Champagne Mojito Green

I am currently working on my full-length review for this one. Last night I brewed some for iced tea today, and right now I’m drinking a cup of it hot. The flavors really come together nicely. The champagne flavor is light, the green tea tastes fresh and a little buttery, and the spearmint is crisp and refreshing. I really must thank Rachel for bringing this one back, because if she hadn’t, I probably would have never had the opportunity to try it, and I’m really glad I did.

I was so pleased to see this tea arrive. I wasn’t sure whether it would get through Customs, and they did open the package to check it – but they let it through. Double yay, because as it turns out, I’m really glad I got to try this tea.

The description sounded intriguing, so I was really, really hoping the taste wouldn’t be a let-down, as happens to me too often with flavoured teas. First impression was good, though: the dry leaves don’t just smell like mint, they smell like a peppermint cream! And then there was the flavour… I love the blend of the mint and the lime, with that added extra something that must be the hint of champagne. There’s nothing weak or lacking about the flavours, but they’re not too much, either, and all in all I have to say that it’s a really well balanced blend. All of the flavours are present in the aroma, too, so you breathe it in at the same time as you’re drinking it.

…Huh. This tea sounds so good, but there’s some weird scent/aftertaste thing going on that’s just not pleasant, like industrial floor cleaner or artificial sweetener. I tried this cooler and then almost-boiling, and the hotter cup was better, but still…odd. I will give it one more chance, and then it may be yuckyface time, I’m afraid.

Do you know how muggy it is in Houston right now? Well, actually, it’s not too bad- only 77% humidity and 82 degrees- downright mild, by Houston-in-June standards. Not to be deterred, I made a big ol’ pitcher of iced Champagne Mojito and stuck it in the fridge. It seemed to call for a straw- wanna see the cool glass straws I have? But I digress… this tea kinda grew on me as an iced tea. It mostly tastes of spearmint, but there may be something like dry champagne behind it if I’m not mistaken. I wish there was at least a slight lime kick to this.

A subtle smell of spearmint hit me when I opened the package, and something else that I couldn’t define.

While steeping, I could smell the spearmint and a hint of citrus…that would be the key lime. That’s the taste I got, too. Not too grassy, which is good because I don’t like too grassy. I think the something I can’t define is the essence of champagne? It’s funny, the aftertaste has some of that dryness that I get when I drink champagne. Part of why I love champagne! It could be that my palate isn’t refined enough when it comes to green teas, since I usually go for blacks and rooibos. I’ll need to work on this.

I was looking for something light, not too flavourful but not too bland, something soothing while the rain pounds the windows. This was the perfect tea for the specific moment.

Made a pitcher of this iced tonight and added an extra slice of lime to it. SO yummy! Thanks to Rachel of iHeartTeas for bringing this one back. :)

But this is no reflection of 52teas quality, as how did they get a tea to mimic champage? Upon removing the filter after steeping, I think I actually saw champagne bubbles. This tea does magically capture the “dryness” of champane.. but for me, I am not a champagne fan. Shoot, the only champagne my sweet tooth likes is some bargain brand (Verdi?) sold at the corner CVS…

I did not detect any lime notes even after cooling…

Needed something refreshing today. This certainly does the trick. I think having my next steeping over ice will make it even more so. Especially paired with my deliciously fruity poppyseed salad tonight. I’m loving this sunny weather! This tea can cure my blues on a cool and cloudy day, but I’d rather be sipping it on a warm and sunny day!

52teas is consistently brilliant and original in their blends. I loved this tea and I don’t typically like green teas. The interplay of the spearmint and the “bubbly” creamy extra is superb. If you are a fan of spearmint, you will most certainly like this. The tea itself has nice, large green leaves which unfurled beautifully. It is a refreshing way to end the day and I have used it as my last little bit of caffeine before I move to the evening’s de-caf regime. It does not absolutely feel as if this is cocktail hour, but it makes a good college try. A sweet, creamy, nifty cup of tea is always something to celebrate.

Minty? Got it. Dry lime? Hiding, but I think it’s there. Champagne? I’m a teetotaler so I’ll just have to take 52teas’ word for that one. Thinking this would be really nice chilled, if not iced.
