Hot cuppa.

This one certainly wasn’t bad, but I did find it rather weak/mildly flavoured in general and lacking a lot of body. It had some really interesting flavour notes though! It was vegetal, mineral, sweet, slightly smokey, and sort of bean-y? Like, green beans but also not green beams. Definitely some kind of beans, though.

It reminds me of other purple leaf teas I’ve tried, while still also having differences.

Just a gut feeling – but I bet this’ll be better Gong Fu.

Sipdown (231)!

Thank you for this one VariaTEA!

We were practicing making complicated drink orders for customers with the new tea guides at work a few days ago, and I happened to have this tea with me so I used it as sort of an example for those weird, complicated drinks. In hindsight, personally, I think I should have just tried this one straight because then I’d have a better feel for the typical flavours of this tea rather than my weird specialty order of it – though it did taste quite good.

Here was my order….
- 1/2 pump agave
- Two small splashes of skim milk
- Four ice cubes added after the water has been poured

And yes, people really order like that.

- Perfect level of sweetness; tasted like rice krispies cereal with sugar sprinkled on top
- With hints of vanilla/marshmallow
- I COULD see the “Marshmallow Krispy Treat” comparison
- But it did remind me a bit more of a bowl of actual rice krispies cereal
- Very smooth, well balanced flavour

I’d definitely be curious to try this one again in the future if the opportunity arose.

I will have to check but I probably can set aside another sample for you

Hot Latte!

We weren’t really sure how this weekend would go in stores – it’s May long, and that could go one of two different ways; busy or slow. On top of that, the highland games are also taking place this weekend. Turns out that means a very sporatic weekend with weird off and on rushes, and lots of drink sales.

This tea is my moment of peace and indulgence amongst the rushes – a little oversteeped as well because when you over steep this one just perfectly you get more jasmine and elegant floral notes and just enough of a burnt taste to add to the “crème brulee” aspect of the tea without it tasting bitter. It’s a delicate balance though.

Friendly reminder that I do not numerically rate DAVIDsTEA blends as I’m currently employed there and it would be an obvious conflict of interest. Any blends you see with numerical ratings were rated prior to my employment there. These reviews are a reflection of my personal thoughts regarding the teas, and not the company’s.

Tea Popsicles!

…gross ones though.

For the added fruit, I mixed in chunks of apple and orange segments that I thought would add to the fruity frlavour of the tea, and honestly the only thing that ended up tasting good about the whole creation was the added orange segments. The apple just turned to nasty mush, and despite the tea being a really fruity one and having been cold brewed instead of steeped hot it just tasted very bitter. No one wants a bitter popsicle; that’s just a sad time…

VariaTEA

I have the popsicle maker. I should try this sometime. Well…obviously not THIS, but tea popsicles.

Cold Brew!

A bit of an anomaly, though – for the first time I think ever I wound up with a batch of this without any hibiscus in it. It brewed up a cloudy white/soft yellow colour without even a trace of a pink tinge to it and flavour wise it was really good. Very strong coconut flavour, very strong pineapple and no stupid hibiscus getting in the way and muddling that pina colada goodness.

Cold Brew Sipdown (232)!

So, this cold brew isn’t bad per say, but I definitely do kind of regret finishing my sample as a cold brew because it’s nowhere near as good as the hot version. I don’t know, it’s a little hard to explain because the flavour profile is essentially the same, only A LOT stronger – and in this case, stronger kind of equals a lot less good.

A touch too lemony, and a bit of a sickly sweet finish. Not quite cloying but totally verging on it…

I feel like this gif kind of perfectly sums up the hot mug I’m drinking right now, so I think I’m just gonna leave you with that…

Cold Brew!

Man, this tea has been a part of my life for four years now! How absolutely insane is that to think that it’s been that long since I tried my first Butiki tea. I mean, I just finished skimming through four years worth of tasting notes for this tea, and it was a bit of a roller coaster! It also reminded me both of some of the ‘phases’ I’ve gone through here on Steepster as well as some of the various life events that’ve occurred, and people I’ve crossed paths with.

Do y’all remember back when I felt the need to specify the EXACT amount of leaf I used with each cup as well as the exact amount of oz. in the cup? That was when I was working of perfecting precise brewing techniques, and I think pretty close with when I got into Gong Fu brewing for the first time? Or how about the summer I was really into making tea infused simple syrups for tea soda! I still kind of love the tea soda thing, but I’ve totally evolved past the sweetened/simple syrup style of making it.

And non tea related, but what about “Word of The Day”!? That was actually kind of fun, but I don’t even remember now when that even came about/why it became a thing. Most funny to me though was seeing myself reference in old tasting notes “hot DAVIDsTEA guy” at a point in my life when I didn’t know his name and hadn’t yet dated his best friend/got piss drunk at his house. Ah, life…

So, this is just me saying thank you, Watermelon Xylophone, for being such a constant in my life the last four years. It’s going to be really, truly upsetting when you’re finally gone.

Flavors: Cream, Flowers, Melon

My Steepster notes are a similar chronicle of my life and journey with tea. How fun to go back and re-read (re-live) those times.

Tag a long tea for a jaunt to the pet store; the stupid rat/guinea pig go through bedding like crazy. They’re not really stupid though; I love ‘em. They just make my room smell like hay and farts, and that’s annoying sometimes.

Here’s a cute, recent, picture of Eilert though!

Anyway…

Last time I drank this I kind of complained that I couldn’t taste the chili in it at all, but the flavour definitely came through in this mug! I don’t know if it’s because I let this steep longer since we were driving to the pet store or if I just a better representation of flavour in the leaf I had scooped out of the tin. Also, a bit more lemon myrtle in this cup as well. Lemony peppermint with spicy chili finish…

Doesn’t sound great, but actually was pretty solid.

Enjoying a smooth mug of this while I read some Spider Gwen! Of course, because I knew I was going to be reading dome Spider Gwen I had to drink this one out of my spider man mug…

It’s been a pretty chill day off, and I haven’t really done much all day. I guess I caught up on tasting notes, and I went out for supper and to the pet store – but nothing really exerting. Sometimes I think that’s important for a day off, though.

The creamy, silky vanilla notes and lavender of the tea are actually pairing really well with the food I’m eating too – a lemon flavoured yogurt/chia cup. The creamy yogurt and the vanilla in the tea are a solid pairing of similar flavours, and then the juxtaposition of the delicate, aromatic lavender notes and the slightly acidic, tangy lemon is really fun and playful while also enhancing each respective aspect. The floral brings out sweetness in the lemon, and then the lemon makes the lavender feel more exotic.

Divine!

Ms. Strange, is this tea seasonal or when does it become available? I notice that it is absent on their website.

Roswell Strange

Cuppa’T doesn’t really have a super consistent stock – the owner tends to just buy what’s selling well/what her customers request, as well as consistently bringing in new things to try and rotating between things which are more seasonally appropriate. I didn’t see it last time I was in the store, so she might have decided not to carry it/to test out something new in the mean time.

Profile

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
