Sipdown (137/144)!

Last sipdown in the queue, though hopefully I’ll get a few more in today once I’m done logging.

I made this a hot cup; it really wasn’t so bad except that it was especially tart and the orange stood out a little bit more than all the other flavours. The bubble gum flavour trait was still present too; how interesting. I definitely like the tea pop/cold brew versions better but I’d still drink this if it was served to me!

I don’t know; I may have to grab 50g more of this one…

Flavors: Orange

I really wish this was a perfume or body wash or something because it just smells so amazing and creamy and delicious! I always find myself stealing sniffs from the tin it’s in. Anyway, I was in a definite Genmaicha mood a few nights ago and this is actually the only Genmaicha I have in the house currently so I totally indulged in a very large mug of it!

There is definitely a thick creaminess to this one that a regular, plain Genmaicha doesn’t have; sometimes I’m not sure if I’d say marshmallow – but it’s definitely close. Yummy!

Tasting note number 1700! Woot!

Anyway, I added a tsp. of this matcha into a pudding cup of caramel pudding; honestly I didn’t expect to be able to taste the matcha but I just wanted that matcha buzz and I thought that out of the matcha I own this one would clash the least with caramel flavour. At I was pretty right; I couldn’t taste this one at all until the after taste and then surprisingly it tasted distinctly like maple.

That’s a wholotta notes, congrats!

Cold Brewed!

I picked up more of this one for cold brewing (and possibly for trying a latte) because I’ve really enjoyed the last few ones, except this one wasn’t so fantastic – I think I underleafer it or something since it wasn’t nearly as sweet or as flossy.

Not horrible or anything; just not as fantastic. I think when I finish my leaf of this one I’ll probably be done with it.

Big thanks to Courtney for giving this one to me!

For the first try, I whisked it into cold milk. Overall it was good but a little weak; next time I think I’ll up the amount of matcha I use (Courtney, what flavour level is this one?). But, that said, despite being a bit weaker than I was anticipating it was nice and did deliver a nice maple flavour. It reminded me of the maple leaf shaped sugar cookies with the slight walnut nuttiness to them and that yummy maple icing! Mmm!

I look forward to playing around with this one!

drank Gold Rush by DAVIDsTEA

Made in my timolino. Just an average, spectacular cup of hot liquid caramel/coconut/mulberry deliciousness!

In a few months when points are eligable to be redeemed again I’m definitely gonna be using some of mine on 50g more of this one; I burn through it so damn quickly! I would have used the points I had this month on more of this, but I wanted to get Caramel Corn guilt free while I still had the chance.

I’ve had this a couple times in store as a tea pop, and I’ve definitely liked it a lot that way, so I finally bit the bullet so to say, and I bought a nice sample amount to play with at home to decide if this is something I really need to get before I lose the chance to.

I started by cold brewing it because tea pop is iced, so cold seemed like a make sense route to take; and it was pretty good. It brewed up a spectacular deep red colour and was really pretty to look at if nothing else. One thing I noticed right away is that the dry leaf smells heavily like fruity bubble gum to me; candy like fruit sweetness! That definitely translated over into the cold brew. When I didn’t think about what I was drinking too hard it was fruit bubble gum. When I paused and thought about it I could break down the individual components.

It had a tart hibiscus strong start that branched out into a rich almost candy-like but not quite orange/strawberry sweetness with an underlying licorice flavour hanging out beneath the fruit the whole time. Very refreshing, definitely enjoyable, I don’t know about mind blowing though. Probably wont restock this; but may continue to take advantage of getting it as a tea pop when I go in store.

drank Nestea by Nestle

Ordering more pizza = more cans of Nestea.

This one I drank on my way to work, nothing special about it. So I’m just gonna share a sorta interesting and sorta work related story.

