upon sipping this was that it tasted just like the scent that’s in the Lush cosmetics’ Christmas Party bath bomb and Champagne Snow Showers products. But that might, um, sound repulsive. It’s just unusual. I can’t seem to think of anything else now that I’ve made the association. But I actually can see how this is gingerale-y as well. It’s very interesting, and I’m looking forward to another cup, so I can try to sort out my opinion on it.

This is one I got in a trade and while I am just starting to enjoy ginger anything, this is definitely drinkable. Flavor is there but not overwhelming. I still enjoy the heck out of, I might even buy some if he remixes some.

Want to preface with thanks to Frank of 52teas for complying with request of this as freebie in the White Tea sale. Now on to review…
How is it I get the impression of fizz in this tea? The flavour reminds me of Schweppes Ginger Ale. Ginger makes dry tea smell odd but I find it brews up beautifully. (I mean that ginger as a flavour additive does not smell like fresh ginger but tastes like proper ginger). I should try it iced, but darn I only have an itty bitty pouch. However, white tea is not one to keep around over a year so I foretell this one will disappear quickly. I want to add, this tea is great if you want ginger ale, not if you want light flavouring of BMD because this one masks most of the tea. I will see if resteeping might change that. Note that I am a fan of bergamot so I didn’t think of mentioning it; probably because I prefaced this tasting with Harney’s Paris. (having Friday off means cupping of my tea cupboard and playing with my Yixing ware).

To me, this tastes like a generic white tea and ginger blend. I wanted to taste the gingerale but all I could taste was a faint, very far off ginger in a basic white tea base. I think I may have overstepped.