For those who don’t know, I work in a mall – and malls typically have mall security or “mall cops”. Our mall has (or should I say had?) four whom we’ve come to recognize and form impressions of. There are two woman; one very sweet woman who never says anything but always smiles at store employees and who overall just seems like a nice person who keeps to herself. Then there’s the other woman who’s a middle aged First Nations woman who is just generally really rude and bitchy. She constantly locks the doors early (the mall closes at nine, but doors are supposed to stay open until ten because there’s a grocery store connected to the mall – I happen to get off at ten every night, an hour after the store has “closed”). It’s very frustrating because we get off work and then either have to wait around in the mall for her to unlock the doors to let us out OR we have to unlock them ourselves (took us a while, but we figured out how), and she gets very pissed when we do that. If you don’t want us opening the doors, how about you don’t lock us in!? She’s also called and reported us for being in the store after hours; of course we were in the store after hours, we work there and were doing the cleaning required for closing!. It’s not like we were being sneaky about it; and who breaks into a Dollarama to mop the place?

Then there are the two male guards; there’s one with a beard who’s sorta a dick – you can tell he profiles First Nations teenagers/young adults because he follows them around. On several occasions he’s followed around Bobbi’s fiance Wes (they are both First Nations) – in the parking lot. The other male guard is pretty young looking, and doesn’t work as much as the others. He comes in the store sometimes to buy snack food, but mostly keeps to himself.

Well, the mall just hired a 5th guard! And this guy is great.

So far he’s only worked three shifts when Bobbi and I have been working, but everyone he’s come and stopped at the store to talk to us. He’s friendly and nice, and SO VERY JUMPY/CAFFEINATED. All three days he’s come and bought a surplus of energy drinks; like seven each day. No exaggeration. And he definitely looks caffeinated; the guy never stops moving. We found out why though; the dude is hella crazy and works four jobs. Mall security shifts are ten hour shifts, so three more jobs on top of that? Christ.

But he says he gets so many energy drinks because he literally, aside from working, goes home to sleep for four hours a night, and then goes right back to working. Damn.

But yeah, new mall security guard has become a source of great entertainment for us.

OMGsrsly

OMG. Someone THAT caffeinated would be entertainment for anyone, I think! One of the stores I used to work at didn’t open till 11 on Sundays, but management had to be in at 8:30 or 9:00 to do paperwork and mop the floors. Haha. We regularly had security side-eyeing us when we came in so early.

Sipdown (138/145)!

OK SO SOMETIMES I AM A BAD TEA DRINKER AND I AM SORRY.

So, thank you very much CelebriTEA for the sample from way back when in the 12 Days of Christmas tea swap. I honestly have NO CLUE why it took me so long to try this one, but it did and I feel terrible. If it makes you feel better though; I use the cute little hen pot holder pretty well every day. It’s on my table in my bedroom/the living room and it’s my go to coaster for hot cups of tea that I drink during the day or at night. It’s very, very well loved and used.

As for the tea itself; I don’t know how I feel about it. It was nice enough and I really don’t have anything negative to say about it – it just didn’t leave much of an impression overall and I think that, if it weren’t for the circumstances drinking it (having it for so long, and receiving it in the Christmas swap) it’d probably be relatively forgettable.

But anyway, I picked up on notes of lemon, licorice/anise, and caramel. Apparently there was lemon/caramel in this – but not licorice/anise. Hmm, weird. I didn’t really get much apple/cinnamon from the leaf – in fact, I didn’t get any apple and I guess maybe the cinnamon could have been misinterpreted as anise? Possibly. Black base was smooth; no bitterness or astringency. I feel like I should have loved this one; I just really only found it to be kinda decently good though.

drank Earl Grey by Nina's Paris

Thank you again VariaTEA for the sample of this! The cute little tin has been hanging out in my kitchen most of the week while I’ve been trying this one out; and I have to say that I actually really liked it, not that I didn’t expect to. It just feel’s like there’s a little “extra” to this EG over others.

This note specifically is for a batch I made in my timolino with milk. It was very smooth with a really nice black base, with strong notes of lavendar and jasmine in addition to a somewhat milder bergamot flavour and a sort of plum-y fruitiness to it. Honestly, it was just so good and it had some many unexpected flavours in it.

I enjoyed sipping on it at home while curled up on the couch munching out on pizza and stuff. I also met a new person; Tre’s friend Kaitlyn (I may have spelled it wrong; there are so many variations) came over to watch movies with him and stuff and it was the first time I’ve actually met her, though I’ve heard a lot about her. The two of them have a weird relationship; he was (maybe still is sorta?) super infatuated with her but she has a boyfriend – still they’re super flirty with each other. They had a bit of a falling out when he called her out on it and said he couldn’t just be friends with her if she was going to continue to treat him like she does Nigel (her boyfriend), but they’re working past it now and are back on track to being friends again.

It’s complicated, and a source of great entertainment for me – but I honestly feel bad for them both too. He’s right; she can be sorta aggressively flirty with him, but on the other hand he can also be one of those guys who does the whole “friend zoned” thing where he acts super charming/like an awesome friend, but has sorta “ulterior motives”. Bleck.

Bio

Hello! My name is Kelly, though many people in the tea community call me Ros or Roswell.

I am a mid-twenties tea addict, blogger, and all around nerd. I grew up in the Prairies, but a few years ago I relocated to Quebec to pursue a career with DAVIDsTEA in the tea industry! I’m still working on getting my French language skills down…

My first introduction to tea, in any form outside of instant and bottled iced tea, was about seven years ago when I happened to stumble upon DAVIDsTEA while looking for a birthday present for a friend! I tried their Birthday Cake rooibos blend, and I’ve been hooked on tea ever since! In those seven years; I was introduced to the online tea community, expanded my interest in flavoured teas to include a deep love and appreciation for straight teas and traditional brewing methods, got a tea themed tattoo, started reviewing teas, amassed a sizable tea and teaware collection, became a TAC certified Tea Sommelier, & even came full circle by beginning a career in the tea industry with DAVIDsTEA!

I consider myself a Jack of all Teas, and strive to have a knowledge and appreciation of all tea types, formats, and styles of drinking. I don’t like to feel boxed in to just being a “flavoured tea” or “straight tea” drinker – my expectations may vary depending on the type of tea or how it’s been processed/prepared but if it’s good tea, it’s good tea no matter how it’s been made!

You name it, I probably drink it- and I’ll absolutely try anything at least once.

My default method of preparation is hot, Western style, and straight – but I’m not opposed to additions if I’m in the right mood. If I ever add something to a tea or use a different method of preparation I will ALWAYS call it out in the tasting note though.

I like to listen to music when drinking tea, especially when I’m brewing a large pot at a time or steeping Gongfu. Often I curate very intentional tea and music pairings, and sometimes I share them here in my tasting reviews. Music is something that I find can deeply affect the experience of having tea.

I’m also one half of the “tea and fandom” podcast GeekSteep where, weekly, we discuss newly explored fandoms over tea as well as try to figure out the perfect tea to pair with each fandom. You can find us on Spotify and Apple & Google podcasts.

Favourite flavour notes/ingredients: Pear, lychee, cranberry, cream, melon, pineapple, malt, roasty, petrichor, sweet potato, heady florals like rose, hazelnut or walnut, sesame, honey (in moderation), and very woody shou.

Least favourite flavour notes/ingredients:
Lemongrass, ginger, strongly spiced profiles (and most Chai in general), mushrooms, seaweed, chamomile, stevia, saltiness or anything that reminds me too much of meat that isn’t supposed to taste like meat…

Currently exploring/obsessed with: Sheng from Yiwu, Yancha (Qilan in particular), anything with a strong sweet potato note. Also, I need to try ALL the root beer teas! Searching for a really good caramel flavoured blend, ideally with a black tea base.

Please contact me at the instagram account listed below if you would like me to review your teas.

Currently I’m employed in the tea department of the DAVIDsTEA head office. While I’m still sharing my own personal thoughts on new & existing DAVIDsTEA blends, I am no longer numerically rating them due to the obvious conflict of interest. Any comments expressed are a reflection of my own thoughts and opinions, and do not reflect the thoughts and opinions of the company. Any DAVIDsTEA blends you currently see with a numeric score were reviewed prior to my being hired there and have not been adjusted since becoming a DAVIDsTEA employee.
